PublicationA review of engineering leadership concept: a way forward( 2024-06)
;Alim MaktarLeadership is a critical component in business management, and in some situations, it can be vital to the survival of a company or organization. The concept of leadership has been extensively studied across various disciplines, yet the specific domain of engineering leadership remains underexplored and poorly defined. Every engineering organization, regardless of size, requires leaders and employees to execute projects to ensure their organization's success. This review article examines the existing definitions of leadership and engineering leadership, highlighting the lack of consensus in the field. By analyzing current literature, the authors identify the key attributes and skills associated with engineering leadership and discuss their relevance to contemporary engineering practices. Our findings reveal a fragmented understanding of engineering leadership, underscoring the need for further empirical studies to develop a cohesive and comprehensive definition. This article aims to provide a foundational understanding of engineering leadership and proposes directions for future research to bridge the gaps in the current knowledge, thereby paving the way for the development of robust theoretical and practical frameworks in engineering leadership. This paper focuses on leadership in the engineering context as the engineering sector plays a vital role in addressing sustainable development on a local, national, regional and global level. PublicationChallenges and opportunities of cybersecurity education for non-technical majors( 2024-06)
;Norlizawati GhazaliCybersecurity is fast becoming a crucial area of study due to the advancement of digital technology. As cybersecurity impacts all digital technology users, there is a pressing need for educating users on this issue. Moreover, the risk of falling victim to cyber threats is far more eminent in non-technical background users. Thus, this study focuses on the need for cybersecurity education towards non-technical majors in university, as an effort to address this problem. Through analysis of previous literatures, this paper highlights the possible challenges and opportunities in teaching cybersecurity for non-technical majors. This could provide valuable insights into the digital literacy gap for non-technical majors. PublicationComparative study of language learning strategies used by first-year students at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, Thailand and UniMAP, Malaysia( 2019-12)
;Liew Khe LiKanya PornwasanyingThe purposes of this study were (1) to explore language learning strategies used by firstyear Prince of Songkla University (PSU) and UniMAP students; and (2) to compare their use in terms of gender and nationality. The instrument used to collect data was the Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) Version 7.0, which consists of six categories of language learning strategies: memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social strategies. The 68 subjects were 10 first-year English majors and 58 first-year students enrolled in Foundation English courses required at each university. The data was analyzed for mean and standard deviation. Results showed that both Thai and Malaysian students used English learning strategies at a high level in all the categories. Metacognitive strategies were most frequently used among the students while memory strategies were employed the least. It was also found that genders and nationalities did not affect learning strategy use.20 24 -
PublicationDrama technique: an effective way to facilitate students’ language acquisition( 2020-12)Juliana AhmadEducators need to be creative in finding a new approach to motivate students to learn language. The process of teaching and learning needs to be compatible with students’ interest in order to encourage them to acquire language effectively. It is quite challenging for educators to find an appropriate method or teaching strategy that would alleviate students’ motivation to participate actively in teaching and learning process due to the nature of learner-centered approach that is widely adapted in education nowadays. This study mainly intends to explore the promising outcome of strengthening students’ speaking skills by integrating drama as part of the learning activities. Drama technique is undoubtedly one of the most convincing ways which is believed to build students’ confidence in the language thus improve their speaking ability. For this particular study, a group of international students from Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University (NPRU) are selected to give their feedback on the drama activity that was conducted in class during the Communicative English Course organized by UniMAP. The group of students were given an opportunity to share their thoughts and views throughout the implementation of drama activity held in class. Based on the students’ response, the answers have been analyzed thoroughly and it was found that students have positive and optimistic point of view about incorporating drama to increase their level of confidence in acquiring language which consequently contribute to improving their capability in language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing more confidently in English.

PublicationExamining the impact of influencers and bloggers on behavioral intentions among youth in Sindh Pakistan( 2024-06)
;Ikramuddin Junejo ;Abeer Memon ;Zuha Akhund ;Mahnoor ShahThis study examines the impact of attitude, social media influencers, electronic word of mouth (e-WOM), and credibility on behavioral intention among Pakistani youth towards the textile industry. An online survey was distributed with the help of an adapted questionnaire from past studies. A total of 200 cases were considered in this study, and reliability analysis and regression analysis were performed in SPSS version 25. The findings revealed that all independent variables of attitude, social media influencers, e-WOM and credibility are positively and significantly impacted behavioral intention. In detail, results presented that attitude is positively and significantly affect behavioral intention (β=.152, p=.048), social media influencer is positively and significantly affected behavioral intention (β=.176, p=.023), e-WOM is positively and significantly affect behavioral intention (β=.174, p=.022), and credibility is positively and significantly affected behavioral intention (β=.154, p=.021). Social media influencer was found to have a more significant impact on the behavioral intentions of the youth of Pakistan due to higher beta values than the other independent variables. Therefore, policymakers in the textile industry can consider these variables to attract Pakistani Youth towards their behavioral intention in the future. -
PublicationExploring students’ perspectives on using AI in english-speaking education with metaphorical expressionsThis qualitative study explores university students’ perceptions of using artificial intelligence (AI) in their English-speaking learning through metaphor analysis. As AI becomes more integrated into language education, understanding how students conceptualize its role offers valuable insights for designing effective AI-assisted learning environments. The research examines 244 metaphorical expressions provided by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students from various majors at a public university in mainland China. Students completed open-ended survey questions to express their metaphorical representations of AI in their language learning journey. The responses were systematically categorized and analyzed, revealing a variety of positive and negative attitudes. Positive metaphors included concepts such as “enhanced practice opportunities,” “language learning facilitator,” “future necessity,” and “personalized assistance,” highlighting AI’s potential to support individualized learning, provide meaningful practice, and aid in mastering spoken English. Conversely, negative metaphors like “complexity” and “over-reliance” pointed to concerns about navigating AI tools and the risk of excessive dependence on technology. These metaphorical insights shed light on students’ underlying beliefs about AI and its role in developing English-speaking skills. Understanding these perceptions is crucial for educators and curriculum designers to ensure AI tools are integrated in ways that enhance student engagement, improve speaking proficiency, and address potential challenges.

PublicationInstagram as a digital tool to enhance students’ writing skills( 2019-12)
;Latisha Asmaak ShafieStudents often face difficulties in writing due to grammar, vocabulary, syntax, lack of practice, over-reliance on their first language and writing anxiety. The traditional method of teaching writing has no longer seen as adequate to fulfill the demand of the current generation who are considered as digital native. This demand forces educators to explore and integrate technology into their teaching approaches. Instagram, with it many fun features; create, filter, share live videos are relatively easy to use tool and can be accessible anytime and anywhere. Although many studies highlighted that Instagram can be an effective pedagogical tool for developing learners’ vocabulary range and writing skills (Akhiar, Mydin & Adi Kasuma, 2017; Shafie, Yaacob & Singh, 2016), but Instagram is not commonly used in formal second language learning contexts. This paper promotes the use of Instagram as a digital writing tool to enhance students’ writing skills. The researchers provide suggestions of activities which allow students to observe selected Instagram accounts by focusing on the topics/themes, the styles of writing and the purposes of their writing. The activities teach students how to write each post by using the formula on Instagram. Apart from that, students also learn to use captions and hashtags to intrigue their audience4 15 -
PublicationKepentingan Literasi Maklumat dan Media (MIL), kesediaan digital dan keselamatan siber terhadap kesejahteraan digital belia( 2024-06)Perkembangan teknologi dan transformasi digital memberikan impak yang signifikan kepada kehidupan belia pada masa kini. Oleh itu, pelbagai inisiatif dilaksanakan bagi menjayakan perubahan tersebut menerusi pemerkasaan literasi maklumat dan media (MIL), kesediaan digital, dan keselamatan siber terhadap golongan belia. Tindakan ini bagi memastikan amalan digital mereka berdaya tahan dalam persekitaran digital yang semakin mencabar. Kecekapan-kecekapan ini penting untuk membantu para belia menjadi pengguna yang kritis dan beretika, sekaligus mencipta kesejahteraan digital yang holistik dalam pelbagai aspek seperti kerjaya, keusahawanan, sosial, ekonomi, mental, dan psikologi. Demikianlah, betapa pentingnya setiap individu mempunyai tanggungjawab dalam menyumbang kepada kesejahteraan digital melalui aktiviti yang dilakukan dalam talian secara bersepadu dan holistik. Tambahan pula, penguasaan pengetahuan dan kecekapan berkaitan digital menjadi tunjang kepada pemerkasaan kecerdasan digital (DQ) dan membentuk kesiapsiagaan kemahiran masa depan dalam kalangan belia.

PublicationMetaphor translation in Chinese documentaries: a case study of 'A bite of China'( 2024-12)
;Cai YujieSiti Balkis MKM Mohamed IbrahimThis study explores the translation of metaphors in the subtitles of the Chinese documentary A Bite of China, using Newmark's metaphor translation procedures as a guiding framework. Documentaries are vital for cultural exchange and shaping international perceptions, making accurate subtitle translation crucial. Despite the growing popularity of Chinese documentaries, their subtitles often suffer from inconsistencies and lack a solid theoretical foundation. This results in translations that may be inaccurate or fail to adhere to established principles, potentially diminishing their ability to convey the intended message and cultural details to global audiences. The study seeks to investigates the extent to which metaphors are used in the documentary's subtitles and identify the types of metaphors in the subtitles of the documentary translated from Mandarin into English. By examining the relationship between metaphor translation and subtitle translation, this study emphasizes the critical role of precise translations in promoting Chinese culture internationally and enhancing the global reception of Chinese documentaries.3 29 -
Publication“Narrative Application in Gameplay”: the enhancement of creative thought of teaching staff at the Centre for International Languages, UniMAPThis paper discusses the narrative or storytelling aspect of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs). The primary intention of this paper is to introduce TTRPGs as an effective alternative teaching and learning method that could benefit students in classrooms. The activities implemented could train students to be more creative, think outside the box, and spontaneously generated narrative and infused with characteristics such as – in this case – bravery, comedy, and horror-comedy. The research subjects are 6 teaching staff of the Centre for International Languages, UniMAP. The participants comprise of four English language teachers, one Bahasa Melayu teacher and one Bahasa Melayu lecturer. Each participant has their duties. One is the gamemaster who acts as the general narrator and arbiter of the rules of the game, while the other five are players who play roles within the setting of the game. The TTRPG used in the game sessions was Cubicle 7's The Laundry RPG based on author Charles Stross' series of horror-comedy novels, The Laundry Files. Three sessions were run from November 2018 to March 2019, each taking from 90 minutes to two hours. In helping to develop creative ideas using The Laundry RPG, three episodes of the narrative were derived from the gameplay of the TTRPG, each from one session. First is entitled The New Normal, the second an Unbelievably Wooden Dialogue and the third episode Getting Ahead of Themselves. The Narrative Paradigm theory framework by Walter Fisher (1985) is used in the analysis of the discussion of this paper. PublicationOrang Kurang Upaya’ dan ‘Orang Kelainan Upaya’: analisis kesantunan berbahasa dalam penulisan media akhbar(Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2025-06)Pemilihan kata dalam konsep kesantunan berbahasa merupakan aspek yang penting dalam penulisan. Pemilihan kata bukan hanya sekadar menyampaikan idea yang difikirkan, namun pemilihan kata seharusnya sesuai dengan komunikasi interaksi sosial. Kajian ini membincangkan penggunaan kata ‘Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU1)’ dan ‘Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU2)’ berasaskan data akhbar dalam talian di Malaysia. Aspek yang ditumpukan ialah gelagat kehadiran penggunaan kata OKU1 dan OKU2 dalam data akhbar dalam talian. Permasalahan kajian ini adalah wujudnya penggunaan istilah yang tidak seragam dalam penulisan akhbar bagi OKU yang merujuk “Orang Kurang Upaya” dan “Orang Kelainan Upaya”. Penggunaan kata OKU telah termaktub dan digunakan dalam Akta 685, iaitu Akta Orang Kurang Upaya 2008. Teori Kesantunan oleh Brown & Levinson (1987) dimanfaatkan bagi menghuraikan pemilihan penggunaan kata tersebut. Analisis kajian mendapati bahawa penggunaan kata OKU2 “Orang Kelainan Upaya” adalah lebih santun dan sesuai digunakan dalam penulisan media, komunikasi rasmi dan interaksi sosial. Menurut Teori Brown & Levinson (1987), pemilihan kata “Orang Kelainan Upaya” berupaya memelihara muka positif dan negatif seterusnya dapat mengelakkan rasa rendah diri atau stigma negatif berbanding istilah “Orang Kurang Upaya” yang kurang sesuai kerana menonjolkan kekurangan golongan tersebut.

PublicationPengaruh sosiokognitif generasi Z terhadap jati diri Bahasa Melayu( 2020-12)Junaini KasdanKajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti tahap jati diri bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan Generasi Z (Gen Z) di Malaysia berdasarkan perspektif Sosiokognitif. Secara khususnya kajian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh sosiokognitif yang melatari Gen Z terhadap tahap jati diri bahasa Melayu mereka. Kajian ini melibatkan 660 orang responden daripada Gen Z, yang dipilih berdasarkan lokasi tempat tinggal bandar, pinggir bandar dan luar bandar di seluruh Malaysia. Instrumen soal selidik digunakan dan diedar menggunakan ‘Google Form’ untuk pengumpulan data. Instrumen yang dibangunkan oleh pengkaji mempunyai tahap keesahan dan kebolehpercayaan yang tinggi, iaitu α =0.75 hingga α = 0.91. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensi menggunakan Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) versi 25.0. Kajian menggunakan empat pemboleh ubah utama yang berfungsi sebagai latar sosial Gen Z iaitu jantina, kaum/etnik, aliran pendidikan dan lokasi kediaman. Tahap jati diri bahasa Melayu Gen Z diukur berdasarkan empat indikator iatu sikap, persepsi, penghayatan dan pengamalan bahasa Melayu mereka. Kajian mendapati bahawa terdapat perbezaan sikap, persepsi, penghayatan dan pengamalan bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan Gen Z yang mempunyai latar belakang sosial yang berbeza. Perbezaan ini seterusnya akan mewujudkan pula perbezaan tahap jati diri bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan mereka.

PublicationPenggunaan kaedah pengajaran dan strategi komunikasi dalam penulisan bahasa Arab( 2021-06)Nurmasturah JamilKajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti kaedah pengajaran yang digunakan oleh guru dan strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh pelajar dalam aspek penulisan Bahasa Arab bagi subjek Al-Lughah Al- ‘Arabiah Al-Mu’asirah (LAM). Seramai 20 orang guru yang mengajar subjek LAM di beberapa buah Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK) dipilih sebagai sampel kajian. Borang soal selidik dan temu dan temu bual digunakan sebagai instrumen bagi mendapat data penggunaan kaedah pengajaran dan jenis strategi komunikasi. Data dianalisis berasaskan deskriptif asas dengan melihat kepada kekerapan dan peratusan penggunaan kaedah pengajaran dan strategi komunikasi sahaja. Pengkelasan strategi komunikasi mengguna pakai Strategi Komunikasi Dornyei & Scott (1997). Kajian mendapati bahawa sebahagian besar responden cenderung menggunakan kaedah pengajaran berbentuk ajuk hafal, syarahan, aktiviti dan permainan, induktif, pembentangan, komunikatif, terjemahan dan deduktif. Manakala, kaedah langsung kurang digunakan dalam aktiviti pengajaran LAM. Guru turut berpendapat bahawa kebanyakan pelajar sering menggunakan strategi terjemahan literal, pengulangan, rayuan kerjasama, penghampiran, penghafalan dan penghuraian semasa menulis dalam Bahasa Arab. Sementara strategi penciptaan perkataan baru, peninggalan mesej dan penukaran kod bahasa kurang digunakan dalam penulisan. Dapatan kajian ini secara tidak langsung memberi implikasi terhadap kaedah pengajaran dan pembelajaran Bahasa Arab dalam usaha meningkatkan penguasaan komunikasi bahasa asing dalam kalangan pelajar.

PublicationPerbandingan kata kerja dalam dialek Melayu Kedah dengan bahasa Melayu standard( 2021-12)Kajian ini berkaitan dengan perbandingan kata kerja dalam dialek Melayu Kedah dengan Bahasa Melayu Standard dengan berfokuskan kepada apakah jenis-jenis kata kerja yang digunakan dalam dialek Langgar dan bagaimanakah cara menganalisis kata kerja dalam dialek Langgar. Pengkaji memfokuskan kajian ini di Langgar, satu daerah yang pesat membangun di Kedah. Kajian ini dilakukan bagi mengenalpasti serta mengetahui perbezaan kata yang terdapat dalam dialek Melayu Kedah yang difokuskan kepada dialek Melayu Kedah di Langgar yang berlokasi di Alor Ketar, Kedah dengan bahasa Melayu Standard berdasarkan kepada aspek-aspek linguistik seperti analisis sintaksis terhadap perkataan yang terdapat dalam dialek Melayu Kedah. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti jenis kata kerja yang digunakan dalam dialek Langgar dan menganalisis kata kerja dalam dialek Langgar menggunakan Kerangka Minimalis bahasa Melayu Standard. Pengkaji menggunakan kaedah temu bual, iaitu menemu bual beberapa orang penduduk yang tinggal di Langgar. Dapatan kajian mendapati 15 perkataan kata kerja dalam dialek Melayu Kedah dan bahasa Melayu baku dipercayai boleh mendatangkan kekaburan bunyi kepada bukan penutur asli dialek Melayu Kedah, namun menetap di Langgar, Kedah. Melalui kajian ini, dapat memberi pendedahan kepada masyarakat tentang perkataan atau kata yang terdapat dalam dialek Melayu Kedah yang memiliki makna serta sebutan yang berbeza dengan bahasa Melayu Standard. Seterusnya, adalah untuk menghuraikan makna kata atau dalam dialek Melayu Kedah yang memiliki makna yang sedikit berbeza dengan makna dalam bahasa Melayu Standard.

PublicationPercampuran kod bahasa dalam lagu: satu kajian kualitatif terhadap lirik lagu raya terpilihKajian ini membincangkan mengenai percampuran kod bahasa dalam lagu raya terpilih. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengenalpasti percampuran kod bahasa dalam lirik lagu raya terpilih dan melihat penerimaan pendengar terhadap lagu raya tersebut melalui jumlah tontonan di Youtube dan undian suka (like) atau tidak suka (dislike) bagi setiap lagu raya. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan mengkaji lirik lagu raya terpilih dalam bahasa Melayu dan menganalisis penggunaan percampuran kod bahasa dalam lirik tersebut. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa percampuran kod bahasa dalam lirik lagu raya boleh memberikan impak terhadap penerimaan pendengar terhadap lagu tersebut. Penggunaan percampuran kod bahasa boleh memberikan kepelbagaian dan keunikan dalam lirik lagu raya serta menarik minat pendengar. Kajian ini diharap dapat memberikan pandangan dalam memahami kepentingan percampuran kod bahasa dalam lagu Melayu moden khususnya kepada lagu raya.

PublicationProsedur terjemahan Bahasa Istana dan Bahasa Klasik dalam terjemahan intralingual Hikayat Bayan Budiman( 2019-12)Nur Syamilah Mat SaidBerdasarkan amalan penterjemahan, makalah ini membincangkan prosedur terjemahan bahasa istana dan bahasa klasik dalam terjemahan intralingual Hikayat Bayan Budiman berdasarkan panduan pemindahan bahasa yang digagaskan oleh Za'ba (1934). Terjemahan intralingual merupakan terjemahan yang dilakukan dalam bahasa yang sama. Bentuk terjemahan boleh melibatkan pengungkapan semula atau parafrasa atau pentafsiran lambang verbal dengan makna lambang yang lain dalam bahasa yang sama. Za'ba dalam bukunya Ilmu Mengarang Melayu (1934) menggariskan beberapa panduan pemindahan bahasa yang sesuai dijadikan panduan kepada penterjemah dalam menangani cabaran yang timbul sebelum dan semasa proses terjemahan dilakukan. Dalam penterjemahan bahasa istana, penterjemah cenderung menggunakan prosedur terjemahan parafrasa, neutralisasi, nota kaki dan beberapa prosedur terjemahan lain dalam menangani cabaran terjemahan bahasa Melayu klasik kepada bahasa Melayu moden. Penterjemah juga turut menyuaipadankan panduan terjemahan yang diberikan oleh Za'ba dengan kaedah terjemahan komunikatif yang diutarakan oleh Newmark (1988) dalam melakukan terjemahan. Cabaran yang dikenal pasti dalam menterjemah bahasa istana dan bahasa klasik dalam Hikayat Bayan Budiman adalah untuk mengekalkan kesesuaian unsur sintaksis bahasa Melayu moden tanpa mengabaikan keindahan bahasa yang menjadi nadi dalam teks bahasa Melayu klasik. Selain itu, aspek stailistik dan keindahan gaya penulisan bahasa Melayu klasik turut cuba dikekalkan dan diperkenalkan dalam teks sasaran. Cabaran yang diketengahkan dan juga cadangan penyelesaian yang dikemukakan oleh penterjemah diharapkan mampu memberi panduan dalam penterjemahan bahasa istana dan terjemahan intralingual bahasa Melayu dan turut membantu menggalakkan perkembangan terjemahan intralingual di Malaysia.

PublicationRetorik iklan perniagaan: analisis iklan produk makanan & minuman dalam media sosial( 2024-12)Junaini KasdanDalam era digital yang semakin berkembang pesat, media sosial telah menjadi platform utama bagi perniagaan untuk mempromosikan produk dan perkhidmatan mereka. Media sosial bukan sahaja menawarkan jangkauan yang luas tetapi juga membolehkan interaksi langsung dengan pengguna. Melalui media sosial, perniagaan dapat menyasarkan bakal pengguna dengan lebih tepat berdasarkan data demografi dan minat pengguna. Seiring dengan itu, iklan produk makanan dan minuman di media sosial telah menjadi salah satu strategi pemasaran yang paling popular. Bagi memastikan matlamat pengiklanan tercapai, penggunaan bahasa yang berkesan mampu mempengaruhi tindakan pembelian pengguna. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kaedah retorik perniagaan yang digunakan dalam iklan perniagaan khususnya iklan produk makanan dan minuman yang diiklankan dalam media sosial. Iklan-iklan yang terpilih akan dianalisis berlandaskan kaedah retorik iklan perniagaan oleh Asmah Haji Omar (2016). Hasil kajian ini dapat menjadi panduan bagi para perniaga untuk meningkatkan keberkesanan iklan mereka dan seterusnya memperkukuh kedudukan mereka dalam pasaran yang berdaya saing.

;Jasin Abd HalimThis study analyses the cases of risk-taking behaviour among young adolescents and their subsequent imprisonment from 2002 to 2015. Evidence shows a signiAicant rise in risktaking behaviours among adolescents during this period, resulting in increased detention. The experience of incarceration, particularly for young females, is shown to have profoundly negative psychological consequences. These stem from the loss of freedom, separation from family, exposure to harsh and uncertain environments, and the development of inmate subcultures. The resulting trauma includes heightened anxiety, bullying, distorted mental health, and self-destructive behaviours such as depression, self-injury, and suicidal ideation. The paper calls for a shift towards trauma-informed, rehabilitative approaches in juvenile justice.15 1 -
PublicationSikap dan penghayatan jati diri Bahasa Melayu generasi Z (Gen Z) dalam menempuh Revolusi Industri 4.0( 2020-12)Junaini KasdanKemaraan era Revolusi Industri 4.0 (RI4) yang pastinya berkaitan dengan bidang Sains dan Teknologi didapati turut memberi kesan terhadap sistem pendidikan negara. Semua Institusi Pengajian Tinggi, sama ada awam mahupun swasta berusaha keras bagi memastikan produk yang dihasilkan melalui program-program yang ditawarkan memenuhi keperluan pasaran pekerjaan berteraskan RI4. Ironinya, bidang Sains dan Teknologi ini sentiasa dikaitkan dengan keperluan yang tinggi terhadap penguasaan bahasa Inggeris. Sejak pertengahan tahun 2010, istilah RI4 semakin tersebar di negara ini hingga menimbulkan kebimbangan terhadap kedudukan bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa kebangsaan dan bahasa ilmu. Sebenarnya, selagi penuturnya terus mendaulatkan dan berusaha melestarikan serta memperkaya bahasa ini, Bahasa Melayu tidak akan terancam dengan kemaraan era RI4. Namun persoalannya adakah penutur bahasa Melayu khususnya dalam kalangan generasi Z (Gen Z) mempunyai sikap untuk mendaulatkan dan berusaha melestarikan serta memperkaya bahasa ini. Justeru, kajian ini dijalankan dengan tujuan untuk melihat bagaimana tahap sikap dan penghayatan generasi Z terhadap bahasa Melayu yang menjadi antara asas pembinaan jati diri bahasa kebangsaan. Adakah tahap jati diri mereka terhadap bahasa kebangsaan berada pada tahap yang membimbangkan atau tidak? Generasi ini juga dikenali sebagai generasi digital yang mahir akan teknologi informasi dan berbagai aplikasi komputer. Bagi mencapai tujuan kajian, instrumen pengukuran jati diri bahasa yang dibangunkan khusus untuk kajian ini dimanfaatkan.

PublicationThe analysis of course and teaching evaluation for language classes during COVID-19 pandemicThe need for educational innovation to train educators to teach online is becoming more critical as online learning in higher education has increasingly grown over the past decade. Some researchers have suggested that teachers need a radical shift in their approach to teaching as they move from traditional to online classrooms. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected students and lecturers in higher education institutions, as well as teaching-learning processes, leading to the inevitable acceptance and implementation of online teaching and learning. Coping with online teaching challenges provides an opportunity for the lecturers to work as a team in empowering each other to deliver lessons online. In this study, four key considerations of online teaching and learning which are learning tools, pedagogy, assistance for learners and administration (CoL, 2020) were used as a guideline in designing the course content for, and delivery of Preparatory English course. This paper will discuss the students’ overall course evaluation and teaching evaluation of two lecturers who taught the course. One hundred sixteen engineering and technology students participated in this study between Week 1 to Week 6 (face to face classes) and Week 7 to Week 14 (online classes). A quantitative method was used to assess the lecturers’ teaching performance, based on students’ course and teaching evaluation. The study revealed the success of the course delivery and teaching evaluation with students’ rating of the two at 93.9% and 94.5% respectively. The study supports Vygotsky’s social constructivism theory which claims that a person has not only a set of abilities but also a set of potential skills that can be realised if given the proper guidance from others. The results of this study help us to understand that a proper key considerations of online learning have played positive impact towards students’ evaluation results.
