PublicationLearning styles: an exploratory study of foreign learners learning styles preferences at University Malaysia Perlis. a case study.(Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2010-11-12)
; ; ;“Learners with a strong preference for a specific learning style may have difficulties in learning if the teaching style does not match with their learning style” Felder & Spurlin (1988) With this in mind, a study was conducted to investigate the learning styles of foreign students from University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) who took the Yemen Preparatory Programme as an effort to maximise the students’ English language learning potentials. This study is a preliminary report that aims to identify and categorize the learning styles of these international students. In other words, identify the learning style preferences of the students. The Index of Learning Styles (ILS) questionnaire developed by Felder and Soloman (2004) was adopted. The ILS questionnaire was based on Felder and Silverman's (1988) model and reported to be valid, reliable and suitable in identifying learners' learning styles (Felder and Spurlin, 2005). Results obtained would help in understanding the UniMAP Foreign students’ learning styles which would contribute in raising UniMAP’s English Language Instructors awareness of such styles especially in the development of course materials and pedagogy which is important in the learning and teaching process of the English Language to foreign learners. -
PublicationResearch trends on Pekasam as heritage food in Malaysia( 2023-04-24)
; ; ; ;Ali M.E.M. ;Mohamad R.B.F.Understanding heritage food is important and useful for planning of national identity conservation, gastronomy tourism marketing and food safety. However, research on heritage food is not uniform globally; it tends to be concentrated in specific areas or region, and thus would hinder our understanding of heritage food acceptance, marketability and sustainability. This study examined the trends in heritage food research, namely Pekasam over the past decade by analysing publication data from Scopus through Systematic Literature review method. In particular, this study focused on the countries in which the studies were done, the affiliation of the authors, the funding sponsor, the types of publication discipline area of research, and citation details. A total of 148 publications were examined. The results showed that research on heritage food of Pekasam is not only scarce, to such an extent a large number of the research published are in the discipline of agriculture, chemistry and engineering. Despite the small number of research publications on Pekasam, the citations on the existing publications have grown exponentially since 2017 indicating that Pekasam is a potential research topic in the area of heritage food.34 2 -
PublicationDescription on research article introduction section by computer science researchers in Malaysian private universities( 2018)
; ;Norkhairi Ahmad ; ;Norlizawati GhazaliEunice M. AclanThe competition and pursuit for better ranking within the academia drive a more prevailing and urgent need to increase the number of research publications. This paper examines twenty research article introduction sections written in English to identify the rhetorical patterns and structures for better understanding on how the writers write. The research articles are written by the Computer Science researchers in Malaysian private universities. This paper presents the results of the move analysis on the rhetorical structure of the selected text and the descriptions on how the moves were accomplished by the writers. In general, the results show that the writers utilised the Create a Research Space (CARS) model by Swales (2004). The three moves suggested in CARS model are establishing the research territory, establishing the research niche and presenting the present work. While all the three moves suggested in the model are fulfilled by the writers, some of the rhetorical steps which are proposed as obligatory steps in CARS model are being underutilised. Such underutilisation calls for more emphasis and employment on the respective rhetorical steps. The respective rhetorical steps are presenting positive justification, summarising methods, announcing principle outcomes and stating the value of the present research.6 52 -

PublicationUsing cross border collaboration project to encourage English language usage among Thai and Malaysian undergraduate students( 2020-06)
; ;Eunice Aclan ;People often turn to a second language to communicate when the native language fails to be the medium of communication particularly in international collaboration communication. The second language of choice must be a language that is understood by the speaker and the listener. Correct language usage does leave a good impression in many circumstances but in many collaboration activities, the message matters more than the accuracy of the language use. This paper examines the English language usage among the participants from two universities during a collaborative project. Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) have conducted a collaborative project for their undergraduate students. In order to encourage the use of English language, the participants are restricted to non-Thai speaking for UniMAP students and nonMalay speaking for RUTS students; with exception for a few students who acted as mediators for emergency situations. The use of English language is reported based on the perspectives of the students which have been gathered using questionnaires. Findings show that the program is successful in encouraging the use of English in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Findings also show that writing skill has the highest English language usage amongst the participants of this program.1 31 -
PublicationThe roles of artificial intelligence technology in enhancing remote education for university students in Chongqing, China( 2024-12)
;Peng Shasha ;Norehan HussinThis study investigates the roles of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing remote education for university students in Chongqing, China, focusing on the post-COVID-19 era. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), the research addresses two key questions: (RQ1) the reasons for using AI in remote education, and (RQ2) the challenges associated with its implementation. A search was conducted using Google Scholar, selected for its broad access to interdisciplinary scholarly works. Articles published between 2021 and 2024 were analyzed. The study found that AI enhances remote education by offering convenience and flexibility tailored to students’ individual learning paces and needs. It enriches the learning experience through diverse and engaging course content and enables personalized learning paths with resource recommendations based on students’ abilities and learning history. Key tools include virtual tutoring systems, intelligent assignment grading systems, and virtual laboratories, which collectively address educational gaps in remote settings. However, challenges persist, including technical adaptation issues, data privacy and security concerns, unreliable network connections, and a lack of interpersonal interaction. The paper concludes with improvement measures such as strengthening data security, improving infrastructure, and incorporating hybrid learning approaches.35 3 -

PublicationThe rhetorical moves of abstracts in thesisAbst-ract plays an important role in representing research articles (RAs) or theses. A clear, concise, informative and interesting abstract helps the RAs or theses in terms of visibility and drawing attention towards the research. Being among the first writings read by the target audience, that is after the title and name of the researcher/s, it determines whether the rest of the RA or thesis will be read or not. Therefore, this paper draws attention to the rhetorical moves found in Engineering discipline thesis abstracts compared with the TEFL discipline thesis abstracts. The sample of the study are 10 thesis abstracts, selected from the best thesis award recipients of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). All the thesis analysed are from the engineering discipline and are written in English. The corpus size is 4540 words. Then, the result obtained were compared with a previous study on TEFL thesis abstracts done by [1]. The study uses Move analysis guided by CARS Model (2004) and utilizes frequency count (presence of Move). The findings of the study show that Move 3 is the most utilized Move in these abstracts. Move 3 is present in all of the theses for both the Engineering and TEFL abstracts. The Move step analysis indicated that for Move 2, the Engineering discipline thesis has more occurrences as compared with the TEFL discipline abstracts. The finding can be used by instructors for teaching abstracts writing based on best practice and from a more personalized perspective taking into account the discipline and cultural variation of the abstracts. As most instructors teaching academic writing in university comes from the linguistic or English language education background, it is hoped that the comparison made in this study would benefit those instructors teaching academic writing, particularly abstract writing for Engineering students.
