Publication"A binding contract between the dominant and the submissive”: linguistic analysis of gender bias in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)( 2022-12)
;Papada Srithreerawichai ;Alisa Lekdam ;Yadsamin MuprasitPum ChanpomLanguage, a significant tool for communication, is implemented to express an interlocutor’s attitude. Their language choice can imply manipulation of power or discrimination between sexes, also known as sexist language. Since dialogues in movies represent real-world communication, this study aims to delve into the sexist language depicted in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), a romantic drama film. In particular, the genre reflects the apparent discrepancy between male and female counterparts in terms of language and gender bias. The movie was then selected as the main text for the linguistic investigation of sexist language in this descriptive qualitative research. The essential framework in this research is centered extensively on Sara Mills’ theory regarding language and feminism encompassing overt sexism and indirect sexism. Overt sexism is categorized into six types including generic pronouns, generic nouns, non-parallel terms, sexism in proverbs, sexism in swear word, and derivation. On the other hand, indirect sexism is categorized into six subtypes, namely humor, presupposition, conflicting message, scripts and metaphors, collocation, and androcentric perspective. The researchers observe that characters and their attitudes render sexist ideology while their utterances convey gender-related discrimination. -

;Jittima Choopun ;Napadon SornpakdeeWachira YangyeunThis paper reports on the results of a needs analysis on English topics for engineering undergraduate students. The data were collected from 44 electrical and 65 civil engineering students of College of Industrial Technology and Management, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) in the academic year 2019. The study employed a questionnaire for data collection. The data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation (S.D.) The findings revealed that all English topics for engineering were required by both electrical and civil engineering students at high level. Regarding the needs of English topics for electrical engineering, it was found that writing an engineering project (x¯= 4.57, S.D. = 0.545) was the highest needed and then it was followed by tools, equipment, and machines (x¯= 4.55, S.D.= 0.589) and engineering materials (x¯= 4.52, S.D. = 0.505). In terms of the needs of English topics for civil engineering, it was found that safety at work (x¯= 4.29, S.D.= 0.655) was the highest needed and then it was followed by describing a procedure or process (x¯= 4.29, S.D. = 0.631), engineering materials (x¯= 4.26, S.D.= 0.644), and writing an engineering project (x¯= 4.26, S.D.= 0.644) respectively. Another important result was that the researcher also came up with the realization that contents combined with English for Specific Purpose and online learning formats should be highly considered when developing the instructional materials in teaching English for engineering students. -
PublicationAn analysis of translation strategies of Tootsie’s vocabulary from Thai into English: a case study of a TV series, ‘Diary Tootsies the Series’( 2022-12)
;Akkapong Pakjan ;Kanokwan Kongpakdee ;Supawadee ChookerdThassanee ThasrabiabThe study examined the strategies used in translating the Thai TV series, ‘Diary Tootsies the Series Season 1 and 2’ written and directed by Piyachart Thongaum. Employing Baker's (1992) eight translation strategies of nonequivalence at the word level from Thai to English, the study identified the occurrences of each strategy, exemplified the techniques used, and described the translator’s intentions. Frequencies of occurrence were calculated to compare the use of translation strategies. The findings illustrated that seven of Baker’s (1992) translation strategies were used. The most frequently-employed translation strategy was Translation by a more general word, which accounted for 65 occurrences (36.72%) while the two least with 4 times (2.26 %) were Translation by using a loan word with or without explanation, and Translation by omission. The illustration-based translation, however, was not found. Furthermore, the study found 28 instances (15.82%) of literal translation, which was beyond Baker's (1992) framework. The majority of gay terminologies according to findings, drew on existing Thai words before evolving into new meaning, usually relating to sexuality, resulting in some Thai words not being directly translated into English. Also, the greatest emphasis was placed on meaning while retaining the tootsieness in the target language was the least important factor. Evidently, gayness in the original text was diminished when translated into the target text. This study can assist translators in becoming aware of the unique characteristics of ladyboys’ dialogues and in employing different non-equivalence translation strategies to translate idiosyncratic words in ladyboys’ subtitle scripts in order to effectively convey their original meaning and flavor. -

PublicationDevelopment and validation of teacher emotional support scale for the virtual classroom( 2021-06)
;Rowena Imelda A. Ramos ;Alden A. Catangay ;Levie L. Bicua ;Peter V. Datoy ;Abraham P. RaccaPrecious R. TayabenThe immediate shift from face-to-face classes to virtual learning because of the COVID 19 pandemic brought about challenges not only in delivering classroom instruction but also in establishing emotionally supportive environment which greatly affects students’ well-being and achievement. Most resources that have been provided for teachers are focused on using techniques to successfully deliver online lessons and manage assessments. Hence, this paper aimed to develop and validate a scale to serve as guide for teachers in creating an emotionally supportive virtual classroom. This cross-sectional study was intended to identify the components of teacher emotional support as perceived by the students. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated the existence of three dimensions of teacher emotional support in the developed scale namely, positive climate, teacher’s sensitivity, and regard to student’s perspective. Reliability results further support the consistency of the scale to determine the extent of teacher’s emotional support in the virtual classroom. Thus, the developed scale was considered a valid tool in measuring the emotional support received by the students from their teacher. Further studies are suggest to involve a more distributed sample and include the interaction of teacher emotional support to other factors of students’ well-being to test the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. -

;Sareena Daho ;Kansinee SaechinWararat WhanchitEnglish is often code-mixed in everyday Thai communication and the phenomenon seems far more common these days than in the past. The study illustrates the frequencies of English code-mixing in a reality television show and suggests possible motivating factors of such practice. For authenticity, we observed conversations in the reality TV programme “The Face Thailand Season 4 All-Stars”, broadcast in 13 episodes in 2018. The dialogues were collected and analyzed for frequency and parts of speech and the types of word formation were identified. The study found the most mixing codes in word and phrase levels. Of all 13 episodes, 5,011 code-mixing occurrences were recorded, of which 3,901 (77.85%) were words, and 1,110 (22.15%) were phrases, and the majority was nouns (68.06%). Code-mixing types mainly included hybridization (76.38%) whereas other types were much less common, such as truncation, reduplication, conversion, and word order. The study concluded that the Thais code-mixed English to serve effective communication, but the usage of the foreign code was adapted to suit the Thai syntax, particularly observed in hybridization, truncation, semantic shift, and conversion. It is, however, noted that the practice of code-mixing may be more prevalent to those with access to media and exposures to other cultures. The study further explored the speaker’s motivation in code-mixing and suggested the need for an updated compilation of English borrowings in the Thai dictionary of loanwords. -
