PublicationA comparative analysis of technical efficiency, technological change and total factor productivity in selected ASEAN+3 countries(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2023-07)
; ;Ishak Yussof ;Zulkefly Abdul KarimTotal factor productivity (TFP) growth in ASEAN+3 countries exhibits varied trends. This is due to the fact that each country has different skills and different levels of technological advancement. This study aims to analyse the trends in technical efficiency (TEC), technological change (TC) and TFP growth using the Malmquist productivity index method. The analysis is based on data ranging from 1981 to 2014 in selected ASEAN+3 countries. The results show that during the periods 1981–1985, 1986–1990, 1991–1995, 1996–2000 and 2001–2005, the contribution of TEC to TFP growth was higher than that of TC. However, during the periods 2006–2010 and 2011–2014, the contribution of TC to TFP growth was higher than that of TEC. Therefore, it is imperative for the countries to improve the quality of inputs such as labour. Hence, skilled workers are indispensable to produce higher productivity. -

;Muhamad Arif ;Muhammad Anas Ma'arifDiverse research findings pertaining to the proficiency of Islamic religious education teachers may serve as a starting point, if not a benchmark, for the development of such instructors' proficiency, particularly with regard to the proficiencies that are imperative for educators in the digital age. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the competencies of Islamic religious education teachers that have been mentioned most frequently in research over the past decade, as well as strategies for developing those competencies and technological (digital) competencies. To achieve this aim, this study employed a systematic literature review method by utilizing publication data spanning a decade (2013–2023) to investigate a particular theme. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) was utilized to evaluate the findings. This research shows findings regarding teachers' obligations to develop technological (digital) competencies, in addition to the four teacher competencies (pedagogical, professional, personal, and social). The aforementioned conditions are predicated on the necessity for collaborative, creative, and creative learning, which makes it highly sought after by students. In contrast, forthcoming investigations should strive to gather empirical data regarding approaches to cultivating digital proficiency among Islamic religious education instructors, given the prevailing inclination towards learner-centered learning in the twenty-first century as opposed to teacher-centered learning. -
PublicationA simultaneous equation model of FDI in tourism, tourism growth and poverty: development of model specification(IJSTR Publications, 2020-04-01)
;Intan Maizura Abd Rashid ;Irza Hanie Abu SamahForeign direct investment (FDI) inflows are used to address the economic problems, such as poverty and tourism growth. This paper has identified, after visualizing theoretical standpoints and empirical researches, that there is the linkage between FDI inflows and poverty-GDP nexus focusing on tourism sector. Contrasting with previous studies, this study not only observed the degree of the association between FDI in tourism sector (FDIT) and poverty (POV) but also investigated the relationship between FDIT and tourism growth (TG). While the amount of literature on FDIT, TG and POV using panel data and for singular countries has increased in the last few years, no research has identified the relationships among FDIT, TG and POV together using a growth framework and a simultaneous equation model. The end discussions show that FDIT has bidirectional causal relationships with TG and POV. Therefore, reviewing this chapter it gets confirmed that the research gap prevails in this particular area, that is, neither do a research conducted for evaluation of FDI inflows in tourism impact on poverty and GDP. Thus, in the light of suggestion of theories and empirical literature, this chapter paves the ground of building up a conceptual framework that is to describe the directions in recognizing how FDI inflows in tourism can reduce poverty and stimulate the economic growth and tourism growth.4 27 -

PublicationAn environmental assessment of the impacts of corruption, foreign investment inflow and trade liberalization in the rapidly emerging Malaysian Economy(Springer Nature, 2023)
;Bright Akwasi Gyamfi ;Stephen Taiwo Onifade ;Abdul Rahim Ridzuan ;Pabitra Kumar JenaIn the wake of various catastrophic consequences of climate change, Malaysia, a rapidly developing economy, is also inevitably experiencing environmental degradation that merits prompt and serious attention from policymakers and its government. Hence, this study simultaneously highlights the short and long-run dynamic connections between carbon emission in Malaysia and the trio of corruption levels, foreign investment inflow, and trade liberalization. The study also controls for a combination of other factors including energy use, GDP, and urbanization. A robust empirical analysis was conducted on time series observations for the country based on the recent Dynamic ARDL simulation. It was observed that Malaysia's per capita pollution levels significantly reduces based on the corruption perception levels during the sampling period while the economic expansion’s effect on emission levels is positive. Additionally, urbanization, trade levels and energy use all aggravate the emission levels. On the other hand, although FDI poses an insignificant environmental damage in the short run, its environmental sustainability enhancement roles were supported by its long-run negative impacts on carbon emission. Lastly, the EKC was established and as such, essential policy directions were provided for stakeholders in the rapidly emerging Malaysian economy. -

PublicationAttitudes toward Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria prevention behaviours among at-risk communities and health district officers’ efforts and challenges in promoting these behaviours: an elicitation study in Peninsular Malaysia(UKM Press, 2023)
;Arina Anis Azlan ;Hazwani Damanhuri ; ;Hafizah PasiEmma MohamadThis study explores at-risk communities’ attitudes toward Plasmodium knowlesi (P. knowlesi) malaria prevention behaviours using the Integrated Behavioural Model (IBM) as a guiding framework. This study also presents efforts and challenges faced by district health officers in Peninsular Malaysia in their role as the health authority for mitigating the disease. Seventeen informants were selected from at-risk areas in three states with high cases of P. knowlesi in 2019 (Johor, Pahang, Kelantan) to be interviewed. Semistructured interview questions were developed guided by the IBM framework. Three district health officers who were involved in malaria prevention efforts in the selected states were also interviewed. Qualitative data analysis using Atlas.ti 8 software was used to facilitate thematic coding. Five prevention behaviours were found to be prevalent among the informants and are hypothesised to be suited for behavioural improvement intervention among at-risk communities. The prevention behaviours identified are: consuming prophylaxis, wearing long sleeves, using bed nets, mosquito coils and insect repellent. Current efforts by health district officers for P. knowlesi malaria prevention include erecting warning signs, community education programmes, and empowering community influencers. Challenges faced by the health district officers include difficulty accessing remote locations, limited facilities, and military-specific issues. This study suggests that future prevention efforts focused on behavioural improvement among atrisk communities in Malaysia should concentrate on the five prevention efforts most prevalent among these communities. -
PublicationCoal consumption as a moderator in the link between industrial output and life expectancy in ASEAN nations(Springer, 2025-04)
; ;Nor Ermawati Hussain ;Rossazana Ab Rahim ;Abdul Rahim RidzuanThis study examines the relationship between industrial output and life expectancy in ASEAN countries from 2000 to 2021, emphasizing coal consumption as a moderating factor. Using the Panel ARDL method, the findings reveal that industrial output positively impacts life expectancy, highlighting the economic benefits of industrialization, such as improved healthcare access and job creation. Model 1's industrial output coefficient is 0.1542, while Model 2's is 0.2352, both models giving a p-value of 0.0000. However, this positive effect is significantly offset by coal consumption, which detracts from life expectancy due to environmental degradation and health hazards such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This coefficient is 0.0722 (p-value: 0.0000) in Model 2 and 0.8457 (p-value: 0.0000) in Model 1. The study further shows that the interaction between industrial output and coal consumption exacerbates these adverse effects, underlining the critical need for sustainable industrial practices. Practical implications include the necessity for targeted green policies, such as phasing out coal subsidies, adopting renewable energy technologies, and implementing carbon taxation, to mitigate the detrimental health impacts of coal consumption while maintaining industrial growth. Identifying critical thresholds, such as coal consumption exceeding 50% of the energy mix or industrial output growth surpassing 5–10% annually without corresponding energy efficiency improvements, provides actionable insights for policymakers. These findings highlight the importance of balancing industrial development with sustainable health and environmental outcomes through informed policy interventions.1 1 -

PublicationConstruct validity for measuring entrepreneurial readiness among Malaysian Higher Education students: A stochastic measurement model approach( 2018)
; ;M.S. Hj DinT. HazlizaInstrument construct is one of the most important issues in conducting research. Without proper consideration in tackling the issue, it is difficult for the instrument to be considered as valid and reliable. If construct validity is accurate, then it will provide a clearer and more precise descriptive analysis on the concepts being investigated. The most important criteria that need to be considered in answering the construct validity are reliability and validity. In traditional measurement model, the understanding of reliability and validity is totally different from the one offered by Rasch model. Regardless of the difference, an internal consistency is still widely being used as the primary method to measure the item sampling. Using this model, local dependence and item fit are most considered in getting valid, reliable, and consistent, hence its significance. Finally the study applies goodness of measure purposely to answer issues related to validity and reliability tests. Principal components analysis was carried out to test the construct of questionnaires used in the study.20 4 -
PublicationDeterminants of foreign direct investment in ASEAN+3 countries: the role of environmental degradation(MDPI, 2023)
; ;Muhamad Huzaifah Asbullah ; ;Zulkefly Abdul KarimBenjamin NangleForeign direct investment (FDI) can boost economic growth and provide job opportunities. FDI inflows in ASEAN+3 countries have dropped markedly, which may affect economic development in the region. Many previous studies have investigated a multitude of factors that can influence FDI, such as market size, inflation, trade openness, corruption, and inflation. Previous studies did not, however, consider environmental degradation as a potential factor. Besides corruption and inflation, imposing stringent environmental regulations, such as carbon pricing and taxes to reduce environmental degradation, might deter foreign investors from the country. This is due to heightened costs for foreign investors, which may cause FDI inflows to drop. To shed some light on the reality of this situation, this study examines whether environmental degradation can significantly affect foreign direct investment in the region. This study includes environmental degradation as a potential factor and employs the panel ARDL approach to analyse data from 1995 to 2019. Results show that environmental degradation, infrastructure, and corruption can affect the inflow of FDI in the long run. In the short run, inflation can affect FDI. The findings of this study can be utilized by policymakers in formulating the right policies to attract more investors. An increase in infrastructure facilities should be considered to attract more foreign investment. It is also vital for governments to reduce corruption and inflation to attract more FDI inflows. Environmental incentives should also be introduced to ensure that attempts to reduce environmental degradation do not affect FDI inflows.1 8 -

PublicationDetermining the optimal mix of institutional geopolitical power and ASEAN corporate governance on the firm value of Malaysia’s Multinational Corporations (MNCs)( 2018)
; ;Handayani Wuri ;Md. Salleh Mohd. FairuzThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between institutional geopolitics, ASEAN corporate governance quality and the firm value of Malaysia’s multinational corporation (MNC). We used the data of MNCs in Malaysia that were active from 2009 to 2013 as an evidence of MNCs from emerging market economies. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis and panel data analysis have been utilized to test the equation model. We also propose optimization analysis by using differential evolution method to capture the optimal mix of institutional geopolitics and ASEAN_CG on the firm value of MNC. Results reveal that the geopolitics of G7(Canada, France, German, Italy, Japan, Europe, and the United States), BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), and ASEAN (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia) are highly correlated with the firm value of Malaysia’s MNC. The power of institutional geopolitics, namely, military, material, and social power, influences firm value negatively and ASEAN_CG moderate the negative influence of institutional geopolitics on the firm value of MNC. Thus, it is importance for corporate management to understand the geopolitical changes of host countries’ and increase the compliance of ASEAN_CG in formulating their market value and segmentation strategies.2 17 -
