PublicationDielectric properties of Nephelium Lappaceum tropical wood( 2020-03-25)
; ; ; ; ;Zaizul M.A. ; ;Dahham O.S.Dielectric properties of rambutan wood (Nephelium Lappaceum) were investigated in three anisotropic directions, namely miters-cut, cross-cut, and rib-cut. Dielectric constants and dielectric loss factors were measured at ambient temperatures by using an impedance analyzer. The dielectric constant decreased as frequency increased from 4 to 1 MHz. Among the wood specimens, the rib-cut direction has the lowest dielectric constant, while the cross-cut direction has the highest value. A dielectric dispersion occurred within frequencies 100 Hz to 10 kHz, which corresponding to a relaxation peak as observed on dielectric loss factor spectra. The relaxation peak value of the dielectric loss factors shifted towards higher frequencies in the sequence of rib-cut, miters-cut, and cross-cut specimen. Above 500 Hz, the cross-cut specimen has the highest value conductivity than others. Generally, these variations were subjected to the anatomical structure in the wood, such as parenchyma, ray cell, vessel cell, and fiber cell.41 2 -
PublicationMedium sized industrial motor solutions to mitigate the issue of high inrush starting current( 2021-05-03)
;Azizan N.S. ;Azizan M.M. ; ; ; ;Starting of a medium or large induction motors generate such a large current during direct-on-line (DOL) starting process to the point that it can drop the voltage of power supply. The induction motor can be broken, its characteristics can be changed, and performances of the motor can be worsened. A significant higher starting current than the rated current can generate mechanical and thermal stress on the motor and the loads. High-voltage fluctuations, dips and sags can arise in electrical power systems associated with the motor. To overcome this problem, various starters were designed. There are several types of starters in which can be divided into conventional starters and power electronic drives. Conventional starters are such as direct-online, star-delta and autotransformer whereas the example for power electronics are matrix converter, frequency inverter and soft starter. In this paper, the design of autotransformer and soft starter are focused in order to compare inrush current during the start-up three phase medium sized industrial induction motor by using MATLAB/Simulink software. Both starters were targeted to resolve the problems inherent in the dynamic operation of induction motors, which included current and torque surges during the motor start up. The autotransformer gives the choice to consumer in selecting different tap values, in which is the advantage to consumer to vary their starting current and starting torque according to its application. On the other hand, the three-phase soft starter employs two anti-parallel connected switches in each phase. Thyristors act as the switches due to their higher power rating and high efficiency. Then, both methods will be compared to prove the best performance in mitigate high inrush current. The best of the two is likely to be the answer for mitigating the issue of high inrush starting current for a medium size motor at industries.32 1 -
PublicationDevelopment of five port reflectometer for reflection based sensing system( 2017-03-13)
;Setno Baharuddin ; ;Lee Kim Yee ; ; ;Zulkifly Abbas ; ;Five-Port Reflectometer is a microwave passivedevice where it implements the six-port algorithm to measure the complex reflection coefficient of material under test (MUT) through reflection on interface between MUT and microwave sensor. Initially, the Six-Port Reflectometer (SPR) was introduced by Engen in 1977 and major component used insix-port technique was designed in many types. When Riblet and Hanssonproposed ring junction with 5 ports only on 1981. Six ports ring junction has been reduced to five ports. In this paper, a dual frequency five ports ring junction circuit was designed, simulated and fabricated for reflection based sensing system. The fabricated five port ring junction is operating at frequencies of 0.64 GHz and 2.42 GHz. The measured result had good agreement with the simulated results for dual frequencies in terms of magnitude and phase.36 6 -
PublicationSmart Gateless System using RFID Technology in Universiti Malaysia Perlis( 2021-06-11)
;Ainur Fasihah Mohd Fazilah ; ; ; ; ; ;Muhammad Mokhzaini Azizan ; ; ;Albreem M.A.M.This paper describes a smart monitoring gate-less system by using RFID technologies that had been implemented in Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The objective of this system is to ease the security to monitoring the cars-in and cars-out from the main gate manually. The security can check and manage the staff by system management in PC. This smart monitoring gate-less system consists of RFID tag antenna that be attached at sticker's staff, RFID reader and software management application. For the software management application, this project used LabView as a simulation tool for the data acquisition. The data which contains of name, staff number, number plate, car model and color will be stored in cloud-based storage. All the information data can be accessed from any location because the security management can access it through mobile. This project will present how efficient the vehicle control application on campus which enable the security guard to check a car sticker either legal or illegal in a shortest way.8 35 -
PublicationPreliminary study of the polymesoda expansa based hydroxyapatite for medical devices coating application( 2020-12-15)
;Roslan M.R. ; ;Khalid M.F.A. ;Gilani M.A. ; ; ;Zoolfakar A.S. ;Hydroxyapatite (HA) which is a group of calcium phosphate (CaP) is used as a medical devices coating due to its ability to increase the bioactivity and biocompatibility of the device surface. The attraction of using waste seashells products is interesting due to its sustainability and low cost solution especially in biomedical application. Polymesoda expansa or locally known as Lokan is potentially rich with calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Here, the synthesis of HA was done via precipitation method by utilizing the Polymesoda expansa (Lokan) shells as the resource of calcium precursors. Hydroxyapatite synthesized from Polymesoda expansa was carried out with different pH solution (pH 9 and 13) in alkaline environment. The effects of pH on the morphological and chemical composition properties as well as the Ca/P ratio of HA powders were analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS). The finding demonstrates as the pH increases, the calcium apatite reduced and this had increases the Ca/P ratio.5 45
