PublicationMechanical properties and microstructural behaviour of microwave sintered WC–CoAbstract: Cemented carbides have been of great interest within industrially manufacturable hard materials for their mechanical properties. Microwave sintering is known for its application on a range of hard materials. Although it has been widely used, its effect on grain growth of materials still requires clear understanding. Three different types of particle size, ranging from 1–3 µm to 100 nm were used for microwave sintering where temperature was used in this study within the range of 1000–1400 °C, while pressure during initial compaction of powder particles was kept constant. The maximum hardness was observed in the order of nearly 1800 Hv for submicron samples, sintered at 1250 °C. Fracture toughness on the samples reached a maximum of 16 MPa √m for micron samples sintered at 1400 °C. Grain growth in all samples was not more than 1–3 µm, even without the presence of any commercial grain growth inhibitors as part of the composition. Line scanning between grains demonstrates the presence of homogenous Co, confirming good mechanical behaviour. The microstructural features associated to the sintering process have also been focused as part of the study, highlighting some challenges in the research. Graphic Abstract: Line scanning of WC (1–3 μm)–7.5 wt% Co (1–3 μm) sample, microwave sintered at 1400 °C[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

PublicationBusiness model transformation in the manufacturing company – how custom project governance framework enhances the chances of success( 2020)
;Chin Hoong Teoh ;The demand for complete solution providers is trending, and as a result, manufacturing companies, more than ever, are being challenged to transform their approach from hardware-centric to solutions-centric. Failure to do so could be catastrophic. Many companies have started the transformation in order to stay in business and also for enhancement of growth prospects. They work on increasing their chances of success through project governance that applies across a range of solutions. This paper shows that transformation success is enhanced through the use of a custom project governance framework that allows for the selection of the appropriate custom project governance for any solution category. The nature and relationship between the development work and customization of personalization has led the authors to opt for personalization theory as the theoretical lens. This study started with the formulation of the research process, followed by literature review, development work, and finally a qualitative longitudinal study in an advanced analytical equipment company. The positive outcomes from the development work that has been customized for custom solution businesses will allow researchers and practitioners to develop intangible customization of personalization for a project governance framework of their own to aid business model transformation in the manufacturing company.3 19 -
PublicationEffective synthesis of silicon carbide nanotubes by microwave heating of blended silicon dioxide and multi-walled carbon nanotube( 2017)
;Voo Chung Sung Tony ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;Nashaain Mohd NordinYarub Al-DouriSilicon carbide nanotube (SiCNTs) has been proven as a suitable material for wide applications in high power, elevated temperature and harsh environment. For the first time, we reported in this article an effective synthesis of SiCNTs by microwave heating of SiO2 and MWCNTs in molar ratio of 1:1, 1:3, 1:5 and 1:7. Blend of SiO2 and MWCNTs in the molar ratio of 1:3 was proven to be the most suitable for the high yield synthesis of β-SiCNTs as confirmed by X-ray diffraction pattern. Only SiCNTs were observed from the blend of MWCNTs and SiO2 in the molar ratio of 1:3 from field emission scanning electron microscopy imaging. High magnification transmission electron microscopy showed that tubular structure of MWCNT was preserved with the inter-planar spacing of 0.25 nm. Absorption bands of Si-C bond were detected at 803 cm-1 in Fourier transform infrared spectrum. Thermal gravimetric analysis revealed that SiCNTs from ratio of 1:3 showed the lowest weight loss. Thus, our synthetic process indicates high yield conversion of SiO2 and MWCNTs to SiCNTs was achieved for blend of SiO2 and MWCNTs in molar ratio of 1:3.4 32 -
PublicationMicrowave synthesis of silicon carbide nanowhiskers: Effect of molar ratio( 2020-01-01)
; ;Kahar S.M.Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive material for its excellent properties such as wide band gap, high chemical stability and thermal conductivity. The conventional methods for the preparation of SiC are time and energy consuming. In this paper, SiC nanowhiskers were synthesized by utilizing microwave heating. Mixture of graphite and silica of various ratio was heated to 1400 °C for 30 min at a heating rate of 20 °C/min. It was found that almost complete conversion of graphite and silica to silicon carbide nanowhiskers was observed for sample of mixture in the ratio of 1:3. Vapor-solid mechanism was suggested to explain the formation of SiC nanowhiskers.6 32 -
PublicationComplete solution fulfilment for the manufacturing-based company – how intangible customization of personalization enhances the chances of successThere is a trending demand in the industry to provide customers with total solutions rather than mere products, and as a result, manufacturing-based companies, more than ever, face stiff challenges to deliver complete solutions successfully. To increase their chances of success, project life cycles are applied across solutions development. This study aims to enhance the chances of success through the personalization of project life cycles. It starts with developing a project life cycle upon which personalization can be achieved. A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted to gauge how well the personalization accomplished its aims. The intangible customization of personalization would allow researchers and practitioners to arrive at their own complete solutions that fulfil their customers’ needs.
