Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA): Redesign of Joystick

Design is the first step in any manufacturing process where the most crucial decisions are made which affect the product's ultimate cost. The researchers used DFMA method in this study to redesign and improve a joystick in order to achieve the goal to decrease the number of parts, handling and insertion time, and improve the design efficiency for a joystick. The main emphasis in this research has been on the design stage of a product development, with a view to accomplishing an optimal design approach for current product.DFMA principles have been used to develop new design ideas and the final design will be evaluate and compared to the current design. In result, the assembly time for redesign then increased by 21 % with a decrease in the assembly time from 294.2s to 232.44s and an improvement in design efficiency by 26.5 % from 20.4 % to 25.8 %.

Design for assembly (DFA) analysis of old bicycle tire inflator

This Paper is studied on the assembly problem of old bicycle tire inflator in the early stage of product design. During producing a product, the most important decisions are the final cost of the product. The approach based on Boothroyd Dewhurst methods has been implemented in this study to provide a quantitative measure called the design efficiency based on an analysis of a product. The main focuses of this research are to analyze the current design efficiency of old bicycle tire inflator and improved design efficiency. The product was design by using UNIGRAPHIC NX. The components and manufacturing of the old bicycle tire inflator were undergone alteration with the design for assembly (DFA) and redesigned methods.

Analysis and Development of a Poultry Hatching Machine

The egg-hatching machine comprises a several main factors that has been adapted and developed in this machine. The main factors are temperature, humidity, turning orientation and ventilation. The development of the machine without considering these factors will lead to failure or low percentage of hatching success. Therefore, these important factors must be included and adapted to machine. The best temperature for egg incubation is 37.8 °C or 100 °F and for relative humidity is from 55% to 65%. For egg, turning and orientation can be done from 2 to 6 times daily. The angle for turning is from 30° to 90°. The use of forced-air incubation method in this machine instead of still-air incubation had helped to regulate the air and supply oxygen to the eggs in the chamber. Besides considering all factors, other supportive factor that will help to increase the percentage of hatching success also must not be neglected. The supportive factors are location to place the machine, insulation for preventing heat loses and hygiene or cleanliness of the machine. Although these supportive factors are not the main parameter for egg incubation, these factors also need some attention as they also one the keys for hatching success.

Design and Development of Pneumatic Air Engine using Linear Actuator

A study was performed to produce a pneumatic air engine using two linear actuators and then the linear motion was converted to a rotating motion using a crank shaft. This study aims to increase the use of linear actuators in pneumatic air engines as well as to apply pressurized air as an efficient and convenient transportation mechanism in line with the development of technologies developed through products available in the market. Two units of linear actuator such as pneumatic cylinders with two units of 5/2 way directional control valve with double solenoid actuation are used to control the cylinder movement. The cylinder will rotate the crank shaft when receiving a signal from the solenoid valve with 5 bar air pressure. In conclusion, the system can travel up to 153 meters for a 24-liter air-pressure with 5 bar pressure when the test is run for a charging cycle by the compressor motor. If the compressor motor able to charge the compressor continuously, the movement distance can be increased.

Redesign of bahulu production layout to improve the efficiency of process flow

This research presents the optimum efficiency improvement of process flow by redesigned the production layout using facility planning methods in a company producing traditional cakes which are bahulu that currently have bottleneck issue, inefficient flow and unnecessary excess movement between activities. The objectives of this study to improve the current plant layout by redesigned it with increasing the production efficiency and productivity of the company. To achieve this aim, there are several layouts generated using Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and Graph-Based Theory (GBT) and the Efficiency Rate (ER) of each layout was calculated. The layout with the highest rate was then selected and validated by using WITNESS software. The result showed that the ER of the selected layout improved from 74.49% to 93.40% and also increased the productivity and reduced the processing time up to 10%. The described case study will show how the efficiency and productivity of a real manufacturing system can be improved by redesign layout.

Design and development of a cordless screwdriver: An analysis

The aim of this paper is to focus on some important aspects of the use of cordless screwdrivers in situations of work. Emphasizes on comfort while user uses cordless screwdriver. Descriptors of comfort in the use of hand tools have been collected from interviews. Functionality and physical interaction have been found to be the most important comfort factors in using a screwdriver. The ergonomically modified screwdriver handle provides greater operational efficiency. The findings of this research is significant in contemplating on the differences between discomfort and comfort. Cordless Screwdriver with built-in power of 3.7 kilowatts has been established. A better battery, with a voltage display, was made comfortable for consumers. In addition, the soft grip handle will allow the consumer to have a relaxed grip when using the product.

Hard-porous-lightweight PM Fe-Cr-Al2O3MMCs sintered under hybrid microwave energy

This study reports on the effect of Al2O3 particles on the density of Fe-Cr metal matrix composite (MMCs) produced through PM route then sintered under hybrid microwave energy. The sample was prepared by mixing the Al2O3 particle in 3D-tubular shaker at six different weight percentage of Fe-Cr matrix started from 5 wt.% to 30 wt.% with 5% in increment. The sintering process was performed under controlled N2 atmosphere in a tubular microwave furnace. Determination of bulk density and porosity was done according to Standard Test Method ASTM B962 - 17, while ASTM E384 was used to determine the microhardness. Assessment of the sample was based on density, porosity, hardness and microstructure evaluation. The result show that incorporating the Al2O3 particle were significantly increase the microhardness, decrease the bulk density and increase the porosity of the in Fe-Cr composite.

Optimization of heating rate on hybrid microwave sintering of the PM Fe-Cr MMCs reinforced with Al2O3particle

This study reports the optimization of heating rate on the microwave sintered Fe-Cr-Al2O3 metal matrix composite (MMC). The heating rate was selected between 10°C/min to 60°C/min with increment of 10°C/min respectively. The samples were fabricated via PM route and microwave sintering was carried out in a tubular microwave furnace HAMiLab-V3 in N2 atmosphere purposely to avoid any oxidation and chemical reaction to samples. The microstructure of sintered samples was evaluated using SEM and bulk density and porosity were determined based on ASTM B962 - 17 and the microhardness were determined based on ASTM E384. The optimized heating rate of the sample was selected based on the micro hardness value and total porosity percentage as well as based on SEM microstructure analysis. The results revealed that the optimum heating rate occurred at 20°C/min due to the highest value of hardness achieved which is about 119.28 HV with at the highest bulk density about 6.07 g/cm3 and at the lowest total porosity about 14.55%. SEM micrographs also showed that the diffusion was mostly effective at 20°C/min heating rate compared to others, indicated that significant grain boundary diffusion of Fe matrix into Al2O3 particle was occurred.

Analysis of onion peeler machine using ansys simulation analysis

Onion is the important cooking ingredients in the world of a cook. The current method to peel an onion is by a traditional method. There are have many effects when using a traditional method such as used by a hand and knife. By using this traditional method, the probability of injured such as sore eyes and hand pain are too high. Beside that, the process also takes a long time if the user needs to peel in the large quantities. The development of onion peeling machine needs to achieve the objective such as increasing the safety, save time and energy of human. The method of use in this project in fabricating this machine is by analysing the source of information data and apply its knowledge in fabricating the onion peeling machine. The method of design is generated with followed the engineering design guided. The final design selection of machine transforms into a 3D drawing using CATIA software. And then, 3D CAD data are analyses using ANSYS CFX simulation software to analyses the flow analysis of the part design. From this result, it will be considered whether it is necessary to make improvements on the machine design to improve the capabilities and effectiveness.

The flow of design such as identifying the problem of the product, determining the objective of the research, identifying the customer needs, undergoing survey and analysis data to get the list of metrics. Besides that, house of quality and concept generation will help the research to get know whether the design is full fill the customer needs or not. Concept testing will help to identify the final concept selection. Modelling of the final concept can help to show the target marketing to give their own response on this research. Customer needs can help to make the product undergo further improvement.
