The style and creativity of southeast Asian calligraphy wood carving

This paper analyses the diversity of the shapes and styles of woodcarving artworks in Southeast Asia, specifically in Jepara, Indonesia which is the centre of woodcarving artworks production which is produced by exceptional art skills on beautiful and attractive woods. The artworks are created through a carving process with the use of specific carving equipment that is executed by the talented and skilful engravers who have had developed their talents and skills since their early days. Various models and patterns of calligraphy woodcarving were found in Jepara. That was spread to the entire archipelago were not merely as the woodcarvings for decoration and furniture, but they have been instigated as the Islamic art in the forms of the pulpit, doors, palaces, offices, museums, schools, mosques, houses, and others. They had become the manifestation of artistic and aesthetic works that underlie local customs, traditions, arts, and cultures. The woodcarving has its model, style, symbol, and philosophy that reflect the life of the individuals or society, but the creativity in its making represents the challenges, the opportunities, and the hopes. This study relies on the methodology of collecting data from the field investigation through the theory and practice of woodcarving art in Jepara. The objective of this study is to elevate the creativity of the woodcarving art of the Southeast Asia and to preserve the local cultural heritage. The outcomes of the research will present the analysis of the woodcarving calligraphies from Jepara as the primary producer of various engraving works in Indonesia, and to become a scientific discourse that reveals the richness and the legacy of the Islamic calligraphy art in the Southeast Asia.

President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration and the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation, 1963-1966: a review of the foreign relations of the United States document

This study focuses on the US administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson and its relationship to the Indonesia-Malaysia conflict from 1963 to 1966. The main objective of this research is to clarify issues concerning economic interests and communist threats that influenced President Johnson's administration's reaction to the confrontation. The emphasis is on the period from the end of 1964, when President Johnson replaced President John F. Kennedy, to the end of the conflict in 1966. This study employs archival research methods with material obtained from the National Archives of Singapore as well as documents from The National Archive in London. The main reference document is the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) file, which contains the President's statements, memoranda, and telegrams during the conflict. The primary document has been selected, processed, analysed, and compiled to form a more objective and authoritative argument. Furthermore, secondary sources such as theses, journals, books, and memoirs were used to create a discussion narrative. In the end, this study concluded that economic interests and the communist threat influenced President Johnson's administration's reaction to the Indonesia-Malaysia conflict.

Siri’ dan Pesse’: pembentuk nilai dan identiti Melayu Bugis

Kejayaan dan keberhasilan orang Bugis yang bermigrasi ketika dahulu ke Tanah Melayu tidak dapat dipisahkan dengan tampilan sifat khasnya yang ditopang oleh nilai dan identiti budaya yang diwarisinya, sama ada secara individu mahupun kelompok (kolektif). Nilai dan identiti Bugis tersebut adalah Siri’ dan Pesse’ yang menjadi pandangan hidup dan amalan kehidupan mereka. Walau bagaimanapun, konsep Siri’ dan Pesse’ sebagai falsafah hidup orang Bugis dianggap semakin luntur dan kurang difahami hari ini oleh masyarakat yang berketurunan Bugis disebabkan oleh perubahan sosial yang berlaku. Proses asimilasi budaya dan globalisasi yang begitu hebat memberi cabaran tersendiri terhadap nilai-nilai, adat dan tradisi yang difahami dalammasyarakat berketurunan Bugisterutama yang hidup di perantauan. Ekoran daripada situasi tersebut, ramai kalangan Melayu berketurunan Bugis hanyadapat mengenal dirinya sebagai berketurunan Bugis namun tiada memahami dan mendapatkan pendedahan konsep Siri’ dan Pesse’ sebagai falsafah hidup mereka. Justeru itu, kertas kerja kerja ini bertujuan untuk mengesan dan mendedahkan semula konsep Siri’ dan Pesse’ sebagai pembentuk nilai dan identiti di kalangan masyarakat Bugis.

Environmental impacts of construction projects in Pauh Putra Main Campus, Universiti Malaysia Perlis

Buildings are enduring, and cities have even longer lives. Their impacts extend into the lives of several generations of our predecessors to the consequences of unspecified resources, environmental pollution, and decaying climate conditions. The identification of likely impacts of construction projects on the environment according to severity is a task that must be accomplished for minimizing those effects. This study identifies the most common environmental impacts of construction projects in the Pauh Putra Main Campus, Universiti Malaysia Perlis and proposes the measures for their mitigation. The methodology includes a review of pertinent literature, observations of the general environmental effects of on-site construction activities, focus groups, and a survey among university staff, students, and construction workers to determine their perception regarding the environmental impacts of construction activities. The collected data from 50 respondents was presented in tabular form and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science software. The responses on the impacts of the ecosystem, natural resources, and public are linked to their relative importance index (RII). Most participant s were aware of environmental impacts caused by the construction project which prominently affected the ecosystem in terms of "noise pollution,""dust,"and "air pollution"(which are ranked first, second, and third with RII values of 0.57, 0.52, and 0.52, respectively). The majority of the participants ranked "use technological innovations materials and methods such as the industrialized building system"as the mitigation measure of controlling the adverse environmental impacts. The long-term asset value of a building depends on its capability to fulfil user needs, withstand changing environmental circumstances, and survive the progressing expectation of sustainability design quality.

The John F. Kennedy administration and the formation of the federation of Malaysia 1961-1963: A review of foreign relations of the United States (FRUS)

This study focuses on the administration of John F. Kennedy in the United States (US) and its relationship to the founding of the Federation of Malaysia from 1961 to 1963. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the domestic and regional concerns that led to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, which drew attention in U.S. foreign policy. The time span covered begins in 1961, when President John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States, and ends in 1963, when he died. This study employs archival research methodologies, which include the analysis of primary documents from selected archives, including the National Archives of Malaysia, the National Archives of Singapore, and the National Archives in London. The primary document has been selected, processed, translated, and compiled to produce a more objective and authoritative argument. The primary focus was on the United States' Foreign Relations document (FRUS), which was later backed by other sources such as theses, books, memoirs, and articles. In the end, this study concluded that the formation of the Federation of Malaysia was actually within the contemplation of US foreign policy on domestic and regional issues during President Kennedy's administration.

A recent study on Islamic religious education teachers’ competencies in the digital age: a systematic literature review

Diverse research findings pertaining to the proficiency of Islamic religious education teachers may serve as a starting point, if not a benchmark, for the development of such instructors' proficiency, particularly with regard to the proficiencies that are imperative for educators in the digital age. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the competencies of Islamic religious education teachers that have been mentioned most frequently in research over the past decade, as well as strategies for developing those competencies and technological (digital) competencies. To achieve this aim, this study employed a systematic literature review method by utilizing publication data spanning a decade (2013–2023) to investigate a particular theme. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) was utilized to evaluate the findings. This research shows findings regarding teachers' obligations to develop technological (digital) competencies, in addition to the four teacher competencies (pedagogical, professional, personal, and social). The aforementioned conditions are predicated on the necessity for collaborative, creative, and creative learning, which makes it highly sought after by students. In contrast, forthcoming investigations should strive to gather empirical data regarding approaches to cultivating digital proficiency among Islamic religious education instructors, given the prevailing inclination towards learner-centered learning in the twenty-first century as opposed to teacher-centered learning.

Analyse the impact of physician technical skills on health services quality in Malaysia by using SPPSS

The objective of this study is to examine the relationship of the physician technical skills with patient's satisfaction. This study was conducted at the Penang mainland general hospital under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Data was collected using questionnaires to n=115 outpatients who attended the hospital clinics except for psychiatric clinic. The finding in this study has proven that there was a strong relationship between technical skills by physicians and patient's satisfaction. Physician technical skills are seen as key determinants to improve health services quality in Malaysia.

The hegemony of religious elite in women’s leadership in Islamic boarding school: as regional head in East Java

The involvement of local Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) elite in regional head election in East Java becomes winning determiner. In direct local election, there are roles of religious elite which significantly influences constituent's vote. Elite utilizes religious hegemony in increasing societies politic participation during election. The era of new religious movement changes the tendencies of thinking paradigm that for the first time women emerges as regional head. This paper was aimed to analyses the hegemony of religious elite based on Pesantren in postmodernism era in regional head election especially at East Java. This research used qualitative research with descriptive perspective and content analysis of qualitative data which revealed that there are hegemony and patron client movement of Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) among kyai, students, alumni, sympathizer, and Pesantren communities as strategy to win regional head. In this research, researcher used elite theory approach and politic participation theory. Research data obtains from library and document analysis from the related institution. The formulation of this problem is how religious elite hegemony the societies in increasing public participation and convincing voters to vote women candidates as governor. The analysis result remarks the hegemony of religious elite becomes tool to obtain the power in regional head election because there are big influences of religious elite functioning giving dogmas to society through religious routines ritual such as religion speech.

Determinants of teacher motivation and performance: Individual characteristics, job, and organizational climate

This study aims to (1) describe individual characteristics, job characteristics, organizational climate, work motivation, and teacher performance, (2) analyze the influence of individual characteristics, job characteristics, and organizational climate on work motivation, (3) test their influence on teacher performance, (4) examine the influence of work motivation on teacher performance, and (5) explore the mediating role of work motivation in the relationship between individual characteristics, job characteristics, organizational climate, and teacher performance. This explanatory study involved teachers from SMA Maarif NU in Pasuruan in 20 districts, with a population of 485 teachers. The proportional random sampling method was used to select 110 teachers. Data were collected using a structured instrument distributed to respondents. The results showed that: (1) individual characteristics are shaped by interests, attitudes, and needs; job characteristics by skill diversity, task identity, task clarity, autonomy, and feedback; organizational climate by responsibility, identity, warmth, support, and conflict; work motivation by achievement, recognition, work rewards, and personal development; and teacher performance by professional, personal, and social competence. (2) Individual characteristics, job characteristics, and organizational climate have a positive effect on work motivation. (3) These variables also have a positive impact on teacher performance. (4) Work motivation significantly improves teacher performance. (5) Work motivation mediates the influence of individual characteristics, job characteristics, and organizational climate on teacher performance. This study concludes that work motivation plays an important role as an intervention, with the total influence of these variables on performance exceeding the direct influence

Analisis pengajaran Bahasa Melayu dan Jawi dalam Pelita Bahasa Melayu (PBM) karangan Za’ba

Za’ba nama panjangnya Zainal Abidin Ahmad, kelahiran 16 September 1895 di Batu Kikir, Jempol Negeri Sembilan, meninggal dunia 23 Oktober 1973. Nama Za'ba popular dalam Organisasi Kongres Bahasa dan Persuratan Melayu kerana ahli akademik dan penulis gerakan politik Akademik Malaya dan Agama Islam, juga dikenali sebagai sasterawan dan pemikir Melayu keturunan Minangkabau yang giat menulis sekitar tahun 1940an. Tokoh ini merupakan pejuang bahasa Melayu dan Jawi yang komited dan berbakat, Za’ba merupakan pengembang sastera berdasarkan Jawi dengan kaedah Za’banya. Kemudian kaedah pengajarannya dikembangkan melalui buku karangannya Pelita Bahasa Melayu (PBM) dalam tiga jilid. Kepelbagaian kaedah dalam buku ini telah menyumbang pelbagai ilmu yang kekal abadi lagi nyata sebagai bukti komitmen beliau memperjuangkan bahasa Melayu dan Jawi. Perjuangan Za’ba dibuktikan lagi dengan melahirkan kaedah pengajaran tersendiri melalui buku Pelita Bahasa Melayu (PBM) yang diguna pakai dalam memartabatkan bahasa Melayu tersebut dari masa ke masa. Kaedah beliau terus meluas dan digunakan ke seluruh wilayah Nusantara bahkan menjadi karya tulisan pengantar pengajaran dan pembelajaran menjadi panduan linguistik moden di pelbagai peringkat sekolah, berpola pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa yang berkesan. Kaedah beliau penuh simbol dan falsafah tersendiri mencerminkan kekayaan khazanah dan budaya masyarakat Melayu. Za’ba juga merupakan tokoh hebat yang telah pergi untuk selama-lamanya, tetapi karyanya tetap abadi sehingga kini. Semoga kajian ini dapat memaparkan analisis mendalam terhadap kaedah pengajaran bahasa dari Za’ba sebagai pejuang gigih dalam memartabatkan bahasa Melayu dan Jawi di Malaysia khasnya dan di Asia Tenggara amnya, sekali gus mampu menjadi satu wacana ilmu yang dapat mengungkap kekayaan khazanah warisan Melayu di Nusantara.
