PublicationEffect of different filler ( Er5356 and Er4043) toward mechanical and microstructure properties of the joint gas metal arc welding Aa6061-T6(Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2009-12-01)
;A.A.A. Aziz ;M.F.A Ibrahim ;Azman Jalar ;Syarif Junaidi S DjalilN.M. RashdiThe aim of this investigation was to study the mechanical and microstructure properties of the AA6061 aluminium alloy that have been jointed using gas metal arc welding process. Single V butt joint configuration has been prepared for the plate’s joining. Butt-joint welds were made on 6 mm thick plates using 21 – 22 V arc voltage. Two different filler ER4043 and ER5356 have been weld at the weld metal zone to weld Al alloy. Dynamic recrystallised microstructure in the weld metal zone was studied. It was shown that different grain sizes and shapes were found at the different zones. The tensile test, bending test and hardness test were used to investigate the mechanical properties of the sample. The mechanical properties of the sample were compared between weld metal and base metal. Result show that different filler may result in different mechanical properties. The results showed that the hardness was relatively higher in the base metal zone with value of 93HV compared to weld metal zone with value of 80.5HV and heat affected zone (HAZ) with value of 60.7HV. The couse insoluble intermetallic compound were indentified based microstructure evolution study of AA6061 aluminium alloy. It was found that, the precipitates for weld metal filler ER5356 were Al-Mg-Fe (grey colour) and Al-Mg-Si (black colour), while the precipitataes for weld metal filler ER4043 were Al-Si-Cr-Fe (grey coloured) and Al-Si (black colour). -
PublicationThe influence of filler metal on porosity formation of AA6061 aluminium alloy joints(Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2009-12-01)
;M.F.A Ibrahim ;A.A.A. Aziz ;A. Jalar ;J. SyariffM.N. RashdiPorosity is very important parameter to evaluate the quality of butt-joint since it is recognized to be one of the major concerns during welding of aluminium alloys. The filler metal used during welding process is believed to play a role on porosity formation in aluminum alloy welds. The present investigation is aimed to study the effect of different filler (ER4043 Al-5%Mg and ER5356 Al-5%Si) on porosity formation of AA6061 aluminium alloy joints by using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Butt-joint welds were made on 6 mm thick plates using 21 – 22 V arc voltage. The mechanical properties of aluminium alloy weld were characterized using tensile test and bending test. The porosity formation in weld zone was extensively studied, with the use of different experimental method (X-Ray radiography + image analysis, tomography), in order to obtain images of porosity. The highest porosity content was found densely using ER5356 filler weld with the percentage area value of 7.3 %, while ER4043 filler gave the percentage area value of 6.5%. The highly dense of porosity in ER5356 filler weld metal produced lower mechanical properties compared to ER4043 filler weld metal which contain less porosity. It is believed that Si and Mg contains of which are major elements in both fillers play important role in formation of porosity.
