    The competition and pursuit for better ranking within the academia drive a more prevailing and urgent need to increase the number of research publications. This paper examines twenty research article introduction sections written in English to identify the rhetorical patterns and structures for better understanding on how the writers write. The research articles are written by the Computer Science researchers in Malaysian private universities. This paper presents the results of the move analysis on the rhetorical structure of the selected text and the descriptions on how the moves were accomplished by the writers. In general, the results show that the writers utilised the Create a Research Space (CARS) model by Swales (2004). The three moves suggested in CARS model are establishing the research territory, establishing the research niche and presenting the present work. While all the three moves suggested in the model are fulfilled by the writers, some of the rhetorical steps which are proposed as obligatory steps in CARS model are being underutilised. Such underutilisation calls for more emphasis and employment on the respective rhetorical steps. The respective rhetorical steps are presenting positive justification, summarising methods, announcing principle outcomes and stating the value of the present research.

    Orang Kurang Upaya’ dan ‘Orang Kelainan Upaya’: analisis kesantunan berbahasa dalam penulisan media akhbar
    (Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2025-06) ; ; ;
    Pemilihan kata dalam konsep kesantunan berbahasa merupakan aspek yang penting dalam penulisan. Pemilihan kata bukan hanya sekadar menyampaikan idea yang difikirkan, namun pemilihan kata seharusnya sesuai dengan komunikasi interaksi sosial. Kajian ini membincangkan penggunaan kata ‘Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU1)’ dan ‘Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU2)’ berasaskan data akhbar dalam talian di Malaysia. Aspek yang ditumpukan ialah gelagat kehadiran penggunaan kata OKU1 dan OKU2 dalam data akhbar dalam talian. Permasalahan kajian ini adalah wujudnya penggunaan istilah yang tidak seragam dalam penulisan akhbar bagi OKU yang merujuk “Orang Kurang Upaya” dan “Orang Kelainan Upaya”. Penggunaan kata OKU telah termaktub dan digunakan dalam Akta 685, iaitu Akta Orang Kurang Upaya 2008. Teori Kesantunan oleh Brown & Levinson (1987) dimanfaatkan bagi menghuraikan pemilihan penggunaan kata tersebut. Analisis kajian mendapati bahawa penggunaan kata OKU2 “Orang Kelainan Upaya” adalah lebih santun dan sesuai digunakan dalam penulisan media, komunikasi rasmi dan interaksi sosial. Menurut Teori Brown & Levinson (1987), pemilihan kata “Orang Kelainan Upaya” berupaya memelihara muka positif dan negatif seterusnya dapat mengelakkan rasa rendah diri atau stigma negatif berbanding istilah “Orang Kurang Upaya” yang kurang sesuai kerana menonjolkan kekurangan golongan tersebut.

    Rhetorical structures of the introduction chapters of the engineering discipline PhD theses in Malaysian universities (closed until 9/27)
    (Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 2024)
    Writing a thesis is a complex yet crucial aspect of postgraduate studies, demanding high conformity to academic conventions. This is particularly true for PhD theses in the Engineering discipline, which present a unique set of challenges. This study aims to uncover the rhetorical structure of the Introduction chapters in 25 high-ranking Engineering PhD theses from Malaysia, applying Move Analysis based on the Bunton Model. The focus lies on the Introduction section, a part of the thesis often cited as the most difficult to compose. The findings reveal several novel insights: the identification of move-independent steps such as highlighting background information, reviewing prior research, and term definitions; a prevalent focus on claiming centrality and identifying gaps in existing research; the use of discipline-specific linguistic techniques; and the influence of institutional culture on chapter structuring. A distinct rhetorical model for the Engineering discipline in PhD thesis introduction from Malaysia was also discovered. These insights have both theoretical and practical implications, offering actionable guidelines for thesis writers, supervisors, academic writing instructors, and curriculum developers. The study thus fills a gap in existing research, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the academic writing process in the Engineering discipline in Malaysia.

    Perimeter description of research publications on drones by prolific engineering writers
    Teaching technical writing to engineering researchers particularly post graduate students is a demanding and complex task. Often the challenge faced by the language instructor is in having inadequate understanding on students' expected writing output which is engineering research publication. While the language instructors may find the language use aspect manageable, it is the understanding on expected writing output for engineering discipline that is a challenge; therefore, supporting language module developers to understand those expected outputs is essential and needed for the advancement in language teaching. In view on the need for the description of the targeted output which is engineering publication, this study focuses on supporting the understanding of engineering research publication specifically on drones. This study is aimed to describe the perimeter of research publication on drones written by prolific engineering writers. This paper uses bibliometric analysis method which is based on identifying the core research and authors, as well as the works that cited them. This study examines 275 research publications indexed in SCOPUS database and also investigates 1947 research publications that cited the 275 publications as reference source. The findings show that the publications are mostly articles, conference papers and reviews deriving mostly from the US, China and the UK whereas the citing documents are mostly from China, the UK and the US. This paper presents the description on the perimeter for both groups. Such description provides a ready narrative to language instructors as well as ready narratives and guidance on writing/content dimension for young scholars embarking on writing scholarly articles on drone research.

    The rhetorical moves of abstracts in thesis
    Abst-ract plays an important role in representing research articles (RAs) or theses. A clear, concise, informative and interesting abstract helps the RAs or theses in terms of visibility and drawing attention towards the research. Being among the first writings read by the target audience, that is after the title and name of the researcher/s, it determines whether the rest of the RA or thesis will be read or not. Therefore, this paper draws attention to the rhetorical moves found in Engineering discipline thesis abstracts compared with the TEFL discipline thesis abstracts. The sample of the study are 10 thesis abstracts, selected from the best thesis award recipients of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). All the thesis analysed are from the engineering discipline and are written in English. The corpus size is 4540 words. Then, the result obtained were compared with a previous study on TEFL thesis abstracts done by [1]. The study uses Move analysis guided by CARS Model (2004) and utilizes frequency count (presence of Move). The findings of the study show that Move 3 is the most utilized Move in these abstracts. Move 3 is present in all of the theses for both the Engineering and TEFL abstracts. The Move step analysis indicated that for Move 2, the Engineering discipline thesis has more occurrences as compared with the TEFL discipline abstracts. The finding can be used by instructors for teaching abstracts writing based on best practice and from a more personalized perspective taking into account the discipline and cultural variation of the abstracts. As most instructors teaching academic writing in university comes from the linguistic or English language education background, it is hoped that the comparison made in this study would benefit those instructors teaching academic writing, particularly abstract writing for Engineering students.
