Abstract
Based on Department of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics in Medan, North Sumatera, there is missing data of solar irradiation for the year of 2013. This paper presents to estimate the solar irradiation using Hargreaves method. The estimation based on latitude and monthly minimum and maximum temperature in Medan. Its result shows that the estimated solar irradiation using Hargreaves method, the average monthly solar irradiation is 6.47 kWh/m2. It is greater than the normal solar radiation (3 kWh/m2), which indicates that the sky in Medan is clear and very high solar irradiation intensity for the months in the year of 2013. It will generate a monthly electric energy of 841.40 Wh/m2. If all the lands in Medan (265100000 m2) are filled with horizontal PV panels, nearly 0.22 GWh of electricity can be produced per month. This shows the big potential of solar irradiation for PV power generation in Medan.
