| dc.description.abstract | Wind speed uncertainty is a huge challenge in wind energy conversion (WEC) systems especially for utility-scale wind turbines. As the wind turbine sizes continue to grow, advanced control strategies have become essential for a reliable and profitable wind power generation. This paper proposes a control approach where wind speed uncertainty is explicitly taken into account for a guaranteed stability and adequate tracking performance of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator Wind Turbine (DFIG-WT). The proposed design is based on the wind speed measurements that are corrupted with uncertainties. A Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI)-based robust controller is proposed where the uncertainty is modeled in polytopic sets. The control performances are assessed subject to two wind profiles i.e. step and real-pattern wind speed. Comparative studies are carried out against a classical PI based controller. The results indicate that the robust controller has inherently ensured the system stability even with the presence of uncertainty while simultaneously ensuring adequate tracking performance. Meanwhile, the PI controller even though great in tracking but cannot guarantee the system stability due to the uncertainty. | |
