Analysis of wavelet transform de-noising technique based on measured lightning return stroke electric field

This paper presents a difference type of wavelet transform de-noising technique based on measured lightning electric field. The lightning electric fields captured by two parallel plats sensor and the signal were analyses accordingly. In engineering application, lightning stroke current parameter will relate with electric fields and these parameters can be recognized by direct and in-direct measuring method. Therefore, measuring lightning electric fields (LEF) using parallel plate was done by many researchers. However, measuring LEF has many disturbances such as noise from other apparatus and other device. Therefore, de-noising of LEF signal is important to get useful signal for further research. For this reason, the Centre for Electromagnetic and Lighting Protection Research (CELP) group has been working on a research program to study and characteristic lightning using de-noising technique in order to process and analyse the radiated LEF produced during flash happens. Only three types of wavelet transform are selected and there are Daubechies, Symlets and Coiflets wavelet. The result will be discussed and the best will be selected based on the measured signal.

Performance of Restricted Fault and Bias Differential Protection Against Earth Fault on a Transformer

In this paper, the effectiveness of restricted earth fault and bias differential protection against earth fault on of transformer winding is presented. Earth fault is one of the failures that occurs on a power transformer winding. Its magnitude depends on how the neutral is connected and the location of fault. For a transformer which is connected to Neutral Earth Resistance (NER), as the fault moves towards its neutral, the magnitude of fault current decreases and the detection of fault diminishes, thus limiting percentage of winding that can be protected. To overcome this problem, restricted earth fault is employed. This paper will show that based on its principles, restricted earth fault protection is more sensitive and provide better coverage for the star winding against earth fault especially resistance earthed.

Lightning Impulse Voltage Stresses in Underground Cables

Underground power cables are crucial for transmission and distribution. Lightning can stress their insulation, but not directly. So, impulse cable testing is studied. This research examines the cable's transient response to standard and non-standard lightning impulse voltage waveforms. MATLAB Simulink was used to model a 132 kV wire with standard and non-standard impulse voltages. The IEC60060-1(2010) lightning impulse test uses a conventional waveform impulse voltage with a front time and a tail time of 1.2/50μs half value, while the non-standard test uses a front time and a tail time of 0.8/12s half value. Non-standard impulse waveforms are more accurate than standard waveforms. The impulse test voltage is four to five times the underground cable's operational voltage and must withstand five applications without damage. Standard and non-standard impulse waveforms are injected with 132 kV and 550 kV to evaluate insulation failure or damage. Standard lightning and non-standard impulse voltage waveforms do not cause insulation failure or damage. When 132 kV and 550 kV are introduced into the normal and non-standard lightning impulse waveforms, the overshoot voltage increases. The peak voltage of a non-standard 550 kV impulse voltage waveform exceeds the IEC impulse withstand voltage. The finding shows that non-standard impulse voltage waves create increased cable voltage stress.

Review on RTV silicone rubber coatings insulator for transmission lines

Nowadays, the usage of RTV Silicone Rubber as Insulator coatings are increased due to its advantages to avoid pollution flashover of contaminated insulator. Besides, the coatings can reduce the maintenance cost and scheduled routine. This paper had introduced the advantage of RTV Silicone Rubber coatings on insulator, such as good adhesion, nominal thickness range and good hydrophobicity. There are three method of coatings application, such as brushing, spraying and dipping. Suitable method is used to specific insulator application. Meanwhile, this paper also explained about installation of coated insulator in the field.

Analysis on Behavior Grounding Electrode Resistance base on Profiling Method

An earthing system or known as grounding system in an electrical installation where by the grounding system connects specific parts of that installation with the Earth's conductive surface for safety and functional purposes. It is the process of transferring the immediate discharge with the aid of the low resistance wire of the electrical energy directly to the earth. It is really an important role playing in electrical system part as grounding system give protection during fault or lightning occur. In addition, grounding system also give protection for human electrical appliance and building from electrical shocks due to electrical fault or lighting occur. In this research will shows that to identify the best location to install the grounding electrode. This method is used on 10 x 10 meters which is 121 point will be investigated. The result of 0.3m, 0.6m, and 0.9m were analyzed using MATLAB software to produce profiling and shows the perfect location to install the Grounding system electrode.

Accelerated thermal aging of Kraft papers impregnated with dielectric liquids

Accelerated thermal aging was conducted on Kraft papers impregnated with mineral insulating oil (MO) and palm insulating oil (PO), and the effect of aging time on the oils and Kraft papers was observed. Each sample consisted of insulating oil, dried Kraft paper, and weighed metal catalysts (copper, iron, zinc, and aluminum) in a bottle. Prior to aging, the bottles were left for 24 h at room temperature for impregnation to take place. The thermal aging experiments were carried out at 130 °C for 250, 500, and 750 h. The properties of the MO and PO (moisture content, acidity, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra) and the properties of the Kraft papers (tensile strength and colour) were determined. Results showed that the aged PO had higher moisture content compared with the aged MO. However, the Kraft papers impregnated with PO had better tensile strength after 750 h of aging, which may be attributed to the affinity of PO to moisture. This slows down the hydrolytic degradation mechanism. In terms of colour, the Kraft papers were darker than their original colour as the tensile strength decreased. To conclude, the Kraft paper impregnated with PO had higher tensile strength compared with those impregnated with MO.

The effect of semi-conductive and non-conductive nano particles in sunflower oil based insulation

Following the improvement of technology, more and more alternatives are introduced to improve the insulation material and one of them is the nanotechnology. Research had been done which confirm the enhancement of the transformer oil upon adding nanoparticles in term of dielectric strength, viscosity, relative permittivity and others. In this research, semi-conductive (ZnO) and non-conductive (ZrO2) nanoparticles with weigh to volume ratio of 0.05g/l are added to the sunflower oil based insulation and the effects are observed. The relative permittivity of added ZnO is higher compare to ZrO2 in mineral oil. The situation is opposite as ZrO2 yield higher permittivity with sunflower oil. In term of breakdown voltage, the addition of ZnO shows a better dielectric strength compare to ZrO2. The kinematic viscosity is also increase when both nanoparticles are added in which ZnO contributes a higher value.

Effect of concrete orientation as an enhancement material in grounding system

To achieve an excellent grounding system, an alternative solution was developed by using enhancement material to modify the soil surrounding the rod. These materials can effectively reduce soil resistivity and grounding resistance for a better grounding system. To achieve this goal, the fundamental part must be taken into account. In this study, the main objective is to analyze different concrete orientations as enhancement material in the grounding system. A 3-D orientation of concrete has been designed using Finite Element Method (FEM) software to analyze the performance of the electric field in the grounding system with different orientation of concrete. Every orientation of concrete had been clarified into four different cases which are full concrete, half concrete, three-quarter concrete, and a quarter concrete. From the result, full concrete is the best orientation of concrete design to be employed at the grounding site as it has a low electric field compared to the other concrete orientation.

Impact of temperature and irradiance on pv array performance and withstand voltage

Photovoltaic (PV) energy is increasingly recognized as an environmentally friendly source of renewable energy. Integrating PV systems into power grids involves power electronic inverters, adding complexity and evolving traditional grids into smarter systems. Ensuring the reliability of decentralized PV generation is crucial, particularly as PV systems are often exposed to extreme weather conditions. This study investigates the impact of temperature and solar radiation on the performance of a PV array, focusing on key characteristics such as open-circuit voltage (VOC), short-circuit current (ISC), and maximum power (PMAX). Using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations, the study analyses these characteristics under varying temperatures (5°C to 45°C) and radiation levels (200 W/m² to 1200 W/m²). Results indicate that VOC increases with higher irradiance but decreases with higher temperatures. ISC increases with both higher radiation and temperature, while PMAX is optimized at high irradiance and low temperatures. The impulse withstand voltage (Vimp), a critical factor for PV system reliability, is assessed according to the PD CLC/TS 50539-12 standard. Findings reveal that at low temperatures and high radiation, the Vimp requirement is highest, emphasizing the need for robust voltage protection in PV systems. These insights underscore the importance of considering local climate conditions and implementing effective thermal management to enhance the performance and reliability of PV systems.

A new approach for estimating insulation condition of field transformers using FRA

Frequency response analysis (FRA) is a tool for evaluating mechanical integrity of transformer's core and winding. However, several studies have reported that FRA is also sensitive to other parameters such as temperature, moisture content and presence of oil. Since some of these parameters are critical in the insulation degradation process, it is interesting to further investigate the possibility of using FRA for insulation assessment. In this paper, the insulation conditions of three field transformers are investigated using FRA. This is performed after statistical analysis on the response suggested no mechanical damage on the transformers. The responses are further analyzed to determine the percentage of change of winding capacitance. This is achieved by comparing resonance frequencies between the responses. The percentage of change represents the amount of degradation in the insulation. This is because as the insulation condition degrades, the response is shifted towards lower frequencies. This new investigation demonstrates the applicability of FRA to estimate the insulation degradation.
