Control of a multi-functional grid-connected solar PV system using instantaneous reactive power (PQ) theory for current harmonic alleviations

In recent years, the advance usages of non-linear loads have led to the serious power quality problem in the distribution system. Non-linear load will inject the current harmonics and cause power quality problem at Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This problem can be improved by using power filter. Power filter can be divided into passive power filter and active power filter. Passive filter is an appropriate solution to solve power quality problem in term of harmonic mitigation due to a simple circuit, low cost and less energy requirement. However, active power filter (APF) is more suitable due to better performance to solve power quality problem for current harmonics issue. This paper focuses in designing the application of a multi-functional grid-connected solar PV system integrated with DSTATCOM by using Instantaneous Reactive Power (PQ) theory controller to mitigate the current harmonics injected by non-linear load at the distribution system. MATLAB/SIMULINK software is used to simulate the performance of the multi-functional GCPV based SAPF according to IEEE Standard 519:2014 which THD of the line current at the Pont of Common Coupling (PCC) should be less than 8%.

Comparative Study of Control Methods for a 2MW Doubly-Fed Induction Generator Wind Turbine

This paper presents a comparative study of two control methods for a 2MW DoublyFed Induction Generator Wind Turbine (DFIG-WT) using MATLAB Simulink. The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) control methods were implemented and evaluated in terms of their ability to track reference signals, disturbances tolerance and stabilize the system under uncertain wind conditions. The performance of the control methods was assessed using a high-fidelity WT model that incorporates the dynamics of the wind turbine, the wind speed, and the control system. The results show that the MPC control method outperform the PID control method in terms of tracking accuracy and disturbance tolerance.

Design A Giant Battery Energy Storage for Port Application

Most of the seaports are toward green technology with a focus on renewable energy and energy storage to reduce emissions that will affect the environment and health of people living near the place. This is due to the main port's activity as a hub for connecting to other places and also trade. However, the load consumption at the seaport is high at an average of around 1,581 kW per day depending on the application. This paper presents the method to design a giant battery for energy storage to reduce diesel and grid supply used. Therefore, to purpose this the mathematical model was developed by using the generic battery of lithium-ion type based on the Shepherd model. Generic battery models are available in MATLAB/Simulink library. In particular, this study investigates how voltage and state of charge can be determined with sufficient accuracy for a given load profile. Thus, the giant battery simulation model was developed based on the mathematical model. Finally, the giant battery model is included in MATLAB/Simulink simulation, and the procedure of determining the model parameters is discussed in detail. The results show that the model can accurately represent the dynamic behavior of the battery and is assumed to operate at a maximum SOC of 80%, with a total capacity is 126500 Ah. 20% to 80% of SOC is the safe limit for the battery to operate. Besides that, the return on investment (ROI) cost also considers in this paper.

Power controller for dual-axis solar tracking system using PID

Solar energy is one of the rich and unlimited energy sources in Malaysia which can generate power instead of the burning of fossil fuels which can cause air pollution. In this study, a dual-axis solar tracking system is proposed to improve the harvested power. To encourage the maximum output power is produced, PID controller is used. Its function is to achieve the reference power where the angle of the horizontal and vertical axes is considered. The solar radiation is studied from 7 a.m. (0700) to 5 p.m. (1700) according to the habit of solar altitude angle and the azimuth angle in Perlis, Malaysia. There is two PID controllers are developed for the orientation and inclination axis of the solar tracker. The output power between the dual-axis and single-axis of solar tracking system are compared through the simulation in MATLAB Simulink. In conclusion, the dual-axis solar tracker has a better performance than the single-axis solar tracker due to the higher degree of freedom to follow the motion of sun. This maximum power can keep going to the reference power of the photovoltaic module during the greatest radiation of sun depending on the solar altitude and azimuth angle.

Fault Detection Analysis for Three Phase Induction Motor Drive System using Neural Network

One of the most important components of the industrial process is known to be the three-phase induction motor. This device, however, is prone to electrical and mechanical faults, which may cause a substantial component or financial losses. The fault analysis received growing attention due to a need to increase reliability and to decrease potential output loss due to machine breakdown. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present a simple and reliable fault analysis based on the Neural Network (NN) is proposed. The NN method is a simpler approach without a diagnostic professional to review data and diagnose issues. Various fault disputes of induction motor are developed and analysed using the NN method. The main types of faults considered are over-voltage, under-voltage, and unbalanced voltage faults. The trained network is tested with simulated fault current and voltage data.

Investigation of MPC performance for wind turbine system during wind speed uncertainty

Real-time implementation for wind turbines (WTs) needs a controller that could explicitly formulate the system constraints and uncertainty in the design process to avoid undesired behavior or breakdown. Model-Predictive-Control (MPC) approach will be used in this research due to its ability to cover actuator and state constraints as well as multivariable control in a more convenient way. To investigate the impact of ad-hoc constraints and wind speed uncertainties, the MPC controller will first be developed. This paper will observe the effect on wind turbines (WT) during uncertainty happen. Multiple uncertainties are simulated to investigate the behavior of the wind turbine system. The simulation results using MATLAB Simulink output are expected to indicate that the MPC controller can ensure the system stability to meet the desired output while satisfying all of the constraints. During the presence of uncertainty, it shows that the MPC controller takes time to stabilize the system.

A Potential Controller for Smart Electrical Energy Management System

Integrated energy utilization has been recognized as a productive way towards better energy management, besides increasing Renewable Energy (RE) penetration. Thus, the combination of RE integrated with the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been recognized as the primary solution where it is necessary to have a controller to interface the system efficiently. Hence, a smart electrical energy management system controller is designed and developed based on load leveling and peak shaving applications for real-time AC power management in this work. The main function of the controller is to continuously monitor and maintain the load demand and to produce a leveled or shaved load profile that will be seen at the grid network by controlling the battery operation. The testing results concluded that the controller able to perform both the energy applications. Overall, a dual function controller based on energy applications to maintain consumer load demand usage more securely and reliably, so that the utility bill is reduced and the battery lifetime is prolonged simultaneously is achieved in this work.

Feasibility Study of Future Seaports

Port is a focal point especially in the trade sector, where it is represented as hub for the import and export from one destination to another. Despite the fact that it gives positive impact to country specifically in economic sector but from the health sector, this activity leaves a negative impact on the environment and human health, especially those living near the port. Now, most of developed countries have made improvements by converting conventional engines (diesel engines) to electrical engines for major vehicles in ports. The same goes for shore-side ports, most of them using cold ironing (CI). However, all the modification is still raw and faced several challenges, especially in technical aspects such as voltage difference, frequency, supply / demand. It occurs due to the difference in standard voltage and frequency between shore-side and ship. Most of the ocean ship used 60 Hz. In addition, the main constraint faced is that the power supplied on the shore-side is not enough to meet the demand from customers. Thus, to make additions to the existing substation, it will require high initial costs. After evaluating the pros and cons, the new approach is taken to integrate this system into microgrid technology. Microgrid technology is a local cluster energy source with a control capability comprising Energy Distribution Resources (DER), which cover management request, storage, and loads. One of the advantages of a microgrid is that they can be connected or disconnected from the grid to operate autonomously.

Design and Performance Analysis of Grid Connected Photovoltaic (GCPV) based DSTATCOM for Power Quality Improvements

Solar energy has become the most prominent renewable energy for electrical power generation of the sustainable development agenda. This project focuses on power quality improvement in the low voltage distribution network by using a three-phase three-wire Distributed Static compensator (DSTATCOM) supplied by a single-stage grid-connected solar photovoltaic (GCPV) system. The instantaneous reactive power theory (IRPT) or P-Q theory will be used as the control algorithm of the PV based DSTATCOM to eliminate the harmonic current caused by the non-linear loads in the distribution system. This control method has great impact on the accuracy of the harmonic current and reactive power compensation for harmonic current elimination according to the requirement of THD limit set by IEEE 519-2014. Sizing of the grid-connected solar PV system based DSTATCOM will be presented and capable to deliver the active power demand to the utility grid under variation of solar irradiances. This system is modelled and simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Performance of a Single-phase Grid-integrated Photovoltaic based DSTATCOM using Modified p-q Theory Control Algorithm.

This paper investigates the performance of a single-phase grid-integrated photovoltaic based DSTATCOM by using modified p-q theory control algorithm. Previously, p-q theory controller has been employed for a three-phase DSTATCOM system. Thus, this paper employs a modified p-q theory control algorithm for a single-phase grid-integrated solar PV (GCPV) based DSTATCOM. Thus, the GCPV system has improved with DSTATCOM capabilities such as harmonic reduction for a single-phase distribution system under varying solar irradiances. The simulation results have been obtained by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software in accordance with IEEE Standard 519:2014, which stated that the THD should be less than 8% for the line current at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The performance of the single-phase GCPV based DSTATCOM has been analysed for dynamic and steady-state conditions under varying solar irradiances.
