3D Numerical modelling on the thermal performance of reinforced concrete encased wide-flanged steel column

This paper presents the development and verification of a three-dimensional (3D) numerical modelling to predict the thermal performance of reinforced concrete encased wide-flanged steel (RCEWFS) column. The numerical model was developed using finite element software, ABAQUS. Then, the verified model was used to determine the suitable value for heat transfer conductance, time step and mesh size that provide the most reliable prediction against the experimental results. The parametric studies were also conducted to study the effect of rising time of fire exposure, section size, and flange width of I-section on the thermal performance of the RCEWFS column. From this study, it can be concluded that the predictions by the 3D numerical model are reliable and accurate. The study on the contour of the model shows that the thermal behaviour of concrete is non-linear

Properties of self-compacting concrete containing palm oil fuel ash and rice husk ash

Palm fuel ash (POFA) and rice husk ash (RHA) are usually disposed to open areas and landfills without treatment, resulting in environmental problems. Both materials fulfilled the criteria as pozzolanic material, thus can be used as substitutes to cement. This paper presents the comparison of fresh and hardened properties between self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing POFA and RHA. The SCC mixtures were produced based on water/binder ratio of 0.6. Both POFA and RHA were introduced in concrete replacing 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% of cement by weight. The fresh SCC was tested for three (3) fresh properties including filling ability, passing ability and segregation resistance. Meanwhile, the hardened properties of concrete were tested for its compressive strength. The fresh properties of SCC incorporating POFA and RHA fulfilled all the requirements of SCC which include the filling ability, passing ability and segregation resistance. Meanwhile, SCC containing RHA had higher compressive strength than the SCC containing POFA for all different replacement level. This is because RHA had higher SiO2 content than POFA, thus promote more pozzolanic reaction to improve the strength of concrete. Furthermore, the optimum replacement level of POFA and RHA in SCC were 10% and 20%, respectively. However, the compressive strength of both SCC containing POFA and RHA were still lower than the control SCC. It is suggested that the SCC containing POFA and RHA to be cured for longer period to achieve better or equivalent strength to the control SCC.

Mechanical and rheological properties of concrete with ceramic tile waste as partial replacement of fine aggregate

The rapidly increasing in population has led to the higher of construction, repairing and renovation activity that lead to produce large amount of construction material waste. The disposal of broken ceramic tiles during construction is one of the factors which contribute to this matter and can lead to land pollution. On the other hand, the natural resource in construction such as fine aggregate also facing depletion in order to cater the current and future demand. Therefore, this paper explores the properties of concrete with ceramic tile waste used as a partial replacement for fine aggregate. About 45 cube samples, 30 prism samples and 15 control samples were casted. Various percentage of ceramic tile waste has been introduced as partial replacement for fine aggregate with proportion of 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%. Tests for mechanical and rheological properties which have been done to identify the concrete performance are compressive strength, flexural, water absorption and slump test. From the results obtained, the sample of concrete contain of 15% ceramic tile waste as fine aggregate replacement has reached the optimum strength in both compressive strength and flexural strength. However, by using 20% of ceramic tile waste as fine aggregate replacement does show higher workability and water absorption.

Improving sustainability of road construction by partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with crushed brick and reclaimed asphalt pavement

Reducing dependent on naturally sourced materials is among the priority in improving the sustainability of road construction. The subbase layer which provides strength and stability across the road profile, comprised mainly of natural aggregates. This study aims to explore the feasibility of partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with 20% Crushed Brick (CB) and 20 to 50% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test and Constant Head Permeability tests were carried out to determine the effect of this partial replacement on the geotechnical properties of the subbase layer. The results obtained denotes that the combination of 20% CB and 50% RAP is the optimum partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with CB and RAP. The use of CB further complements RAP in improving the stiffness and compressibility of the subbase layer while contributing significantly toward sustainability in road construction.

Analysis of Thermal Comfort Among Workshop Users: At TVET Technical Institution

Thermal comfort is a part of indoor environmental quality that should be considered to ensure the occupants' well-being. Unconducive buildings not only bring occupants discomfort but also tend to affect health, disrupt the process of teaching and learning, and reduce work productivity. Thus, this study determines the thermal condition of existing workshop buildings used in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) implementation. ASHRAE Standard 55 (2017) is referred to in the determination of thermal comfort involving objective measurements and subjective measurements. Observation methods of environmental variables such as air temperature, radiant temperature, air velocity, relative humidity is observed. Evaluations of comfort are based on occupant surveys and environmental measurements. A total of 257 people completed a questionnaire distributed at three technical institutions in Kedah, Malaysia. According to the findings, the average thermal sensation vote is 1.85, which leads to 66.5% of respondents feeling discomfort. Meanwhile, the adaptive model analysis showed that the workshop environmental conditions were out of the comfort zone and did not comply with the ASHRAE 55 standard. Hence, the thermal discomfort factors from the occupants' perspective were identified and widely discussed. As a result, the research findings will benefit parties involved in new building construction or existing building renovations to improve indoor air quality.
