A Deep Learning Approach for Face Detection and Recognition to Initiate Human-Robot Conversation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently booming at almost all field. The inauguration of OpenAI ChatGPT using Natural Language Processing (NLP) has played a vital role in exposing AI to the public. It is estimated about 1.8 billion users visit ChatGPT site in a month, with further planning of apps creation in iTunes Apple App Store and Android Google Playstore. Therefore, it is interesting and natural to implement such technology in robotic field. This paper presents the attempt to employ AI into the mobile robot system towards the main goals of conversational intelligence between human and robot. First, the robot head is designed and assembled, then a screen that functioned as the robot face is attached. Afterwards the detection and recognition system were developed giving the ability to the robot to recognize registered persons and the robot eye is able to track where the person is, in the camera Field-of-View (FOV). In addition, all these systems are developed on in-situ device i.e. NVIDIA® JetsonTM Nano. It is targeted that the proposed system is able to initiate a natural conversation between a robot and a human user.

Indoor automated fire extinguisher system using computer vision

This paper presents the development of an automated fire extinguisher robot by employing fire recognition using computer vision. This project aims to develop a robot that can search, detect and extinguish small flames for indoor purposes. The robot is developed by applying open-source image processing to recognize the presence of fire. A control program was built to control the movement of the robot’s servo motor. The performance of the fire recognition was analysed in different light intensities and angles. The development of this project makes use of a camera and computer vision in place of various sensors, such as gas sensors, temperature sensors, and infrared sensors, to detect fires. Furthermore, a microprocessor is employed to operate the water pump and servo motor, which drive the nozzle to the position specified by the microcontroller. The results reveal that the proposed vision-based fire detection system has a high classification accuracy correspond to fire recognition.

Design of electroadhesion pad for improving grasping friction of soft robotic glove

A soft wearable robotic glove was developed to provide grasping assistance to patients with neuromuscular impairment. Sufficient friction forces is required in grasping objects as lack of friction between the glove and the surface of the object will result in slippage. In this paper, the application of electroadhesion in order to increase the frictional force for wearable robotic gloves is presented. The characteristics of the proposed electroadhesion pad is lightweight, thin, and easy to be operated by the patients. The work involves designing and fabricating soft electroadhesive pad and embedding them to the robotic glove. The electroadhesion pad was supplied with voltage lower than 400V for safety purposes. Experimental results verified that the proposed design of electroadhesion pad can increase the friction force when grasping various objects. Experimental results shows that the higher the contact area of electroadhesion applied, the higher the resulted frictional forces. Moreover, it can be noted that higher contact area of electroadhesion requires a higher voltage input to produce electroadhesive force.
