Ethnomedicinal wonders – A compendium of tropical home garden plants

This book is an introduction to a collection of plants that would normally be found in a traditional tropical home garden. It is not exhaustive but it is our small contribution to the bio-informatics of the richness of the local biodiversity. The ultimate functional objective of a traditional home garden is the provision of food beyond the fourth dimension. We call it the green kitchen cabinet and the life medicine chest. These various types of plants and their unique ingredients derived from their parts are traditionally used for food preparation be it as regular meals or for specific concoction for wellness purpose or curing of illnesses. The wonders of these functional ingredients in these plants, or the bioactive compounds in terms of flavonoids, phenolics, antioxidants, anthocyanin, and the various secondary metabolites are currently being substantiated with scientific evidence.

Antifungal Activity of Essential Oil Extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia Against Pathogenic Fungi on Mango (Mangifera Indica L.) for Mango Postharvest Application

An infection by pathogenic fungi is one of the major problems in post-harvest stage of mangoes. Therefore, the extraction of essential oil from Melaleuca alternifolia is being tested as a natural fungicide for controlling fungus infections of selected mangoes locally known as susu mango. The extraction was performed using Solvent-Free Microwave Assisted Extraction with a yield of 0.57% concentration. The inhibitory effect of this essential oil against isolated fungi from mango was investigated through in-vitro and in-vivo analyses. Distilled water was used as a negative control while chemical fungicide (Globus 5.5) was used as a positive control in the analyses. The mycelial growth inhibition of the extracted essential oil for poisoned food test and disc diffusion method showed 62.50 ± 0.49% and 59.70 ± 0.30%, respectively, for in-vivo experiment which used unwounded and artificially wounded mangoes. The result also demonstrated that the essential oil applied on the mangoes could decrease the disease incidence from 100% to 61.33% for up to 10 days incubation at room temperature compared to that of the control. Hence, the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia can act as a green fungicide and is also a promising alternative to the synthetic chemical fungicide for controlling post-harvest disease on mangoes.

Antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of sesbania grandiflora extract

Xanthine oxidase is a crucial enzyme in the regulation of uric acid, with elevated levels leading to gout and hyperuricemia. To combat these conditions, a synergistic approach using antioxidants and xanthine oxidase inhibitors presents a promising treatment strategy. Given the side effects of synthetic inhibitors, this study explores the natural xanthine oxidase inhibitory and antioxidant properties of Sesbania grandiflora leaves extract. The analysis revealed a significant free radical inhibition rate of 61.59 ± 0.90% at a concentration of 100 μg/mL. The SC₅₀ value for the leaves extract was 16.59 ± 0.67 μg/mL, compared to 7.76 ± 0.23 μg/mL for gallic acid, a positive control. The leaves extract also demonstrated notable efficiency in inhibiting uric acid formation, with an IC₅₀ value of 0.36 ± 0.341 μg/mL, although this was higher than the 0.01 ± 0.005 μg/mL value for allopurinol. A strong correlation (r = 0.9958) was found between the antioxidant activity and xanthine oxidase inhibition of the extract, underscoring its effectiveness. This study is the first to report the combined effects of xanthine oxidase inhibition and antioxidant activity in Sesbania grandiflora, highlighting its potential as a natural treatment for gout and related diseases.

Harnessing oregano nanoemulsion: a novel solution to combat curvalaria-induced fruit rot and preserve mango quality

Mango is a significant global fruit crop, producing over 1,000 million tonnes annually. However, postharvest losses due to pathogenic fungal infections are considerable, exacerbated by the continuous use of synthetic fungicides, which pose risks of fungal resistance and environmental harm. This study assessed the effectiveness of Origanum vulgare-based nanoemulsion against mango postharvest diseases and quality preservation. Results indicate that the O. vulgare nanoemulsion (Ore-S1-15) exhibited optimal properties, including small droplet size, low polydispersity, and stable pH. FTIR analysis identified key functional groups, while GC-MS results revealed prominent components with isopropyl myristate being the major constituent at 42.41%, followed by isopropyl palmitate (25.53%), oleic acid (4.57%), diethyl phthalate (3.84%), estagole (2.09%), 2-(phenylmethylene)-octanal (1.17%), cyclopentane acetic acid (0.85%), benzoic acid (0.34%), and coumarin (0.26%) as minor constituents. In vitro test of the Ore-S1-15 nanoemulsion against Curvularia sp. demonstrated significant antifungal activity, with 79.51 ± 0.95% conidia inhibition. Additionally, in vivo test showed a reduction in disease incidence on wounded mangoes. The Ore-S1-15 nanoemulsion enhanced quality parameters by delaying colour changes, reducing weight loss and steadily maintaining the total soluble solids. Thus, Ore-S1-15 nanoemulsion emerges as a promising and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling mango postharvest diseases and increasing shelf life while preserving quality.

Development of aquaculture water quality real-time monitoring using multi-sensory system and internet of things

Water quality is an important parameter for the health and growth of aquatic species in aquaculture farming system. The threshold values of the water main parameters should be monitored continuously. Contaminated aquaculture water will affect the health, growth and ability of animals to survive. In addition, it will also affect the harvesting yields based on the number and size of the animals. To overcome this problem, the main water parameters, namely temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Electrical Conductivity are monitored in real-time using a multi-sensory system and the internet of things. Data is acquired by a developed instrument and transmitted wirelessly via a GPRS/GSM module to a web server database. The data obtained are analyzed and monitored through the website and in real-time. Therefore, corrective action could be taken immediately for contaminated water, indicated by water parameters out of range. The system also provides an early signal to farmers based on a specific range of water quality parameters values. This will help farmers make adjustments to ensure appropriate water quality for the aquaculture system.

Deep eutectic solvent for extraction of natural antioxidant from a medicinal plant, Coleus aromaticus

Antioxidant is a basic requirement for maintaining good health. In this research, natural antioxidant was extracted from C. aromaticus by using different types of synthesized deep eutectic solvents (DES). The extracts were analysed using total phenolic content assay and DPPH radical scavenging assay. Finally, HPLC and FTIR methods were employed to check the present of target compounds. From the result obtained, the best DES was ChCl : glycerol with a ratio of 1:4 bearing 97.25 µg/ml of total phenolic content. The bioactive compounds that were successfully identified through HPLC and FTIR assays were Rosmarinic acid, Caffeic acid, Gallic acid and Quercetin. This shows DES is a potential green solvent to extract bioactive compounds present in medicinal plants.

Exploring antioxidant and antidiabetic potential of Mutingia calabura (Kerukupsiam) leaf extract: In vitro analysis and molecular docking study

Antioxidant activity and antihyperglycemic constituents and of traditional medicinal plants are currently the preferred therapeutic means of treatment and management of diabetes because of the undesired adverse effect of synthetic drugs. Muntingia calabura (Kerukupsiam) leaves and other parts are considered as alternative natural sources of treatment for diabetes. Ultrasonic assisted extraction is a novel approach for extraction of phytoconstituents which gives high extraction yield of bioactive compounds. However, there has been no published information presently on the use of ethanol ultrasonic assisted extraction method for assessment of antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of M. calabura leaves. Hence, the current study aims to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of M. calabura leave extract. IC50 analysis was done to determine theinhibitory concentration and the results obtained from 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay showed IC50 of gallic acid to be 1.0 µg/ml, which is lower than M. calabura leaves extract at 2.54 µg/ml, indicating that only small concentration of gallic acid was required to inhibit the free radicals at 50 %. However, IC50 analysis for amylase inhibition showed that M. calabura extract had 44.39 µg/ml antidiabetic activity compared to acarbose with 57.1 µg/ml activity. This indicates that M. calabura leaves extract has a better inhibition on amylase activity compared to the acarbose which is a synthetic drug. Further still, in silico study was carried out and the molecular docking result of eight ligands against amylase indicates quercetin had the least binding free energy of −9.1 kcal/mol, indicating the strongest interaction. Using Lineweaver-Burk plot, the results showed a competitive inhibition, hence, it was justified that M. calabura has the potential to manage diabetes and other diseases related to free radicals.
