A UDP-TRIZ method as a universal design approach for product design

To encourage the participation of individuals with diverse abilities in the community, universal design has been adopted as the foundation for creating user-friendly designs that include people of all ages, the disabled, and the elderly. However, the approach to universal design lacks a systematic and directed strategy for designers to ensure that their designs fit universal design requirements. Most manuals and guidelines focus on the built environment, and there is no specific guidance for product design. This situation is seen as an opportunity to introduce an approach for designers to approach universal designs effectively. Therefore, this research proposes an intervention tool for universal design. Universal design principles and TRIZ 40 creative principles are synergised and used in the design process to benefit one another mutually. A UDP - TRIZ methodology framework is introduced to a group of designers engaged in a series of design activities to create a product with a universal design for visually impaired persons in mind. This study demonstrates that this strategy can assist designers in understanding user-related problems, identifying innovations, justifying designs in terms of universal design requirements, and fostering the creative process.

The effect of silica toward polymer membrane for water separation process

The aim of this present work was to investigate the effect of different percentage rice husk silica (RHS) particles composition towards polymer mixed matrix membrane microstructure and performance in water separation process. The polymer membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method using polysulfone (PSf), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent, distilled water as non-solvent and fixed RHS at 400°C as an additive. The microstructures of PSf/PEG/RHS sample were characterized by performing scanning electron microscope (SEM). The performance was measured by using pure water flux and humic acid for the rejection test. The analyzed result of SEM analysis revealed that the addition of RHS obviously improved the microstructure of the membrane especially at the top and sub layer at the range of 1 until 3 wt. %. This was proven by the pure water flux (PWF) value measured from 114.47 LMH to 154.04 LMH and rejection from value 83% to 96% at this specified range substantially higher than the mixed matrix membrane with synthetic silica. In fact, the presence of RHS particles not only improved the properties and performance of membrane but also possess biodegradable properties which can minimize the pollution and provide a membrane green technology system.

Enhancing Quality Control in Automotive Reconditioning : A Case Study of Carsome Certified Lab

This study examines quality control (QC) practices at Carsome Certified Lab (CCL), focusing on the reconditioning of pre-owned vehicles. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates analysis of internal QC records, interviews with CCL staff, and customer satisfaction surveys. Findings highlight significant inconsistencies, especially in aesthetic evaluations, with about 30% of vehicles requiring rework due to initially missed defects. Customer surveys indicate a high overall satisfaction rate (75%), yet 20% report dissatisfaction linked primarily to aesthetic issues. Statistical analysis reveals a strong correlation (p < 0.05) between the thoroughness of QC checks and customer satisfaction levels. The study advocates for more rigorous, standardized QC protocols and the adoption of advanced technologies (digital tools, artificial intelligence, imaging technologies, etc.) to improve evaluation precision and consistency. These enhancements are projected to boost customer satisfaction and operational efficiency, serving as a model for similar reconditioning facilities and contributing to industry-wide standards improvement.

Conceptual design and computational analysis of traditional boat passenger seat

Todays, there are various of optimisation methods that have been studied by many researchers in order to find the appropriate combination of processing parameters setting in the injection moulding process. From the previous literatures, the optimisation works have been proven will improve the moulded part quality. In this study, the application of optimisation work to improve warpage of front panel housing has been explored. By selecting cooling time, coolant temperature, packing pressure and melt temperature as the variable parameters, design of experiment (DOE) have been constructed by using the rotatable central composite design (CCD) approach. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was performed in order to define the optimal processing parameters setting which will optimise the warpage condition. Based on the results, melt temperature is the most significant factor contribute to the warpage condition and warpage have optimised by 47.1% after optimisation. The findings show that the application of optimisation work offers the best quality of moulded part produced.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of Varied Cross-Sectional Areas in Sleep Apnea Individuals across Diverse Situations

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common medical condition that impacts a significant portion of the population. To better understand this condition, research has been conducted on inhaling and exhaling breathing airflow parameters in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. A steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach and an SST turbulence model have been utilized to simulate the upper airway airflow. A 3D airway model has been created using advanced software such as the Materialize Interactive Medical Image Control System (MIMICS) and ANSYS. The aim of the research was to fill this gap by conducting a detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to investigate the influence of cross-sectional areas on airflow characteristics during inhale and exhale breathing in OSA patients. The lack of detailed understanding of how the cross-sectional area of the airways affects OSA patients and the airflow dynamics in the upper airway is the primary problem addressed by this research. The simulations revealed that the cross-sectional area of the airway has a notable impact on velocity, Reynolds number, and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). TKE, which measures turbulence flow in different breathing scenarios among patients, could potentially be utilized to assess the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This research found a vital correlation between maximum pharyngeal turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and cross-sectional areas in OSA patients, with a variance of 29.47%. Reduced cross-sectional area may result in a significant TKE rise of roughly 10.28% during inspiration and 10.18% during expiration.

Feasibility study of FDM 3D printing fabrication process for customized automotive front grille

In recent years, many automakers starting to adopt 3D printing technologies in producing functional end parts. In line with the industrial revolution (IR4.0), this technology plays a significant role in improving the component's cost efficiency, especially in the low volume market. Nevertheless, these technologies facing several challenges such as surface quality and dimensional accuracy that hinder their progress. A feasibility study was conducted to investigate the influence of process parameters on the surface finish and dimensional accuracy when producing automotive component. The automotive front grille component has been chosen as a case study, and Full factorial design (FFF) optimisation approach was employed to the part fabricated by FDM 3D Printing technology to improve the surface finish dimensional accuracy of the parts. Based on the results, layer height and infill percentage are the most significant factors in the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the 3D printed part. Findings from this research show that process parameters optimisation improves dimensional accuracy, but post-processing is still required to enhance the part's surface finish.

Chemical coating techniques to enhance the surface quality of 3D printing (FDM) part: A short review

The staircase effect describes the overall print surface roughness indicated through the layer by layer of Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), also known as the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) process. Due to the poor surface finish, post-processing can improve the aesthetic effect. The different post-processing procedures for FDM parts are classified as material removal and material addition. This paper reviews four types of material addition methods based on chemical coating post-processing techniques; gap filling, coating spray, plating, and water transfer printing of based on production time, cost and related environmental issues. From the review, spray coating generally is cost-effective and less hazardous to the environment. The paper presents a benchmark between the available material addition techniques as a post-processing step for the FDM printed parts.

Universal Design is a fundamentals of good design. A product with Universal Design approach should provide wide range of solution for people with different purposes including those with diverse disabilities. However, designers often based on a subjective understanding of Universal Design Principles (UDP) to formulate design solutions. This result in the inaccurate conversion of design needs. A systematic approach is needed in order to develop a concept to meet the customer need. Previous studies shown potential integration of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) proposed to create a systematic approach for problem-solving requires creativity abilities. The purpose of this study is to explore the construction of the integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles. To construct the integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles, this study will use focus group discussion of certified TRIZ experts in the exploration of establishing an integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles. The further discussion onto the elements required to create the integration model by the TRIZ experts will be taken into consideration to construct a final model UDP-TRIZ model. Finally, the results are expected to lead towards a final integration model of the UDP and TRIZ integration model.
