Illocutionary acts in zahid hamidi's pau 2017 and 2018 speeches

Studies on political speeches are not new and cover various aspects including that of language use. Political speeches are a medium through which ideas and ideologies are communicated through language use for the sake of the listener’s understanding. The success of delivering a political speech depends on the use of persuasive arguments. This study presents an analysis of the use of speech acts as an effective argumentative strategy. Its two objectives are to compare the use of speech acts in two different situations, and to explain the results obtained from the comparison. The data of the study comprise two keynote addresses by Zahid Hamidi. The first is the keynote at the 2017 UMNO General Assembly before the 14th General Election (PRU14) in 2017, and the second is his keynote address at the 2018 UMNO General Assembly, after the party's defeat in PRU14. The analysis used qualitative method, adopting Bach and Harnish's (1979) theoretical framework. Overall findings show Zahid Hamidi used constatives, directives, commissives and acknowledgements in his speeches. Constatives and directives were specifically utilised to influence and convince the audience of his arguments more in his 2017 speech than in the 2018 one. After PRU14, Zahid used more of commissives and acknowledgments. Commissives stand at 10.3% in the 2018 speech, compared to 4.5% in 2017 and acknowledgements is at 9.3% in 2018 compared to 5.4% in 2017. The change in use of the speech acts across the two years suggests that Zahid has had to adjust his use of words and language to fit in with the 2018 socio-political scenario. The results show that socio-political scenario clearly has an impact on the type of speech acts used in politicians’ speeches. The findings also send a message to politicians that their speeches should contain speech acts appropriate to the current scenario, which can be understood clearly by their supporters.

Understanding green technology from Malaysian online news

Malaysia's commitment to a green Malaysia is unquestionable, particularly with the inception of the National Green Technology Policy a decade ago. One of the key objectives of the policy is raising the awareness of, and educating the general public on green technology since their understanding of it will influence how they receive relevant initiatives. This study, therefore, explores how green technology is portrayed in online news as it is a source of information on the subject. We asked what messages are projected, and particularly if the idea of collaborative efforts required for the success of green technology initiatives is reflected in the news. A scrutiny of 35 news pieces yielded from an internet search suggests that there is low public interest on green technology. The message conveyed to the public is that green technology is commonly the "job"of the government, with very little relevance to the individual. While notions of collaboration between key players are relayed through the news, the scarcity of reporting on the role of academia is of concern.

Faedah RPGS tabletop sebagai alat pengajaran dan pembelajaran

Permainan perwatakan atas meja (TTRPG) ialah permainan yang berpotensi menjadi alat pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang berharga. TTRPG ialah permainan naratif berstruktur yang membolehkan sekumpulan pemain terlibat dalam penceritaan kolaboratif untuk membina cerita semasa mereka bermain. Ramai yang terlepas pandang potensinya dalam bidang pendidikan kerana ia merupakan hobi khusus. Disebabkan ini, terdapat kurang penyelidikan TTRPG dalam bidang akademik. Makalah ini akan menerangkan apakah itu TTRPG dan contoh jenis permainan yang terdapat di pasaran. Ia juga akan menggambarkan bagaimana permainan itu boleh memberi manfaat kepada pelajar, apakah kemahiran yang boleh diajar dengan berkesan menggunakan permainan itu, dan cara ia membantu pelajar melibatkan diri dengan bahan pembelajaran. Ini adalah berdasarkan kertas kerja dan artikel dan pengalaman mengajar bilik darjah saya sendiri menggunakan TTRPG, yang telah mendorong saya untuk meneruskannya sebagai topik penyelidikan. Akhir sekali, kertas ini akan memberi cadangan mengenai aktiviti masa depan untuk penyelidikan lanjutan dalam topik TTRPG.

Kajian bagi menyelaraskan ujian penulisan kepada Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

Secara umumnya, proses menyelaraskan penilaian bahasa Inggeris kepada piawaian antarabangsa, seperti Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) dapat mengukuhkan kesahihan ujian yang dibangunkan. Kertas kerja ini adalah bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana skala CEFR dapat dioperasikan dalam pembangunan ujian penulisan kepada pelajar antarabangsa bagi saringan tahap penguasaan Bahasa Inggeris pelajar antarabangsa untuk kemasukan ke universiti. Pada beberapa peringkat pembangunan ujian berasaskan CEFR ini, proses untuk menghubungkan ujian penulisan dengan CEFR telah dikaji. Di awal pembangunan item ujian, penggubal item ujian mengenalpasti tahap keperluan minimum penguasaan pelajar berdasarkan skala CEFR yang ingin diukur. Seterusnya proses pembinaan item ujian dan proses semakan aras kesukaran item dijalankan. Skala pemarkahan kemudiaannya disemak untuk mengenalpasti kriteria yang dinilai dan julat markah bagi setiap skala CEFR ditentukan. Setelah ujian dijalankan kepada pelajar antarabangsa, sampel markah pelajar dinilai dan markah bagi sampel diselaraskan berdasarkan rubrik skala CEFR. Akhirnya, nilai tahap persetujuan yang tinggi di antara pemeriksa ujian penulisan digunakan untuk meningkatkan kesahihan pelaporan markah pelajar berdasarkan kepada skala CEFR. Kajian masa hadapan dapat dilaksanakan kepada proses penyelarasan ujian berasaskan CEFR kepada kemahiran mendengar, bercakap dan juga membaca bagi mendapatkan keputusan tahap penguasaaan bahasa Inggeris pelajar yang lebih menyeluruh.

The analysis of course and teaching evaluation for language classes during COVID-19 pandemic

The need for educational innovation to train educators to teach online is becoming more critical as online learning in higher education has increasingly grown over the past decade. Some researchers have suggested that teachers need a radical shift in their approach to teaching as they move from traditional to online classrooms. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected students and lecturers in higher education institutions, as well as teaching-learning processes, leading to the inevitable acceptance and implementation of online teaching and learning. Coping with online teaching challenges provides an opportunity for the lecturers to work as a team in empowering each other to deliver lessons online. In this study, four key considerations of online teaching and learning which are learning tools, pedagogy, assistance for learners and administration (CoL, 2020) were used as a guideline in designing the course content for, and delivery of Preparatory English course. This paper will discuss the students’ overall course evaluation and teaching evaluation of two lecturers who taught the course. One hundred sixteen engineering and technology students participated in this study between Week 1 to Week 6 (face to face classes) and Week 7 to Week 14 (online classes). A quantitative method was used to assess the lecturers’ teaching performance, based on students’ course and teaching evaluation. The study revealed the success of the course delivery and teaching evaluation with students’ rating of the two at 93.9% and 94.5% respectively. The study supports Vygotsky’s social constructivism theory which claims that a person has not only a set of abilities but also a set of potential skills that can be realised if given the proper guidance from others. The results of this study help us to understand that a proper key considerations of online learning have played positive impact towards students’ evaluation results.

Translating metaphors in political speeches from English to Arabic: strategies and procedures

This study investigates the metaphors’ translation from English to Arabic in political speeches, with the aim of identifying the metaphor translation procedures employed. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzed the translation of 82 English source language (SL) metaphors into Arabic target language (TL), employing Newmark's Metaphor Translation Procedures as a framework. The findings reveal that while certain SL metaphors have direct equivalents in Arabic, the Arabic translator introduced two new variants or procedures (H1 and H2). Appropriate metaphors’ selection in the TL is found to be affected by all of cultural as well as linguistic factors, in addition to text type and metaphor class. The study sheds light on how translators in the TL effectively address linguistic and cultural challenges during metaphor translation, offering valuable insights into the process of English-Arabic translation. Accordingly, Future studies are is recommended to comprehensively analyze metaphor translation in the political discourse context

Interdiscursivity in COVID-19 Movement Control Order Speech

Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO) has been enforced twice, on 18 March 2020 and 13 January 2021 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, both through speeches delivered on live telecast by its Prime Minister. While the speeches were aimed at informing the people of the order, it is anticipated that they contain interdiscursivity, that is a combination of discourse genres and styles, which carries out multiple functions in delivering messages pertaining to the order, based on political hegemony, ideology and culture. Prior to the announcement, the public is rife with questions and perceptions of what the MCO may involve. The speeches conveyed the Prime Minister’s and the government’s intentions such as delivering information, providing instruction, calming the people, and the like. Content analysis was conducted on two MCO speeches using qualitative approaches. The study is aimed at identifying functions and types of discourse, as well as deciphering techniques used to achieve the functions, using Idris Aman’s (2006) discourse functions analysis framework. The study proposes interdiscursivity elements in the MCO texts, realised through five main functions of informing, providing understanding, presenting/defending opinions, expressing (one’s views) and issuing orders. The study also found the use of three techniques additional to the existing framework, that of empathy, advice and appreciation. The study indicates that interdiscursivity is used in a text that contains a main objective for multiple purposes, which are determined by audience, environmental and situational factors. The presence of interdiscursivity also reflects the speaker’s communication strategy, balancing between exhibiting sensitivity to public concerns and issuing the order.

Framework for undergraduate entrepreneurship education in Australia: preliminary exploration

This study investigates engagement activities higher education institutions have been providing to develop a learning culture as well as entrepreneurship skills for undergraduate entrepreneurship education learners in Australia. This research is intended to explore changes and adjustments made in the curriculum of undergraduate entrepreneurship education programmes in selected higher education institutions in Australia due to uncertainties caused by COVID-19. We focused on six Australian universities offering undergraduate entrepreneurship programmes, which were purposefully chosen. Data and information were gathered from the universities’ websites, documents available from the same source, the universities’ structure of engagement activities, and their curriculum. Previous literature was referred to for models already proposed and executed. By considering the COVID-19 crisis as well as similar types of future uncertainties, the study has identified the necessity of implementing open innovation and experiential learning models in a blended environment and having strong IT infrastructure for sustainable industry-university collaboration to facilitate a learning culture and develop entrepreneurship skills in undergraduate entrepreneurship education learners in Australia.

Addressing defeat in a political speech: An analysis from discourse and sociocultural perspectives

Concession speeches are usually given immediately after results of an election are released. In these speeches, a losing candidate will concede defeat, before the winner presents his/her acceptance speech. However, defeats are also mentioned in speeches other than concession speeches. These are political speeches which happen some time after the defeat. By nature, political speeches provide insights into how language is utilised by politicians to achieve particular objectives. Many studies have investigated speech acts in political speeches, looking at how the speaker attempts to persuade the audience through particular language use. However, limited attention has been given to how language is used in other post-defeat speeches other than concession speeches. This study investigates a 2018 speech delivered by a politician in his losing party's first ever mass assembly after an election loss. We describe ways in which the defeat is addressed based on discourse and sociocultural practices in Fairclough's three dimensional framework. We show how the use of intertextuality and offensive strategies through word-use lead to the communication of values that aim to create a desired mindset in the audience and to gain their confidence in the politician's leadership.
