Contribution of interfacial bonding towards geopolymers properties in geopolymers reinforced fibers: a review

There is a burgeoning interest in the development of geopolymers as sustainable construction materials and incombustible inorganic polymers. However, geopolymers show quasi-brittle behavior. To overcome this weakness, hundreds of researchers have focused on the development, characterization, and implementation of geopolymer-reinforced fibers for a wide range of applications for light geopolymers concrete. This paper discusses the rapidly developing geopolymer-reinforced fibers, focusing on material and geometrical properties, numerical simulation, and the effect of fibers on the geopolymers. In the section on the effect of fibers on the geopolymers, a comparison between single and hybrid fibers will show the compressive strength and toughness of each type of fiber. It is proposed that interfacial bonding between matrix and fibers is important to obtain better results, and interfacial bonding between matrix and fiber depends on the type of material surface contact area, such as being hydrophobic or hydrophilic, as well as the softness or roughness of the surface.

Mechanical and durability analysis of fly ash based geopolymer with various compositions for rigid pavement applications

Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is a conventional material used to construct rigid pavement that emits large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) during its manufacturing process, which is bad for the environment. It is also claimed that OPC is susceptible to acid attack, which increases the maintenance cost of rigid pavement. Therefore, a fly ash based geopolymer is proposed as a material for rigid pavement application as it releases lesser amounts of CO2 during the synthesis process and has higher acid resistance compared to OPC. This current study optimizes the formulation to produce fly ash based geopolymer with the highest compressive strength. In addition, the durability of fly ash based geopolymer concrete and OPC concrete in an acidic environment is also determined and compared. The results show that the optimum value of sodium hydroxide concentration, the ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide, and the ratio of solid-to-liquid for fly ash based geopolymer are 10 M, 2.0, and 2.5, respectively, with a maximum compressive strength of 47 MPa. The results also highlight that the durability of fly ash based geopolymer is higher than that of OPC concrete, indicating that fly ash based geopolymer is a better material for rigid pavement applications, with a percentage of compressive strength loss of 7.38% to 21.94% for OPC concrete. Rapid tooling (RT) and additive manufacturing (AM) are currently being used in several parts of industry, particularly in the development of new products. The demand for timely deliveries of low-cost products in a variety of geometrical patterns is continuing to increase year by year. Increased demand for low-cost materials and tooling, including RT, is driving the demand for plastic and rubber products, along with engineering and product manufacturers. The development of AM and RT technologies has led to significant improvements in the technologies, especially in testing performance for newly developed products prior to the fabrication of hard tooling and low-volume production. On the other hand, the rapid heating cycle molding (RHCM) injection method can be implemented to overcome product surface defects generated by conventional injection molding (CIM), since the surface gloss of the parts is significantly improved, and surface marks such as flow marks and weld marks are eliminated. The most important RHCM technique is rapid heating and cooling of the cavity surface, which somewhat improves part quality while also maximizing production efficiencies. RT is not just about making molds quickly; it also improves molding productivity. Therefore, as RT can also be used to produce products with low-volume production, there is a good potential to explore RHCM in RT. This paper reviews the implementation of RHCM in the molding industry, which has been well established and undergone improvement on the basis of different heating technologies. Lastly, this review also introduces future research opportunities regarding the potential of RT in the RHCM technique.

The influence of MMA esterification on interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of hybrid kenaf bast/glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites

The demand for natural fiber hybrid composites for various applications has increased, which is leading to more research being conducted on natural fiber hybrid composites due to their promising mechanical properties. However, the incompatibility of natural fiber with polymer matrix limits the performance of the natural fiber hybrid composite. In this research work, the mechanical properties and fiber-to-matrix interfacial adhesion were investigated. The efficiency of methyl methacrylate (MMA)-esterification treatments on composites’ final product performance was determined. The composite was prepared using the hand lay-up method with varying kenaf bast fiber (KBF) contents of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 (weight%) and hybridized with glass fiber (GF) at 5 and 10 (weight%). Unsaturated polyester (UPE) resin and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) were used as binders and catalysts, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to examine the effects of MMA-esterification treatment on tensile strength and morphology (tensile fracture and characterization of MMA-esterification treatment) of the composite fabricated. The tensile strength of MMA-treated reinforced UPE and hybrid composites are higher than that of untreated composites. As for MMA treatment, 90 min of treatment showed the highest weight percent gain (WPG) and tensile strength of KBF-reinforced UPE composites. It can be concluded that the esterification of MMA on the KBF can lead to better mechanical properties and adhesion between the KFB and the UPE matrix. This research provides a clear reference for developing hybrid natural fibers, thus contributing to the current field of knowledge related to GF composites, specifically in transportation diligences due to their properties of being lightweight, superior, and involving low production cost.

Hydroxyapatite incorporated metakaolin/sludge based geopolymer adsorbent for copper ions and ciprofloxacin removal : Synthesis, characterization and mechanisms

The efficacy of copper Cu(II) adsorption is significantly affected by the presence of antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin (CIP). Therefore, researchers are highly interested in conducting extensive investigations on the simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II) and CIP. However, most of the adsorbents exhibited low adsorption capacity of CIP with increasing Cu(II) concentration due to the competition for adsorption sites. Hence, the integration of various adsorbents into a single composite could be an effective way to increase the adsorption sites. Thus, this study aims to incorporate hydroxyapatite (Hap) into metakaolin/sludge based geopolymer adsorbent for simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II) and CIP. The effect of different filler loading of Hap (1–3 %) on the metakaolin/sludge geopolymerization and also on the removal efficiency of Cu(II) and CIP were studied in a single and binary system. Moreover, the effects of varied concentrations of Cu(II) (0–100 mg/L) on the removal efficiency of CIP were investigated. Characterization techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), brunauer-emmett-teller (BET) and neutron tomography imaging were employed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the synthesized geopolymer. It was found that the Hap content has a significant impact on the removal efficiency of CIP and Cu(II). The addition of 2 % Hap providing more nucleation site for the increasing geopolymerization (C-A-S-H) and silicoalumino phosphate gel (SAP) leading to the formation of highly cross-linked geopolymer network and abundant active sites which would favour the adsorption. Moreover, the removal efficiency of CIP by 2 % Hap-geopolymer increased (25.6 % to 61.51 %) with increasing Cu(II) concentration by the complexation and bridging effect between Cu(II) and CIP resulting in the formation of GMK25S1-2Hap-Cu(II)-CIP complexes. Therefore, the hybrid method of geopolymer and Hap is an exceptionally efficient approach for the treatment of wastewater that comprises Cu(II) and CIP.

Performance of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu somposite solder with kaolin geopolymer ceramic reinforcement on microstructure and mechanical properties under isothermal ageing

This paper elucidates the effect of isothermal ageing at temperature of 85 °C, 125 °C and 150 °C for 100, 500 and 1000 h on Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) lead-free solder with the addition of 1 wt% kaolin geopolymer ceramic (KGC) reinforcement particles. SAC305-KGC composite solders were fabricated through powder metallurgy using a hybrid microwave sintering method and reflowed on copper substrate printed circuit board with an organic solderability preservative surface finish. The results revealed that, the addition of KGC was beneficial in improving the total thickness of interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer. At higher isothermal ageing of 150 °C and 1000 h, the IMC layer in SAC305-KGC composite solder was towards a planar-type morphology. Moreover, the growth of total interfacial IMC layer and Cu3Sn layer during isothermal ageing was found to be controlled by bulk diffusion and grain-boundary process, respectively. The activation energy possessed by SAC305-KGC composite solder for total interfacial IMC layer and Cu3Sn IMC was 74 kJ/mol and 104 kJ/mol, respectively. Based on a lap shear test, the shear strength of SAC305-KGC composite solder exhibited higher shear strength than non-reinforced SAC305 solder. Meanwhile, the solder joints failure mode after shear testing was a combination of brittle and ductile modes at higher ageing temperature and time for SAC305-KGC composite solder.

Metakaolin/sludge based geopolymer adsorbent on high removal efficiency of Cu2+

Activated carbon (AC) has received a lot of interest from researchers for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater due to its abundant porous structure. However, it was found unable to meet the required adsorption capacity due to its amorphous structure which restricts the fundamental studies and structural optimization for improved removal performance. In addition, AC is not applicable in large scale wastewater treatment due its expensive synthesis and difficulty in regeneration. Thus, the researchers are paying more attention in synthesis of low cost geopolymer based adsorbent for heavy metal removal due its excellent immobilization effect. However, limited studies have focused on the synthesis of geopolymer based adsorbent for heavy metal adsorption by utilizing industrial sludge. Thus, the aim of this research was to develop metakaolin (MK) based geopolymer adsorbent with incorporation of two types of industrial sludge (S1 and S3) that could be employed as an adsorbent for removing copper (Cu²⁺) from aqueous solution through the adsorption process. The effects of varied solid to liquid ratio (S/L) on the synthesis of metakaolin/sludge based geopolymer adsorbent and the removal efficiency of Cu²⁺ by the synthesis adsorbent were studied. The raw materials and synthesized geopolymer were characterized by using x-ray fluorescence (XRF), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and micro XRF. The concentration of Cu²⁺ before and after adsorption was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and the removal efficiency was calculated. The experimental data indicated that the synthesized geopolymer at low S/L ratio has achieved the highest removal efficiency of Cu²⁺ about 99.62% and 99.37% at 25%:75% of MK/S1 and 25%:75% of MK/S3 respectively compared to pure MK based geopolymer with 98.56%. The best S/L ratio for MK/S1 and MK/S3 is 0.6 at which the reaction between the alkaline activator and the aluminosilicate materials has improved and enhanced the geopolymerization process. Finally, this work clearly indicated that industrial sludge can be utilized in developing low-cost adsorbent with high removal efficiency

Potential of soil stabilization using Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and fly ash via geopolymerization method: a review

Geopolymers, or also known as alkali-activated binders, have recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional binders (cement) for soil stabilization. Geopolymers employ alkaline activation of industrial waste to create cementitious products inside treated soils, increasing the clayey soils’ mechanical and physical qualities. This paper aims to review the utilization of fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS)-based geopolymers for soil stabilization by enhancing strength. Previous research only used one type of precursor: fly ash or GGBFS, but the strength value obtained did not meet the ASTM D 4609 (<0.8 Mpa) standard required for soil-stabilizing criteria of road construction applications. This current research focused on the combination of two types of precursors, which are fly ash and GGBFS. The findings of an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test on stabilized soil samples were discussed. Finally, the paper concludes that GGBFS and fly-ash-based geo-polymers for soil stabilization techniques can be successfully used as a binder for soil stabilization. However, additional research is required to meet the requirement of ASTM D 4609 standard in road construction applications, particularly in subgrade layers.
