Enhancement on the surface quality in machining of aluminum alloy using graphene nanoparticles

Aluminum alloys are popularly used in the aerospace industry due to their lightweight and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, cutting these alloys can result in various machinability issues such as tool wear, built-up edges, and material adherence on the cutting tool. To address these issues and minimize the use of lubricants, researchers are exploring alternative greener techniques. One such technique is the use of nano lubrication technology. In this research, the consequence of three cutting techniques - dry cutting, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), and MQL dispersed with graphene nanoparticles - was experimentally studied to assess their impact on hole quality, surface roughness, and the number of holes drilled. The findings showed that the addition of graphene nanoparticles improved roughness quality, reduced tool wear, and increased the number of holes drilled, but had less impact on hole accuracy. This study highlights the importance of nanoparticles in enhancing the machinability of aluminum alloys and offers promising avenues for future research in this area.

Sustainable brick plastic recycle

Brick is a material to set up construction especially the wall parts. There are various types of bricks. However, the focus of this study is on the bricks that is consisted of recycled plastics. Plastic is the most used materials daily by humans and often being disposed in landfills and causes problems to the environment. Waste piles and pollution issues arise if plastic waste is not recycled due to its long time or duration taken to decompose. Plastic is non-biodegradable that remains as a hazardous material for more than centuries. Plastic materials can remain on earth for 4500 years without degradation, which leads to the contamination of soil. The plastic waste is composed of major toxic pollutants and has the potential to cause great harm to the environment in the forms of air, water and land pollution. This study is used plastic waste such as mineral water bottle, containers and products as plastic bricks. Plastic wastes were collected and processed by decomposing them in certain stages of heat to dilute into viscous liquid and incorporated into brick mold with standard specifications. Brick products were produced as soon as the cooling process in the mold completed and removed as interlocking plastic bricks. Compression tests were carried out to characterize mechanical properties and durability of the plastic brick. Recycled plastic materials plus organic waste (brick waste recycles mixed with recycled ceramic waste) is cheaper, durable and lightweight. Production of one-unit brick can reduce and recycle around 5 kg of plastic waste. The compression test shows that plastic bricks plus organic waste has good strength, durability and specifications as an alternative to replace conventional bricks for the purpose of modern technology construction industry, in particular the Industrialised Building Systems.

Irregular shape effect of brass and copper filler on the properties of Metal Epoxy Composite (MEC) for rapid tooling application

Due to their low shrinkage and easy moldability, metal epoxy composites (MEC) are recognized as an alternative material that can be applied as hybrid mold inserts manufactured with rapid tooling (RT) technologies. Although many studies have been conducted on MEC or reinforced composite, research on the material properties, especially on thermal conductivity and compressive strength, that contribute to the overall mold insert performance and molded part quality are still lacking. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of the cooling efficiency using MEC materials. Thus, this research aims to appraise a new formulation of MEC materials as mold inserts by further improving the mold insert performance. The effects of the thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of MEC mold inserts were examined using particles of brass (EB), copper (EC), and a combination of brass + copper (EBC) in irregular shapes. These particles were weighed at percentages ranging from 10% to 60% when mixed with epoxy resin to produce specimens according to related ASTM standards. A microstructure analysis was made using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate brass and copper particle distribution. When filler composition was increased from 10% to 60%, the values of density (g/cm3), hardness (Hv), and thermal conductivity (W/mK) showed a linear upward trend, with the highest value occurring at the highest filler composition percentage. The addition of filler composition increased the compressive strength, with the highest average compressive strength value occurring between 20% and 30% filler composition. Compressive strength indicated a nonlinear uptrend and decreased with increasing composition by more than 30%. The maximum value of compressive strength for EB, EC, and EBC was within the range of 90–104 MPa, with EB having the highest value (104 MPa). The ANSYS simulation software was used to conduct a transient thermal analysis in order to evaluate the cooling performance of the mold inserts. EC outperformed the EB and EBC in terms of cooling efficiency based on the results of thermal transient analysis at high compressive strength and high thermal conductivity conditions.

Parametric study on producing Fused Deposition Modelling filament made of recovered carbon black reinforced Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene plastics

Additive manufacturing is a process that makes three-dimensional object layer by layer. There are many different types of 3D printer and the most commonly used is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). There is a need for a new material for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) FDM filament to improve filament strength and reduce the usage of plastics. From literature, there are limited studies available on making 3D printer filament reinforced by recycled carbon black. The limitation hinders the potential of using this material in new applications. In this study, recycled carbon black powder (rCB) was added as a filler reinforcement to enhance the properties of ABS. Parameters considered in this study were percentage of filler weight loading and filler size. Tests and characterisation used in this study were tensile test, thickness test, surface roughness test, scanning electron microscopy, density test and water absorption test. There were improvements in mechanical properties such as tensile test and elasticity of the filament compared to the pure ABS plastic. The higher filler percentage can improve the elasticity of filament and lower filler percentage can improve the strength of the filament. The findings could help in improving marketability status and commercialisation potential of rCB reinforced ABS filament for FDM applications.

Design and development of fire escape window grille keyless locking system

The most fire-related fatalities are due to the smoke inhalation of the toxic gases. It is related to the victims being trapped in the building when the building was on fire. It was also reported that major deaths from fire related are from the toxic gases inhalation produced by the fire while the deaths due to fire flames and burning was about one third of the total deaths. The access to the exit door was blocked and they could not exit through the window due to the permanent grille installation. It was well aware that most Malaysian homeowners installed grilles on their house windows or doors for security reason since there are lots of break-ins incidences. To overcome the issue, this work introduces a window grille with keyless locking system. The design incorporated keyless system that can be operated or opened without a key. Several designs for implementing this solution have been described. These designs are divided into three sections, which is a grille design, expansion designs which use to accommodate a wide range of window-sized and keyless locking systems. The size and type of grille suitable for Malaysian residents as well as the more efficient keyless locking system has been studied in detail using the method of case study and survey method. Step of patent research, market analysis and benchmarking are used as methods for collecting reference data. The most effective fire escape window grille keyless locking system has been studied and designed from this project. An important factor in designing a fire window grille is the design that can be opened and does not require a key operation. The results of the design and analysis tested are presented such that they can be used as an aid to the design of fire escape features.

Influence of Size Effect on Cutting Edge Rounding and Surface Roughness in Micro-Milling of Ti-6Al-4V

The quality of cutting depends most on the cutting tool condition. Towards having a good quality finish, cutting tolerance becomes a major concern, especially when machining at micro-scale where highly precise cutting is desired. This research investigates the size-effect during the micro-milling of Ti-6Al-4V under dry condition where the observations were made on cutting edge rounding (CER) and workpiece surface roughness. The result showed that the lower the feed rate, the greater rounding on the cutting edges were observed. Similar trend in result was obtained when measuring the surface roughness. The best feed rate for both observations was at 60 mm/min, where this setting has brought the mechanism to shearing, as the ratio between undeformed chip thickness and cutting edge radius started at 1.

Sustainable packaging design for molded expanded polystyrene cushion

A molded expanded polystyrene (EPS) cushion is a flexible, closed-cell foam that can be molded to fit any packing application and is effective at absorbing shock. However, the packaging waste of EPS cushions causes pollution to landfills and the environment. Despite being known to cause pollution, this sustainable packaging actually has the potential to reduce this environmental pollution because of its reusability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the accurate design parameter that can be emphasized in producing a sustainable design of EPS cushion packaging. An experimental method of drop testing and design simulation analysis was conducted. The effectiveness of the design parameters was also verified. Based on the results, there are four main elements that necessitate careful consideration: rib positioning, EPS cushion thickness, package layout, and packing size. These parameter findings make a significant contribution to sustainable design, where these elements were integrated directly to reduce and reuse packaging material. Thus, it has been concluded that 48 percent of the development cost of the cushion was decreased, 25 percent of mold modification time was significantly saved, and 27 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction was identified. The findings also aided in the development of productive packaging design, in which these design elements were beneficial to reduce environmental impact. These findings had a significant impact on the manufacturing industry in terms of the economics and time of the molded expanded polystyrene packaging development.
