dc.description.abstract Significant growth in the development and application employing advanced materials such as fibre reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite is observed. Generally, these category of composite materials are superior to current metal-based pipeline materials used in the industry due to the composite materials could offered high chemical and corrosion resistance, light in weight, higher specific stiffness and strength, and provides excellent in noise, vibration and hardness characteristics. Therefore, it introduces an imaging research application on multiphase transportation pipeline investigation model using glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite process column. The recent research trend and applications that are employing ultrasonic process tomography has been discussed and focuses to the transmission-mode ultrasonic tomography technique for liquid/gas two-phase static flow investigation in an opaque glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite process column. The proposed ultrasonic tomography system and a liquid heating system have been designed and developed in order to conduct experiments with elevated liquid temperature rating from 25 °C to a maximum limit of 60 °C and used to evaluate the performance of the system. An image reconstruction technique namely Linear Back Projection algorithm was proposed to reconstruct the tomogram images using engineering software. The reconstructed tomogram results due to the changes of liquid static flow temperature were observed and the reconstructed tomogram images were examined with an image quality assessment called weighted mean Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) index. The reconstructed images indicated that the elevated of the temperature rating of the liquid medium in the experiments were reduced the reconstructed image quality and further decreased the ultrasonic imaging capability. The developed ultrasonic tomography system was provided significance imaging results especially at temperature rating between 25 °C to 40 °C, thus, it was recommended to operate the developed ultrasonic system at temperature rating between 25 °C to 40 °C.
