Abstract
Heat energy is important for electrical iron to play role in loosening the bonds between the long-chain polymer molecules of fibers material to remove wrinkles from fabric. However, the heat energy produce by electrical iron will also cause the risk of burning on fabric and epidermis of user and person surrounded. According to research from The Sydney Children's Hospital network, they are around 154 children aged 0-4 years were treated at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia as a result of an iron burn between 2005 to 2009. In this product development project, conventional electrical iron is developed with design several safety features to reduce the risk of burning. By modify mechanical and electrical features, the automatic switch OFF system is apply on electrical iron and with using springs to make iron become compressible and retractable to produce air gap between heating plate and base soleplate. Based on the results data recorded, new design electrical iron able to show inversely proportional relationship of rate of temperature changed on cooling process. Therefore the risk of burning had been reduced by decreasing the rate of temperature change on cooling process.
