The behaviours of steel fiber as main reinfocement in high performance slurry infiltrated fiber reinforced concrete

Concrete is a structure that very weak in tension and need additional material to enhance their structural capacity. In 18thcentury, concrete have been recognized as structure that very weak in tension [. Thus, concrete need additional supporting material that can improve the tension capacity. Because of the steel is very good in tension, the steel bar was embedded in concrete at the tensile stress area to obtain the full capacity of the steel bar as reinforcement.

Effects of trans-polyoctylene rubber in polypropylene/recycled acrylonitrile butadiene/rice husk powder composites

Composites of polypropylene/Acylonitrile butadiene rubber/Rice husk powder/ (PP/NBRr/RHP) with and without trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) were prepared, and the effects of trans-polyoctylene rubber were investigated. By using rice husk powder of 150300μm, five different compositions of PP/NBRr/RHP composites (i.e.100/0, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 40/60 phr) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180 °C and 50 rpm rotor speed. The results indicate that the incorporation of TOR improved the tensile properties of PP/NBRr/RHPcomposites. Scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surfaces proved that TOR promoted good adhesion between the PP-NBRr matrices and RHP.

Comparison of artificial neural network and support vector machine for long-term runoff simulation

Simulation of runoff from a river catchment is a very difficult task and it involves a lot of data which need to be considered. However, the modelling is very essential to forecast the patterns of future runoff by observing and analysing previous patterns of runoff, based on the rainfall. This study presents the evaluation of rainfall-runoff modelling for the long-term runoff series using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Both models are trained and validated using the data series of current and nine (9) antecedent rainfall. During the validation, the SVM model is better in the performance as compared the ANN model, with the R and RMSE values are 0.529-0.711 and 14.27-52.55 mm, respectively. However, the SVM model is underestimated for the peak discharge. Both models have the ability to derive the relationship between the inputs and outputs of the rainfall-runoff process.

Physical behaviours of maximum loading and cracking for slurry infiltrated fibre reinforced concrete

Concrete prisms are being test with flexural testing by different percentage volume of steel fibres. The total number of 24 prisms were made which contain 3 %, 6 % and 9 % of steel fibres respectively. This only consist experimental results. Specimens used in this study using a prism mold of 100 mm x 100 mm x 500 mm. Eighteen prisms will be added with a layer of 10 mm of steel fibre using slurry method. All of the samples were tested using flexural testing to determine the maximum loading. The highlight scope of this research is to evaluate the physical behavior of Slurry Infiltrated Fibre Reinforced Concrete in term of maximum load and cracking pattern. The results of the study were also compared with concrete without steel fibres. However, the workability of the concrete decreased as the number of steels fibre increase. The maximum load was obtained by the lowest percentage of steel fibre (3%).

Green roof performance under malaysia tropical climates: a review

Green roof system is one of sustainable approach for energy consumption reduction and improving the aesthetic value of the built environment. The system has been adopted by most of developed countries; and in Malaysia, research on green roof studies are quite evolving however the implementation of the system is slow due to some perceptions and obstacles. Green roof has potential on providing benefits such as reduction on the urban heat island effect, reduces temperatures, pollution and improves the attenuation of stormwater. This paper will highlights on a preliminary review of the implementation green roof system in Malaysia and explores the performances of Malaysian green roof in order to highlight the performance of green roof under tropical climatic conditions using local configurations.

BIM and CMMS for IBS building maintenance in Malaysia

IBS construction is gradually increasing in many building projects in Malaysia. The projects have involved modern, contemporary and innovation design for construction. The increase of demands for IBS construction every year indirectly contributes the building and infrastructure development but maintenance management however is poor, possesses low defect diagnosis and limited decision making process to repairing. These problems become more complicated in complex and high-rise building projects like Malaysia to which IBS building construction is practiced. Conventionally, the repairing maintenance method (fragmentation approach) has been criticized for serious unacceptable quality or productivity, budget and concept of the IBS building maintainability (reworks and delay). Therefore, a novel and more sophisticated technique is proposed for improving defect diagnosis and decision making process by employing BIM and CMMS integration in maintenance management on IBS buildings in Malaysia.

A study on the effect of flooding depths and duration on soil subgrade performance and stability

In the event of flooding, the road infrastructure especially the subgrade will be affected in terms of its capacity to support the pavement. It is well known that subgrade deterioration will eventually cause pavement failure. However, little is known on how the subgrade reacts to different flooding conditions especially in terms of the depth and duration of the floods. The aims of this study are to evaluate the moisture content variation and strength of the subgrade using the flood simulation model. The pavement loading characteristics are referred to the Manual on Flexible Pavement Design published by the Malaysian Public Works Department (ATJ 5/85 Rev. 2013). The flood parameters used for this experimental model are based on actual data of flooding events from 1991 to 2014. It includes the parameters of flood water level, flood duration and repeated flooding. The samples were exposed to flooding for a duration of 3, 24 and 48 hours for unrepeated flooding and 2, 5, and 24 hours for repeated flooding. Flood water levels were set to 0.3 m, 0.6 m and 1 m. This study shows that there is a strong relationship between moisture content and subgrade strength. The increase in the duration of the flooding affected the performance of the subgrade due to the increasing moisture content. The study also revealed that the rate of deterioration in subgrade strength for second flooding events is 15% more than for first flooding events. The result of this experiment will be used to develop the basis for including flooding characteristics in the modified California Bearing Ratio test for soils in flood prone areas.

Load-Displacement Behaviors of Reinforced Concrete Beam Embedded with Galvanized Steel Cable: Comparison Between Experiment and Finite Element Analysis

Lightning is a natural phenomenon which occurred when the upper atmosphere becomes unstable due to rising air currents. Lightning can be one of the natural causes of human injuries or damage to electrical equipment. In order to create a system to protect buildings from this natural phenomenon, the Lightning Protection System (LPS) was introduced. However, various problems have been associated with this conventional method. A common problem related to external lightning protection cables is corrosion. Therefore, the newly arrangement of lightning protection cable was proposed and investigated. Galvanized steel cable was used in this research due to suitability of the materials to be embedded inside reinforced concrete beam. Load-displacement behavior from the three (3) point flexural test was compared with the finding from the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). From the result, FEA showed slightly higher than experiment result at the maximum load.
