In this work, the influences of different concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (3, 6 and 9 wt.%) on the flexural and impact properties of linear low-density polyethylene / date seeds (LLDPE/DS) composites were examined. The LLDPE / DS ratio was fixed at 90/10 wt.% and the size of DS particles was measured at 125 - 250 micro m. The process used to synthesize the composites id extrusion followed by injuction molding process. Results showed that the presence of NaOH particularly at 6 wt.% concentration has improved the flexural and impact properties of the composite. This is due to bonding of the date seeds particles with the LLDPE matrix that reflected posativelly on the mechanical properties of the composite. However, the using of high NaOH concentration (9 wt.%) has shown an opposite trend, the increasing of surface roughness of the fiber after 9% NaOH treatment has reduced the flexibility of the composite and made it stiffer and more rigid, which in turn made it easy to break during mechanical test.

2020-01-01 , Dahham O.S. , Rosniza Hamzah , Abu Bakar M. , Nik Noriman Zulkepli , Alakrach A.M. , Sam Sung Ting , Mohd Firdaus Omar , Tijjani Adam , Al-rashdi A.A.

The ring-opening reactions (ROR) of epoxide groups in epoxidized natural rubber/titania (ENR-50/TiO2) hybrid in potassium hydroxide/isopropanol medium were examined using NMR spectroscopy and supported by the FTIR technique. The thermal behaviour of the hybrid was also studied using TG/DTG and DSC analyses. The 1H NMR results suggested that 16.82% of ROR occurred in the hybrid, while the 13C NMR results exhibited five new peaks at δ 19.5, 71.0, 73.7, 91.7 and 94.4 ppm in the hybrid. 2D NMR, such as HMQC, HMBC and COSY techniques, further scrutinized these assignments. The FTIR spectrum exhibited Ti-O-C characteristics via the peak at 1028 cm−1. The TG/DTG results showed four steps of thermal degradation at 44–148, 219–309, 331–489 and 629–810 °C due to the existence of Ti moieties along with a polymer chain mixture (intact and ring-opened epoxide groups) of ENR-50, which in turn led to an increase in the Tg value of the hybrid to 27 °C compared to that of purified ENR-50 at −17.72 °C.

2020-03-25 , Khor Shing Fhan , Cheng Ee Meng , Banjuraizah Johar , Nashrul Fazli Mohd Nasir , Zaizul M.A. , Wan Azani Wan Mustafa , Nik Noriman Zulkepli , Dahham O.S.

Dielectric properties of rambutan wood (Nephelium Lappaceum) were investigated in three anisotropic directions, namely miters-cut, cross-cut, and rib-cut. Dielectric constants and dielectric loss factors were measured at ambient temperatures by using an impedance analyzer. The dielectric constant decreased as frequency increased from 4 to 1 MHz. Among the wood specimens, the rib-cut direction has the lowest dielectric constant, while the cross-cut direction has the highest value. A dielectric dispersion occurred within frequencies 100 Hz to 10 kHz, which corresponding to a relaxation peak as observed on dielectric loss factor spectra. The relaxation peak value of the dielectric loss factors shifted towards higher frequencies in the sequence of rib-cut, miters-cut, and cross-cut specimen. Above 500 Hz, the cross-cut specimen has the highest value conductivity than others. Generally, these variations were subjected to the anatomical structure in the wood, such as parenchyma, ray cell, vessel cell, and fiber cell.

The influence of trans-polyoctylene rubber on the linear low-density polyethylene/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber/kenaf composites

2020-03-25 , Othman N.S. , Ragunathan Al Santiagoo , Azhar A.S. , Wan Azani Wan Mustafa , Nik Noriman Zulkepli , Dahham O.S.

The fabrication of new thermoplastic elastomer composites made up from linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and kenaf core (KC) were studied. The composites with and without trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) as compatibilizer was investigated. LLDPE/NBR/KC composite samples were prepared by using a heated two-roll mill at 130°C for 13 minutes. Then, the composite were moulded by using hot press machines at temperature of 130°C within 12 minutes. The ratio of composite investigated were 100/0/10, 80/20/10, 70/30/10, 60/40/10, 50/50/10 and 40/60/10 for both series. Meanwhile, the ratio of TOR was fixed at 10phr for composite with compatibilizer. The tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break were recorded using INSTRON Universal Testing machine. The morphological properties of composites were also observed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Meanwhile, the chemical composition of composite with and without TOR compatibilizer was investigated by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). From the result obtained, the tensile strength and modulus were decreased with increasing of NBR loading while the elongation at break (Eb) was increased. The morphological examination indicated that the presence of TOR compatibilizers showed improvement in adhesion and better interfacial bonding between filler and matrix.

The effects on different date seeds loading and size of LLDPE/Date seeds composites: Flexural properties and impact strength

2020-03-25 , Elnaid A. , Nik Noriman Zulkepli , Dahham O.S. , Rosniza Hamzah , Muhammad Azizi Azizan , Hazry Desa , Umar M.U.

This work evaluated the effect of different loading and size of date seeds (DS) on some mechanical properties of LLDPE/DS composites. Three different size (125 - 250 mm, 250-500 mm, and 500 - 1000 â–¡m) and four different size loading (5, 10, 15, 20 wt%) of DS were used in this work. Flexural and Impact properties were evaluated when DS added to the LLDPE/DS composites. In order to fabricate this composite, the extrusion process followed by injection molding process was used respectively. It is found that the Flexural strength and Flexural modulus decreased with the increasing of date seeds loading in the composites. Furthermore, the Flexural properties of the composite with a coarser size of DS reduced more than other size of DS. The results of the impact strength testing have shown a similar trend of flexural properties. The LLDPE/DS composites at high DS loading show low impact strength (IS) value. Furthermore, the DS coarser size shows lower impact strength than other DS size. The reduction of the mechanical properties in the composites was probably due to the lack of a suitable coupling agent system need to be used to improve the adhesion bonding between filler and matrix.

2020-03-25 , Muhammad Azizi Azizan , Nik Noriman Zulkepli , Hazry Desa , Nurfadzillah Ishak , Dahham O.S. , Umar M.U. , Jaya H.

Road and highway observation is critical for road engineers to determine the information of the highway itself for the needs of maintenance, rehabilitation and even in construction. This research reviews the efficiency of information of roads and highway by visual and experience. The mean of visual includes the usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and on spot observation. It also reveals the image based, photogrammetric and stereo-vision, and mobile mapping systems. The software output has compatibility with known CAD/GIS packages to widen its scope of applications. Methodologies, examples and demonstration related to the use of the developed software and laser scanning data in road mapping for a case study are described. The results showed the flexibilities of the developed software and the proposed method for generating the necessary maps and data for road distresses such as longitudinal cracks, transverse cracks, patch deterioration, potholes, and ravelling. However, the present work shows that using terrestrial laser scanning technologies for modelling the road surface has advantages such as surveying speed, big roads, highways and tunnels. Also it provides the safety for surveyors and the absence of a disruption to traffic. The developed software and methodology are suitable for universities, academic centres and are of great interest to small engineering firms for the generation of road surface maps.
