Design of Compact UHF-RFID Tag Antenna with Meander Line Technique

In this paper, a compact UHF RFID tag antenna that can operate at Malaysia UHF RFID frequency (860 MHz - 960MHz) is proposed. The antenna with a common geometry structure without any shorting pin consists of 90degree angled line (meander line) and double T-match structure. The proposed antenna has been designed and simulated using CST Simulation software. The proposed tag antenna design shows a good performance in terms of size, gain and impedance with a dimension of 36 mm 25 mm 1.6 mm. The simulated gain of antenna obtained is -0.135 dB at 910 MHz with 19 MHz bandwidth.

Frequency Reconfigurable DRA using RF Switch Loaded Feedline for 5G NR Band n48, n77 and n78

This paper presents a frequency reconfigurable DRA. The size of the antenna is approximately 50 mm by 40 mm, thus it can be considered a compact design. This antenna was designed using Rogers RO4003 substrate and the DRA material used was Eccostock HIK. To achieve frequency reconfiguration, the length of the antenna feedline was reconfigured by the means of RF switches. The proposed design consists of four configurations and all those conditions achieved reflection coefficient of less than -10 dB. The antenna also produced consistent gain for all configurations with average gain of 5 dBi. The switched frequencies from the proposed antenna can cover 5G New Radio Bands n48, n77 and n78.

Mobile Green E-Waste Management Systems using IoT for Smart Campus

This paper presents the design and development of mobile "green"electronic waste (e-waste) management systems using Internet of Things (IoT) for smart campus. The system uses Raspberry Pi 3 Model B v1.2 microcontroller for monitoring e-waste object detection, e-waste count, and bin percentage level, respectively. TensorFlow Lite application programming interface (API) is used to run Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD)Lite-MobileNet-v2 model trained on Microsoft Common Objects in Context (MSCOCO) dataset for e-waste object detection in image. All the monitoring data are stored and retrieved in ThingSpeak cloud platform using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol over the Internet and displayed via interactive Android-based mobile user interface (UI). Furthermore, automatic e-mail notification will be sent to waste collector for bin collection whenever e-waste bin percentage level is greater than predetermined threshold value of 80% full.

This paper describes a smart monitoring gate-less system by using RFID technologies that had been implemented in Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The objective of this system is to ease the security to monitoring the cars-in and cars-out from the main gate manually. The security can check and manage the staff by system management in PC. This smart monitoring gate-less system consists of RFID tag antenna that be attached at sticker's staff, RFID reader and software management application. For the software management application, this project used LabView as a simulation tool for the data acquisition. The data which contains of name, staff number, number plate, car model and color will be stored in cloud-based storage. All the information data can be accessed from any location because the security management can access it through mobile. This project will present how efficient the vehicle control application on campus which enable the security guard to check a car sticker either legal or illegal in a shortest way.

Medium sized industrial motor solutions to mitigate the issue of high inrush starting current

Starting of a medium or large induction motors generate such a large current during direct-on-line (DOL) starting process to the point that it can drop the voltage of power supply. The induction motor can be broken, its characteristics can be changed, and performances of the motor can be worsened. A significant higher starting current than the rated current can generate mechanical and thermal stress on the motor and the loads. High-voltage fluctuations, dips and sags can arise in electrical power systems associated with the motor. To overcome this problem, various starters were designed. There are several types of starters in which can be divided into conventional starters and power electronic drives. Conventional starters are such as direct-online, star-delta and autotransformer whereas the example for power electronics are matrix converter, frequency inverter and soft starter. In this paper, the design of autotransformer and soft starter are focused in order to compare inrush current during the start-up three phase medium sized industrial induction motor by using MATLAB/Simulink software. Both starters were targeted to resolve the problems inherent in the dynamic operation of induction motors, which included current and torque surges during the motor start up. The autotransformer gives the choice to consumer in selecting different tap values, in which is the advantage to consumer to vary their starting current and starting torque according to its application. On the other hand, the three-phase soft starter employs two anti-parallel connected switches in each phase. Thyristors act as the switches due to their higher power rating and high efficiency. Then, both methods will be compared to prove the best performance in mitigate high inrush current. The best of the two is likely to be the answer for mitigating the issue of high inrush starting current for a medium size motor at industries.

A Frequency-Reconfigurable Microstrip Antenna with Constant Dipole-Like Radiation Patterns Using Single Bias, Triple Varactor Tuning with Reduced Complexity

This work proposes a novel frequency-reconfigurable circular patch antenna incorporated with a rectangular slot and a narrow slot capable of producing constant dipole-like radiation patterns. The antenna compactness is achieved with the integration of the rectangular slot defected ground structure (DGS) on the ground. The proposed antenna is able to perform continuous frequency tuning between 1.91 and 2.77 GHz with a frequency ratio of 1.5:1, in addition to stable dipole-like radiation patterns. The resonant frequency of the antenna is controlled by tuning a simple DC biasing network that consists of three RF varactor diodes located on the narrow slot DGS. Implementing the DC biasing network at the narrow slot DGS while maintaining the large slot DGS helps the antenna miniaturization and maintains the constant dipole-like radiation pattern over all frequency tuning range. The results are validated via simulations and experimental validations in terms of reflection coefficients and the radiation patterns. Measurements indicated that an impedance bandwidth of 85 MHz is featured for each tuned frequency band, with dipole-like patterns and an average gain of 1.57 dBi.

Green Internet of Things (GIoT): Applications, Practices, Awareness, and Challenges

Internet of things (IoT) is one of key pillars in fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) networks. It is estimated to have 42 billion IoT devices by the year 2025. Currently, carbon emissions and electronic waste (e-waste) are significant challenges in the information communication technologies (ICT) sector. The aim of this article is to provide insights on green IoT (GIoT) applications, practices, awareness, and challenges to a generalist of wireless communications. We garner various efficient enablers, architectures, environmental impacts, technologies, energy models, and strategies, so that a reader can find a wider range of GIoT knowledge. In this article, various energy efficient hardware design principles, data-centers, and software based data traffic management techniques are discussed as enablers of GIoTs. Energy models of IoT devices are presented in terms of data communication, actuation process, static power dissipation and generated power by harvesting techniques for optimal power budgeting. In addition, this article presents various effective behavioral change models and strategies to create awareness about energy conservation among users and service providers of IoTs. Fog/Edge computing offers a platform that extends cloud services at the edge of network and hence reduces latency, alleviates power consumption, offers improved mobility, bandwidth, data privacy, and security. Therefore, we present the energy consumption model of a fog-based service under various scenarios. Problems related to ever increasing data in IoT networks can be solved by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) along with machine learning (ML) models in IoT networks. Therefore, this article provides insights on role of the ML in the GIoT. We also present how legislative policies support adoption of recycling process by various stakeholders. In addition, this article is presenting future research goals towards energy efficient hardware design principles and a need of coordination between policy makers, IoT devices manufacturers along with service providers.

Gain Enhancement of Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna Using Air Gap

This paper presents a gain enhanced rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) using air gap. The air gap placed under the dielectric resonator antenna and above the ground plane. A gain of 6.605 dBi obtained from the DRA with air gap while gain of 5.956 dBi is achieved by DRA without air gap. The size of the antenna is approximately 50 mm by 40 mm, thus it can be considered a compact design. This antenna designed using Rogers RO4003 substrate and the DRA material is Eccostock HIK. All the design and simulation results are conducted using CST Studio Suite 2019 software. Based on the result, it shows that the antenna operates with reflection coefficient of less than -10 dB at the desired operating frequency range, centered at 3.5 GHz. The inclusion of air gap proved that it can enhance the gain value of the DRA.

Drunken drive detection with smart ignition lock

Drink and drive issue have become solemnly that needs immediate attention. This is due to drivers’ ignorance towards road rules and regulations and their selfish attitude that caused loss of innocent lives. Although previously there is a drunk detecting mechanism using breathalyzer but it isn’t suitable for current fast-paced lifestyle. Therefore, to overcome these issues, this system is proposed. This system is fixed on vehicle’s steering to measure alcohol concentration reading using MQ-3 sensor from the driver’s exhaled breath. If the driver found to be drunk beyond the threshold level of 400 ppm, then ignition lock is activated and the car engine does not start till alcohol concentration falls to a safe level. Or, if the driver consumes an alcoholic drink while driving, upon exceeding permissible limit, the car slows down till it stops. Then, the location of the vehicle is tracked and sent as Google Map integrated link via text message to authorized unit. Simultaneously, the car buzzer goes off while the car slows down so that surrounding road users are aware of the driver’s condition and drives at a distance. The proposed detection system is highly potential to be implemented for reducing the drunk and drive accidents.
