Fault localization and detection in medium voltage distribution network using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (anfis)

This paper provides an overview method of ANFIS to improve the performance of locating and detecting a single line to ground fault in medium voltage (MV) distribution power system network. For this research, the proposed method used faulted current signals from the network as an input in ANFIS to obtain the expected fault location and detection. In order to accurately locate the faults in the network, an ANFIS was trained and tested using various sets of data, which was obtained from the simulation of faults at various fault scenarios such as inception angle, load, fault location, and fault resistance. Based on the result obtain, the fault distance, major and minor branch of the single line to ground fault can be located with minimal error.

Effect of load variation and fault resistance on the operation time of IDMT overcurrent relay

Fault can occur in power system due to many factors such as lightning, tree or crane encroachment, animal intervention, human error etc. Each fault occurrence has its own fault resistance value, and this value is unknown to the protection relay used to the protect the circuit. Besides that, the connected load in power system is dynamic where the value is changing over time. It is very important for the protection relay to be as reliable as it can so that the fault can be isolated as soon as possible when a fault occur. This paper study the effect of fault resistance value and load variation on IDMT overcurrent relay operation time. This relay is used to protect the line from fault occurrence where the higher the fault current, the faster the operation time will be. MATLAB Simulink has been used to model the transmission line, source, connected load and IDMT overcurrent relay. Faults simulations were conducted for various fault resistance and load values and the effects on relay operation time have been analysed. From the results, it was found that, the higher the fault resistance, the higher the operation time while the higher the value of connected load at the end of the line, the faster the relay operation time

Improving the performance of solar panels by the used of dual axis solar tracking system with mirror reflection

This work proposes the dual axis solar tracker with mirror reflection for optimum output of solar panel by using arduino unoR3 as the control unit. The objectives of this work are to track and optimize the maximum output power of the solar panel by designing and developing a dual axis solar tracker with mirror reflection. The system includes a 10 watt solar panel, an arduino unoR3 and a customized mechanical body to carry the solar panel. This system will track and detect the angle of the sun to locate the surface of solar panel at the position and the angle where it can get maximum amount of energy. The sensors will detect the position of the sun and servo motors act as free moving neck to make it easier to move freely depending on the angle detected. The Light Depending Resistor (LDR) will be used in tracking system. These LDR will detect the existence of sunlight and therefore the mechanical hardware will move horizontal and vertical axis depending on the value of LDR detected to follow the angular degree of sun in order to get maximum and best result of absorbing energy. The final result obtained from dual axis solar tracker showed that the output power has been maximized compared to stationary panel. Based on the experimental result, it show that the designed system successful improve the performance of the solar panel.

Arcing fault diagnosis using first peak arrival of EM radiation signal

The objective of this study was to diagnose the arcing fault signals based on the first peak of arrival method using antenna to assess its use as potential arcing fault detection in power system network. Square patch antenna and circle patch antenna were employed for detection on artificial arcing in real environment. First peak of arcing signal arrival was measured through an analysis over a range of time and amplitude signals detected. For accurate results, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) denoising technique was applied to the arcing signals detected as denoising tools. Analysis of first peak of signal arrival time and amplitude were carried out using MATLAB software to measure the changes in signals detected caused by di different placements of antenna. The results revealed that the first peak of signal arrival time, amplitude, type of antenna used and placement of the antenna around arcing source point all reflect the signals measurement.

Back flashover voltage on transmission tower of 275 KV extra high voltage line (case study: Galang-Binjai)

Overvoltage at the insulator terminal caused by a lightning strike can occur in two ways, i.e., a direct lightning strike on the phase line and ground wire. The insulator can be exposed to the phenomenon of back flashover (BFO) if the terminal voltage of the insulator is higher than its insulator critical voltage The lightning current characteristics are distinguished by the maximum current and the steepness. Differences in the characteristics in this study are identified as International Electrical Commission (IEC) and Conseil International des Grands Reseaux Electriques (CIGRE) impulse waveform standards. The footing-tower grounding system comes in different configurations, such as horizontal, vertical, and grid. Alternative transient program (ATP) software was used for simulating lightning strikes on ground wire and phase lines. The results exhibit that the highest critical voltage of the insulators on the footing tower through grid grounding when the surge current strikes ground wire (3308kV – 3395 kV), with the magnitude of the lightning current ranging from (48 kA – 3395 kA). For lightning direct stroke on the phase line, the critical voltage on vertical grounding is highest on (2938 kV-3021 kV). The surge current flow footing-tower is highest on the grid. The currents magnitude flow in footing tower were influenced by impedance of grounding.

Differential equation fault location algorithm with harmonic effects in power system

About 80% of faults in the power system distribution are earth faults. Studies to find effective methods to identify and locate faults in distribution networks are still relevant, in addition to the presence of harmonic signals that distort waves and create deviations in the power system that can cause many problems to the protection relay. This study focuses on a single line-to-ground (SLG) fault location algorithm in a power system distribution network based on fundamental frequency measured using the differential equation method. The developed algorithm considers the presence of harmonics components in the simulation network. In this study, several filters were tested to obtain the lowest fault location error to reduce the effect of harmonic components on the developed fault location algorithm. The network model is simulated using the alternate transients program (ATP)Draw simulation program. Several fault scenarios have been implemented during the simulation, such as fault resistance, fault distance, and fault inception angle. The final results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate the fault distance successfully with an acceptable fault location error. Based on the simulation results, the differential equation continuous wavelet technique (CWT) filter-based algorithm produced an accurate fault location result with a mean average error (MAE) of less than 5%.

Enhanced two-terminal impedance-based fault location using sequence values

Fault at transmission line system may lead to major impacts such as power quality problems and cascading failure in the grid system. Thus, it is very important to locate it fast so that suitable solution can be taken to ensure power system stability can be retained. The complexity of the transmission line however makes the fault point identification a challenging task. This paper proposes an enhanced fault detection and location method using positive and negative-sequence values of current and voltage, taken at both local and remote terminals. The fault detection is based on comparison between the total fault current with currents combination during the pre-fault time. While the fault location algorithm was developed using an impedance-based method and the estimated fault location was taken at two cycles after fault detection. Various fault types, fault resistances and fault locations have been tested in order to verify the performance of the proposed method. The developed algorithms have successfully detected all faults within high accuracy. Based on the obtained results, the estimated fault locations are not affected by fault resistance and line charging current. Furthermore, the proposed method able to detect fault location without the needs to know the fault type.

Two-terminal fault detection and location for hybrid transmission circuit

This paper presents the algorithms developed to detect and locate the faults at a hybrid circuit. First, the fault detection algorithm was developed using the comparison of total positive-sequence fault current between pre-fault and fault times to detect the occurrence of a fault. Then, the voltage check method was used to decide whether the fault occurred at overhead line (OHL) or cable section. Finally, the fault location algorithm using the impedance-based method and negative-sequence measurements from both terminals of the circuit were used to estimate the fault point from local terminal. From the tests of various fault conditions including different fault types, fault resistance and fault locations, the proposed method successfully detected all fault cases at around 1 cycle from fault initiation and with correct faulted section identification. Besides that, the fault location algorithm also has very accurate results of fault estimation with average error less than 1 km and 1%.

Neural Network based Transmission Line Fault Classifier and Locator using Sequence Values

Faults can easily occur at transmission line because the line is exposed to the environment. The fast fault location after a fault occurrence will minimize the time to repair the faulty part thus reduce the stress of power system due to long outage time. This paper demonstrates the development of fault classifier and fault locator using neural network. The positive, negative and zero sequence values of three-phase voltage and current during fault time were used as the inputs to train the neural networks. Various fault conditions which have different fault types, fault resistance values and fault locations have been simulated to generate the training data for both neural network based fault classifier and fault locator. From the results, the fault classifier and locator successfully classified and located all the simulated fault conditions. One of the advantages of using sequence values as the inputs for the neural networks is only one fault type need to be simulated and used as the training data for single line-to-ground fault (RG, YG and BG), line-to-line fault (RY, YB, BR) and double line-to-ground fault (RYG, YBG, BRG).

Effect of distributed generation to the faults in medium voltage network using ATP-EMTP simulation

During past few years, distributed generation (DG) technology has been widely known in the industry as it can helps in providing backup power during high power demand. However, adding a new system may changes the traditional power system that are usually work in one direction which is from the generation to the consumer. When DG is added, the power flows from two direction. Therefore, a short circuit study was done to study the effects of DG to the local system during fault. An IEC Standard was also calculated as guidance to determine the thermally permissible of a cable.
