Analysis on silica and graphene nanomaterials obtained from rice straw for antimicrobial potential

This study focuses on the encapsulation of silica and graphene nanoparticles and their potential applications. The encapsulation enhances the properties and effectiveness of these nanoparticles, with silica providing stability and graphene contributing to high surface area and electrical conductivity. Characterization of silica-graphene nanoparticles was conducted using various techniques including High Power Microscope (HPM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and 3D Nano Profiler. The antimicrobial activity of silica, graphene, and silica-graphene nanoparticles was evaluated using a disc diffusion assay against E. coli and B. subtilis at varying concentrations. Results showed significant antimicrobial activity, with the inhibition zone being directly proportional to the concentration. Silica-graphene nanoparticles demonstrated higher efficacy against E. coli compared to B. subtilis, attributed to differences in cell wall structure. Statistical analysis using ANOVA confirmed significant differences in antimicrobial activity among the tested components.

Knowledge mapping trends of Internet of Things (IoT) in plant disease and insect pest study: a visual analysis

The study and literature on the Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications in agriculture for smart farming are increasing worldwide. However, the knowledge mapping trends related to IoT applications in plant disease, pest management, and control are still unclear and rarely reported. The primary aim of the present study is to identify the current trends and explore hot topics of IoT in plant disease and insect pest research for future research direction. Peer review articles published from Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection (2010-2021) were identified using keywords, and extracted database was analysed scientifically via Microsoft Excel 2019, VOSviewer and R programming software. A total of 231 documents with 5321 cited references authored by 878 scholars showed that the knowledge on the studied area has been growing positively and rapidly for the past ten years. India and China are the most productive countries, comprising more than half (52%) of the total access database on the subject area in WoS. IoT application has been integrated with other knowledge domains, such as machine learning, deep learning, image processing, and artificial intelligence, to produce excellent crop and pest disease monitoring research. This study contributes to the current knowledge of the research topic and suggests possible hot topics for future direction.

Automatic monitoring of class A pan evaporation using the Internet of Things (IoT)

This study aimed to assess suitable water level sensor types and implement the automated monitoring of water levels within a Class A pan evaporation system using the Internet of Things (IoT). Both analogue and ultrasonic water level sensors underwent testing in controlled laboratory conditions for performance analysis. The results showed that the analogue water level sensor exhibited suboptimal output sensor responses compared to the ultrasonic sensor, primarily due to its susceptibility to variations in solution types and immersion depths. In contrast, ultrasonic sensors demonstrated strong performance with acceptable error rates, as evidenced by the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 1.03, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 1.42, and Coefficient of Determination (R²) of 0.94 during laboratory testing. However, the ultrasonic sensor's performance was somewhat reduced during field testing, exhibiting accuracy levels ranging from 6.7% to 51.2% within a greenhouse environment during rock melon cultivation. These discoveries highlight the feasibility of using ultrasonic sensors with environmental calibration to automate real-time evaporation measurements towards precision irrigation practices.

Finite element analysis on solar mobile dryer for shrimp paste drying application

In the production of the shrimp paste, usually, the sun drying processing is not done hygienically. A small and mobile solar dyer could be used by the entrepreneurs to improve its wholesomely. This study aims to evaluate the simulation data analysis of the temperature contours resulting from the mobile solar dryer using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This study was conducted in two different sets of ambient parameters; the outside and inside of the laboratory environments. On the FEA part, SolidWorks Software was used to analyze the heat transfer process inside the 3D models of the mobile solar dryer. The result suggested that the mobile solar dryer was able to maintain an average temperature of 34.2 °C and 60 % relative humidity by only harnessing 180 Watts from 3 bulbs and a 75-Watt industrial exhaust fan.

Performance evaluation of drip irrigation system and water productivity (WP) of Rock Melon grown inside netted rain house shelter

The yield of the crops may be subject to the distribution of water directly to the plant root zone using drippers or emitters. To date, there has not been adequate work to evaluate irrigation system performance and water productivity (WP) specifically for rock melon inside a netted rain house shelter in tropical area. Amongst the problem of this system is the non-functional irrigation components after been used for specific of time, thus reducing the irrigation efficiencies and distribution uniformity. This study evaluates irrigation performance of drip irrigation system and estimates WP of rock melon cultivation in the netted rain house shelter. The results indicate that the operating pressure of the drip irrigation system tested varied from 0.8 to 3.0 psi with a discharge rate between 0.14 and 0.25 Lmin-1. Water application uniformity between laterals varied from 66.06 to 89.72%. The WP of rock melon was around 7.93 kg/m3, which is considerably high and in similar range as demonstrated in previous literature. The field evaluation also reveals that the manipulation of valve controller at lateral based on a few selected scenarios did not provide a significant difference in pressure and discharge at the head, middle, and tail section of the drip irrigation system. Such findings would be a very useful information for a precision water management particularly for rock melon cultivation grown under rain house shelter system.

Bibliometric and visualisation analysis of global research trends on HYDRUS using Scopus search

HYDRUS is one of the popular software packages used for water, heat and solute transport simulation. Although numerous studies on bibliometric analysis were conducted, the bibliometric research and systematic searching strategy on the HYDRUS are rarely explored by scholars. Therefore, the main focus of this study is to explore existing literature on the global research trends of HYDRUS according to bibliometric methods. The data was filtered and extracted from the Scopus database. Bibliometric analysis was performed in different aspects such as yearly publications trends, countries productivity, leading journals and subject areas. Visualisation analysis was deployed using VOSviewer software for collaboration patterns and content analysis to explore networking and emerging topics in HYDRUS. In total, 1903 literature related to HYDRUS publications from the year 1993 until 2020 were retrieved. The quantity of HYDRUS publications has substantially increased for almost three decades. HYDRUS mainly used in the field of Environmental Science (n=1120, 34.1%), Agricultural and Biological Science (n=871, 26.5%) and Earth and Planetary Sciences (n=424, 12.9%). In addition, Agricultural Water Management Journal (Elsevier, Netherlands) is the leading journal in HYDRUS publications. The top three prolific scholars on subject matters are Šimůnek Jirka (H-Index 71, University of California, United States), Martinus Th. van Genuchten (H-Index 82, Utrecht University, Netherlands) and Harry Vereecken (H-Index 65, Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, Germany). The United States, China and Germany, among the most productive country published papers related to HYDRUS. The HYDRUS study is applied in three clusters; media properties cluster, irrigation cluster and groundwater study cluster, with a primary focus on water flow and solute transport modelling. The keywords analysis revealed that the most active research topics were "model", "water", and "parameter" throughout the study period. This bibliometric technique helps researchers identify and understand the specific knowledge domain on the past, current, and emerging research topics.

Performance evaluation of bar load cell sensing system for soil moisture measurement

The open-source microcontroller Arduino is simple to program, erase, and reprogram at any moment. It is an open-source computing platform for creating and programming electronic devices based on basic microcontroller boards. In agriculture, soil moisture content must be monitored soil monitoring continuously to understand the relationship between soil moisture content status and plant water use to minimize under and over-irrigation. Current methods have a short lifespan due to possible corrosion on the electrode. In this project, we introduce a new indirect method for monitoring soil moisture, especially for soil in the container or pot, based on a low-cost bar-based load-cell sensor with an acrylic plate. This study's objectives were to compare the number of bar load cell sensors that affect the soil weight and to formulate a calibration model to predict soil moisture content using soil weight. A model design of 10kg and 5kg bar-based load cell sensors will be used to compare the number of bar load cell sensors affecting the soil weight. The measurement result of each method was very similar and constant for the various positions on the design. There is no significant difference in average soil weight for any technique, and there is no difference in average soil weight for each sample. R2 values and the calibration equation were tabulated in Table 2.

Efficacy of Arduino based low-cost Resistive Sensor in evaluating Soil Moisture from different Soil types collected in the Kelantan-Terengganu plain of Malaysia

This paper presents an experimental study on the effectiveness of using Arduino based low-cost resistive sensors to measure soil moisture content from five different soil types. In this experiment, the soil samples were filled in the vases and arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications. The soil samples from the vases were taken for soil moisture evaluation for 28 days. The experiment began with soil samples at fully saturation condition followed by field capacity condition and finished at the dry condition. The sensors used in this study were calibrated with a gravimetric method by using an oven. The results reveal that the Arduino based low-cost resistive sensor is highly capable of measuring suitable soil moisture content of fine sand, loamy soil, and sandy clay loam soil types. However, this type of sensor has poor performance for sandy loam and clay loam soil types due to the high content of organic matter and low bulk density. The performance of this sensor on peat and wetland soil can be further enhanced by using a distinctively developed empirical formula. The system developed in this work allows employing large-scale soil moisture measurement network for irrigation monitoring and controlling in future research due to its low-cost and great simplicity.

Growth Responses of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) to Selected Plant Growth Regulators

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of two types of plant growth regulators (PGRs) which are gibberellins (GA3) and Paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the growth and photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll) of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) plants. Exogenous applications of GA3 and PBZ with different concentrations (i.e. 20, 40, 80 and 100 mg/L) were sprayed on two-week-old Okra plants under the nursery stage. The control plants were only treated with distilled water. The stem diameter (mm) of treated and control plants was measured weekly. At the end of the experimental period, data on growth characteristics such as plant height (cm), leaf area (cm2) and number of leaves were recorded. The estimation of chlorophyll was measured using the SPAD-502 Chlorophyll Meter. Results showed that the plant morphological characteristics of Okra plants were significantly affected by the application of GA3 and PBZ (P<0.0001). In addition, stem growth (expressed as stem cross-sectional area- mm2) of Okra plants was significantly increased with increasing GA3 concentrations. In contrast, applying PBZ reduced Okra plants' stem growth. This study highlighted the major effects of GA3 and PBZ on the growth of Okra plants when planted under tropical climate conditions.
