X-means clustering for wireless sensor networks

K-means clustering algorithms of wireless sensor networks are potential solutions that prolong the network lifetime. However, limitations hamper these algorithms, where they depend on a deterministic K-value and random centroids to cluster their networks. But, a bad choice of the K-value and centroid locations leads to unbalanced clusters, thus unbalanced energy consumption. This paper proposes X-means algorithm as a new clustering technique that overcomes K-means limitations; clusters constructed using tentative centroids called parents in an initial phase. After that, parent centroids split into a range of positions called children, and children compete in a recursive process to construct clusters. Results show that X-means outperformed the traditional K-means algorithm and optimized the energy consumption.

The sustainability of recycled concrete as green material solution

Nowadays, there are lot of concrete waste were produced from demolition, destruction and others. The usage of concrete is not environmentally friendly due to depletion of reserve natural resources, high energy consumption and disposal issues. Construction debris give a large fraction of solid waste disposal problem, and constitutes the large component. By recycling concrete waste for brick production as replacement the other materials, it can reduce the usage of natural resources and disposal problem that have been occur. The aim of this study to determine the sustainability of the recycled concrete by producing a brick using recycled coarse concrete aggregate at nominal size 10mm. An experiment done by comparing the result of the control specimen using 100% natural sand with specimen that have replaced the sand with recycled concrete aggregate for 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. The result showed the optimum recycled concrete to produce a brick is at 90% replacement of RCCA where the compressive strength and flexural was achieved 9.7MPA and 3.53MPA respectively with 16133.33 kg/m3 of density. The water absorption of green brick is 9.23% and the cost of brick have been reduced from Rm0.26 to 0.20.

Over the past ten years, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have developed into cutting-edge military technology and readily available consumer goods. Unmanned aerial system technology is being used more and more frequently in the construction business today. Drone applications are shifting more and more toward productive remote procedures that can be carried out in a variety of building industry settings. Remote sensing tools for Unmanned Aerial Systems can be used to examine and assess the status of ongoing building construction projects. This research will let building construction professionals see how remote sensing technology may replace human paper-based supervision and an unorganized database for the existing traditional construction job progression method.

The directional antenna tracker for enhancing range communication between UAVs and Ground Control Station

This paper discusses the development of an antenna tracker project focused on evaluating a 2.4 GHz Yagi Uda directional antenna connected to an NRF24L01 transceiver. It employs a gear reduction system for precise yaw and pitch control using two servo motors. The tracker calculates rotation angles using the Haversine formula for coordinates and inverse tangent trigonometry for elevation. Experiments took place in an open area with a stationary Ground Control Station (GCS) and a moving Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to assess performance. The experiments comprised three tests: first, GCS without the Yagi Uda antenna or tracker; second, GCS with the Yagi Uda antenna but without the tracker, positioned along a 30-degree angle away from the transmitter; and third, GCS with both the Yagi Uda antenna and the tracker. The UAV gradually moved away from the tracker in 5-meter intervals until data loss occurred. The test results are based on received coordinates, distance, temperature, humidity, and data loss. Among the three tests, Test 3 demonstrates the best outcome, where the Yagi Uda antenna successfully receives data up to 180 meters before experiencing data loss.

The influence of alkali treatment on date seeds powder reinforced LLDPE composites: Flexural properties and impact strength

In this work, the influences of different concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (3, 6 and 9 wt.%) on the flexural and impact properties of linear low-density polyethylene / date seeds (LLDPE/DS) composites were examined. The LLDPE / DS ratio was fixed at 90/10 wt.% and the size of DS particles was measured at 125 - 250 micro m. The process used to synthesize the composites id extrusion followed by injuction molding process. Results showed that the presence of NaOH particularly at 6 wt.% concentration has improved the flexural and impact properties of the composite. This is due to bonding of the date seeds particles with the LLDPE matrix that reflected posativelly on the mechanical properties of the composite. However, the using of high NaOH concentration (9 wt.%) has shown an opposite trend, the increasing of surface roughness of the fiber after 9% NaOH treatment has reduced the flexibility of the composite and made it stiffer and more rigid, which in turn made it easy to break during mechanical test.

Roof Re-measurement in Building Works Using Un-manned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Application System

The diversities of contractual terms in construction projects leads to a diversified contractual interpretation in one project. In the long term, the contractual discrepancies would result the project suffered from the dispute. Given the circumstances of measurement contracts, which refers to re – measurement or measure and value contracts are normally used when the quantity of the project can’t be describe in the exact amount. In the construction projects that involving complicated design, the difficulty may rose from the initial stage of architectural features. Often, the re-measuring’s fatality occurred when the elements finishes in the building has been over claimed by the contractor. Even so, the uncertainties of client’s instruction have always contributing to the excessive utilization of the fancy finishes in the construction projects. As a result, a dispute ascended due to payments, claim and work done issue. Site re-measurement can be done. However, in regard to almost completed building construction, the site re-measurement may get difficult as human can’t reach the building that has been constructed. Thus, issues on safety and accuracy may followed. Advance technology has provided the ability to implement the building survey without risking of manpower which is using the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Therefore, the research is carried out to identify the attributes of UAV application in roof re – measurement in building works and investigate the implementation of the UAV application. Using the literature search, the attributes of UAV application has been identified and the prototype case study has been selected to investigate the process of UAV application for roof site re-measurement. The results indicated that the utilization of UAV application is feasible as the tools for re – measurement of building works as the issues on the safety and accuracy are safeguarded.

Development of Variable Arm to Control the Manoeuvrability of Quadrotor

This paper introduces the concept of a variable arm for a quadrotor which is able to perform the manoeuvrability of the quadrotor by changing the arm length’s. The variation in arm’s length affects the bending moment generated by the thrust force, resulting in the tilting and movement of the quadrotor. The primary goal of this project is to develop a quadrotor with an adjustable arm length to control its manoeuvrability effectively, thus minimizing the need for additional thrust force during flight control. The study focuses on designing a quadrotor with the capability to extend or retract its arms. The proposed concept relies on altering the bending moment through the variable arm to control the quadrotor's manoeuvrability. A quadrotor equipped with a variable arm was successfully designed and tested, with its performance evaluated in executing agile maneuvers. The experiment demonstrated that the variable arm induced body rotation in the quadrotor, effectively regulating its manoeuvrability and the study validates the potential of the variable arm approach for controlling quadrotor movement.

Experimental Analysis of Flight Altitude for Enhanced Agricultural Drone Spraying Performance

Effective rice field management and the proper application of agricultural chemicals are crucial for ensuring agricultural product quality. These chemicals control weeds and protect against insect pests, which can harm crop yields and quality. This research explores the relationship between the altitude at which agricultural drones spray chemicals, spray uniformity, and chemical dispersion. The study assesses drone operations at heights of 1m, 1.5m, and 2m above hollow cone nozzles in 2.8m/s wind conditions. It aims to evaluate droplet uniformity and dispersion on water-sensitive paper placed on paddy plants, analyzed with ImageJ software. Results show that at 1.5m height, there's a significantly higher average droplet density, with 162.7 deposits/cm² in the upper region and 161.8 deposits/cm² in the lower region. Additionally, coverage is notably increased, at 55.21% for the upper region and 51.4% for the lower region. This research highlights the importance of optimal drone altitude for efficient chemical application in rice fields, improving crop protection and yield.

Towards the implementation of inclusive sustainable cities development as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, the imbalance ratio of existing buildings to new construction became overwhelming challenges. Therefore, refurbishment of existing buildings is considered the possible solution to minimizes the environmental impact and upgrading the performance of an existing building to meet new requirements. However, building refurbishment is well-known as a project that comprehends riskier compared to new building projects which lead to limited applicability in current risk management implementation. Thus, in line with an era of digitization construction of the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0), the traditional risk management needs improvement from a manual basis to magnifying efficiency using integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) application. BIM is defined as an advanced technology that assists construction players to produce, communicate, and analyse building models by providing visual tools and a set of data. Therefore, the objective of this research is to identify the potential building refurbishment risk categories and to determine the most critical project lifecycle phase in implementing the BIM applications in order to mitigate the potential building refurbishment project risk. Also, to discover the relationship strength between these two variables. The quantitative method is applied by using a questionnaire form to the certified BIM experts. This research contributes a solid understanding and useful guideline for future practice reference and improvement within the Building Refurbishment Project.

Application of Hybrid Fibre Concrete As Advanced Material for Concrete Water Tank Construction

The challenge of construction and the complexity of civil engineering systems, especially in the construction of water tanks, are catching people's attention around the world. Concrete, which is a priority feature and a mandatory used material, must have a very high strength and an acceptable degree of workability and properties. Efforts are being made in the field of concrete production to create and expand these mixtures of unusual characteristics and behaviors. The used of the hybrid fibre concrete in the concrete wall can reduce the costing factor in terms of constructions and maintenances beside that the quality assurance is highlighted. In addition, the sustainability in the water tank construction in Malaysia can be achieved using the advanced material in the construction.
