Statistical optimization of adsorption process for removal of Methylene blue using Durio Zibethinus Murr shell

Adsorption of methylene blue (MB) was investigated using physically prepared Durio Zibethinus Murr shell activated carbon (DZMAC). Response surface methodology (RSM) statistical technique was used to optimise the preparation conditions: activation power, activation time, and CO2 flow, with the percentage of MB dye removal and DZMAC yield as the targeted responses. Based on the central composite design (CCD), two empirical models were developed and validated by applying ANOVA analysis incorporating interaction effects of three variables using RSM to the two responses. The optimum conditions for preparing DZMAC for adsorption of MB dye were found as follows: activation power of 666-Watt, activation time of 2.83 minutes, and CO2 flow of 100 cm3, which resulted in 70% of MB dye removal and 25.21% of DZMAC yield. Experimental results obtained agreed satisfactorily well with the model predictions.

Influence of Worker's Attitude and Communication Skill towards Safety Performance in Construction Site

The construction site is one of the most hazardous working places with numerous sources of hazards and potentially high risk to deals with. Typically, the main sources of hazards are unsafe condition and unsafe act by the human. Eventually, both sources related to human errors which potentially have an effect on the performance of the site. To reveals the underlying, this study aims to determine the influential factors that governed the success of safety performance of a construction site. The study involved a self-administered three-part questionnaire among the construction personnel. Part A measures the workers' attitude and safety performance while Part B on communication skills. The respondents randomly selected from construction sites range from school building and infrastructure renovation. The sample size was 113. From the survey, it was found that the most influential factor was the worker's attitude and followed closely by communication skills. Suggestion and recommendations on equipment design and improved work practices and procedures to improve efficiency and productivity of construction workers were proposed. Management was urged to get their workers better informed about safety matters.

Manufacturing of cast in situ ultra high performance fibre reinforced concrete (uhpfrc)-Workability, Tensile and Compressive Strength

The aim of this article is to share on the manufacturing process of Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) without heat curing or steam curing, hence, it makes UHPFRC possible to be used for in situ application. The common materials used in numerous previous studies were used in this work to produce UHPFRC: Cement type CEM I, fine sand, silica fume, water and third generation high range water reducer. Three tests were conducted, i.e. Compression test and slump flow test and tensile test. The targeted slump flow is in the range of 600 mm to 750 mm, minimum targeted compressive strength and tensile strength test is 115 MPa and 10 MPa, respectively. In addition, the UHPFRC must exhibit strain hardening properties. As a result, this study proposes the mix proportion of the above mentioned material used to produce UHPFRC which is suitable to be utilized for in situ application.

Mechanical, Durability and Rheology Properties of Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) with Low Cement Content

This current study attempts to investigate the mechanical, durability as well as rheology properties of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) with low cement content and using coarse aggregate. The cement content used in UHPC mix in current study was 800 kg/m3. The slump flow, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and water penetration tests were conducted to determine the workability, mechanical and durability properties of explored UHPC mixture. The test results show that the above properties were exceptional and comparable with other UHPC mixtures.

Cross section optimization of plane truss among different spans

Cross sectional areas optimization is to be implemented to study the influence of the cross section shape on the optimum truss weight. By the aid of analysis and design engines with advanced finite element analysis that is the steel design software STAAD. Four rolled steel sections (angle, tube, channel, and pipe) which are used in industrial roof trusses are applied for comparison. Many previous studies, use the areas of cross sections as design variables without highlight to the shape of cross section at the start of the process, consequently the result area will be adequate if the designer choose the effective shape than others. Results of this research show that the chosen cross section shape has a significant impact on the optimum truss weight for same geometry of truss type under the same circumstances of loading and supports.

APPLICATION OF NATURAL FIBER FOR SHORT TERM STABILIZATION OF MARINE CLAY SLOPE

Existence of marine clay in civil engineering field leading to further investigation on the properties as well as the method of stabilization. The aim of this study is to investigate the shear strength parameter of marine clay slope stabilized with kenaf fiber. Laboratory testing has been conducted to determine the marine clay and stabilized marine clay properties and its characteristic by using soil classification of particle size distribution, specific gravity, Atterberg limit and unconfined compression test. The result shows that the shear strength of marine clay reinforced with kenaf fiber is improved by increasing the percentage of kenaf fiber mixed into marine clay soil. The safety factor obtained from slope stability analysis shows that addition of kenaf fiber to the marine clay soil improves the marine clay slope stability. By adding 5% and 10% of kenaf fiber improves safety factor to more than 1.2 as required for most of temporary slope construction.

Development of Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC) using crushed waste clay brick as alternative aggregate

In housing construction, concrete are materials that will be used extensively to produce a wall structure that accommodates the load. However, the problem is the cost of producing by using natural resources, as it is a major mineral is difficult to find sufficient natural aggregate supply sources since high demand. Therefore, the lack of natural aggregate and its increasing demand leads to an alternative to be developed to replace the natural aggregate. This study investigated the effect of utilization of waste clay brick in Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) on its properties and performance. The waste clay brick (WBS) was replaced as fine aggregate in SCC from 10% to 30%. As the amount of waste clay brick in SCC increases, its workability and also Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) quality decreases while the water absorption increases. The highest average compressive strength achieved was 43.3 MPa and for splitting tensile strength was 12 MPa respectively; both at 25% of WCB replacement. All test results showed that the optimum percentage to replace waste clay brick in SCC is 25% and it has the potential to be replaced as fine aggregate in SCC.

The influence of integrated management system (IMS) on innovation performance in Malaysia construction industry

Globally, the construction industry has become a complicated, critical, and exponentially developed leads to increase difficulties and required more innovative and better management system. This leads the organization to find a better solution to their management approach. The international standards in quality, environment, safety, security, supply chain, etc. have been combined to form a comprehensive system called integrated management system (IMS). By implementing a management system standard, organizations can benefit from global management experience and good practice, but the issues arise on the success factors and how they affect the performance of the company. There had been plenty of researches son IMS elsewhere, but this research was focusing on the construction industry in Malaysia in term of innovation performance. The approach is quantitative by disseminating questionnaire to the construction players in the northern region of Peninsular of Malaysia. The IMS's attributes, i.e. integration of IMS and integrated audits, are found to have positive relationship toward the innovation performance of an organization. The model moderately explained 52.8% proven that the attributes should be the focal point of the organization to increase their success factors in boosting their performance, especially in its innovation.

Improving sustainability of road construction by partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with crushed brick and reclaimed asphalt pavement

Reducing dependent on naturally sourced materials is among the priority in improving the sustainability of road construction. The subbase layer which provides strength and stability across the road profile, comprised mainly of natural aggregates. This study aims to explore the feasibility of partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with 20% Crushed Brick (CB) and 20 to 50% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test and Constant Head Permeability tests were carried out to determine the effect of this partial replacement on the geotechnical properties of the subbase layer. The results obtained denotes that the combination of 20% CB and 50% RAP is the optimum partial replacement of natural aggregates in subbase layer with CB and RAP. The use of CB further complements RAP in improving the stiffness and compressibility of the subbase layer while contributing significantly toward sustainability in road construction.
