The effect of additives to the densification of natural hydroxyapatite

The effect of different additives to the microstructure and phase properties of compact natural hydroxyapatite was studied. Compact HA was fabricated from HA powder obtained from bovine bones via calcinations and grinding processes. The sintering temperatures 1150oC and 1200oC were applied to increase the densification behaviour of natural HA. In this study, the effects of MgO and BaO to the microstructure and mechanical properties of natural HA were also being investigated. From the result, BaO increased the densification and microstructure developments of sintered natural HA. The average grain size distribution of 1.5μm can be clearly seen from the microstructure at temperature 1200oC for specimen doped BaO. However the density of specimen doped MgO give lower value of 57 % compared to pure natural HA. Thus, from the microstructure results, the MgO decreased the sintering rate of natural HA. On the other hand, the BaO increased the sinterability of specimen.

Fabrication of calcium phosphate coating on pure magnesium substrate via simple chemical conversion coating: surface properties and corrosion performance evaluations

The main objective of the current work was to fabricate calcium phosphate (CaP) coating on 99.9% purity magnesium, Mg substrate through simple chemical conversion method and evaluated the surface properties and corrosion performance of the coated substrates. The chemical conversion method was done by immersing the samples inside primary phosphating bath and followed by secondary treatment in alkaline solutions. The coated samples from the primary (PRI) and secondary (SEC) coating treatment were analyzed from morphological, topographical, and phase analysis aspects. The corrosion behaviour of the coatings inside simulated body fluid was assessed by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The PRI and SEC coated were composed of dicalcium phosphate dehydrate (DCPD) and hydroxyapatite (HA), respectively. Both of the coatings improved the corrosion resistance of the Mg substrate. The corrosion potentials, Ecorr of the coated samples becomes nobler compared to the bare substrates. EIS shows that the polarization resistance, Rp is improved about 40 and 2 times fold for PRI and SEC compared to the uncoated samples. Furthermore, PRI shows better corrosion resistance compared to SEC due to lower porosity along with thicker and better coating coverage.

Investigate the liberation of copper from waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)

Nowadays the waste PCBs increasing sharply proportionally the number of personal computers which is 5.7 million in 2005 and the predict amounts, it will be increase to 11.5 Million in 2010 (Unit Perancangan Ekonomi, 2006). From that figure it shows that, computer or Printed Circuit Board (PCB) which is one of the electric and electronic components may cause environmental problems during the waste management phase if it is not properly pre treated. Considering of the environmental problem, recycling of waste PCBs is an important subject not only from the treatment for waste but also from the recovery of valuable materials. The studies are focused on liberation size of copper in waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Waste PCBs sample were cut, dry crushed and ground down to assemble the criteria of liberation particle size of samples and sieved with the chosen size fraction. Samples were dissolved into aqua regia solution and analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) to determine the presence of valuable metals in solution that consists in samples. As well, light microscope was used to determine the degree of liberation of copper from PCBs particles. As the result it shows that Cu element (9.97%) is the highest metal composition in PCBs and it is very worth to recycle. At particles size 300 μm, it been seen from microscope that Cu particles start to fully liberated with metal and non-metal element.

Synthesis and process evaluation of calcium phosphate coatings depositions on pure magnesium via simple chemical conversion method

Simple chemical conversion has been employed in order to coat calcium phosphates (CaP) on magnesium (Mg) substrate. The Mg substrates were coated in a primary phosphating bath before secondary treated with an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, NaOH. In this paper, the fabrication process of the coatings via simple chemical conversion method were discussed and evaluated in terms of electrochemical, phase analysis, and microstructural aspects. XRD diffractogram confirmed that the primary coating composed of dicalcium phosphate dehydrates (DCPD) and after the secondary treatment, the DCPD transformed into more stable hydroxyapatite, HA. The microstructural observations show that the coating is composed of flower-like shape crystallites. Besides, the potential-time curves of both primary and secondary coated samples suggests that the minimum deposition time for better coverage of the coatings is 30 minutes.
