Effect of heat sink design on the thermal characteristic in computational fluid dynamics analysis

The thermal management in the electronic device or system using the heat sink is important to ensure the device or system operating under the allowable temperature. The present study aims to investigate the thermal characteristic (i.e., temperature distribution) of the various heat sink designs via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The electronic cooling process of the heat sink is carried out via CFD software. The temperature distribution of the various heat sink designs (i.e., plate fin, circular pin fin and rectangular fin) was analyzed and compared. The CFD analysis revealed the plate fin heat sink has lowest temperature distribution on the fin region. High temperature distribution was observed on the pin fin heat sink. The non-uniform temperature distribution was attributed by the direction of inlet airflow, whereas the low temperature was found in the region that close to the inlet airflow. Thus, the research findings indicated the design of heat sink significantly affects the temperature distribution during the electronic cooling process.

A Novel Green Technology Kaffir Lime Extract as Lizard Repellent

The ubiquity of lizard in homes and has caused huge problem to human. They are one of the very important agents to transmit Salmonella that cause food poisoning towards human being. Through this research the potential of Kaffir lime peel toward lizard was reported. The process to produce Kaffir lime extract is hydrodistillation extraction method. The repellency test of essential oil will be assess at different concentration (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). The duration of observation will be test from 3 to 6 hour duration. The results has shown that the concentration up to 50% and above of essential oil from Kaffir lime peel extraction may reflect the lizards in a state of discomfort.

Experimental and computational evaluations of the mechanical stresses of banana trunk fibre-reinforced epoxy resin composite in coffee table application

The banana plant including the trunk is normally disposed after it has produced fruits once in its lifetime and becoming unproductive. Herbicide injection and burning using kerosene are the examples of current disposing method. Those methods are unfavourable owing to bad effects to the environment. Therefore, the unproductive banana trunk through its fibre properties, has a high potential to be used as composite in saving the environment. Three tensile test specimens were prepared with two of them have different length of banana fibres – shorter and longer than 0.5 mm, whilst another specimen has no fibres. The elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and vertical load of 2 GPa, 0.3, and 981 N, respectively, were applied towards numerical models. The results exhibited that the composite with short banana fibre length promoted encouraging maximum and break stress values. Besides, the properties of the composite are well appropriate to be applied in furniture making as satisfactory stress value recorded in the computational analysis.

Investigation on delamination factor (Fd) of kenaf fibre reinforced plastic composite materials under drilling process

Natural Fibre Reinforced Plastic Composite material that the Kenaf Fibre are used to reinforce to the polymer matrix to improve its mechanical properties. It is environmentally friendly and low cost as compare to non-biodegradable material. It is also widely used in Aerospace, Automotive and Furniture industry. Drilling process plays an important role in fabrication in these industries. However, some defects often occur on the Natural Fibre Reinforced Plastic Composite during drilling process. The major damage is delamination that are found on the surface of the composite in drilling process. This damage reduces the mechanical properties of the composite. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate and minimize the delamination by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Cutting speed and feed rate are found significant to delamination in this study. The higher the previous researchers investigate the cutting speed with low feed rate, the lower the delamination. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is high cutting speed with low feed rate improve the mechanical quality of composite.

Fabrication of polypropylene/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber/kenaf core composites: Effect of polypropylene maleic anhydride as compatibilizer

The fabrication of polypropylene (PP)/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)/kenaf core (KC) composites were investigated. Tensile and morphological properties of composites were evaluated with the addition of polypropylene maleic anhydride (PPMAH) as a compatibilizer Five compositions of PP/NBR/KC with varied NBR loading (0–60 phr) were prepared with the addition of constant PPMAH ratio at 5phr. All the materials were melts mixed using a heated two-roll mill at temperature 180 °C and speed of 50 rpm. PP/NBR/KC compounds were compressed into 1 mm thin sheet by using a hot press machine and cut into a dumbbell shape specimen. The tensile test was conducted according to ASTM D 638 using a Universal Testing Machine. The results indicated that tensile strength slightly decreased with increasing NBR loading. However, it is interesting to observe that PP/NBR/KC composites with PPMAH compatibilizer have better tensile strength. Almost 43% improvement resulted for PP/NBR/KC/PPMAH composites with ratio 70/30/10. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, composites with PPMAH compatibilizer show good attachment of KC filler with PP/NBR matrices.

Phase formation and microstructure analyses of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ-BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95composite material prepared by solid state mixing method

A composite material of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ-BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95 (LSC-BCZY) was prepared by mixing sol-gel derived LSC and BCZY powders in different weight percentage (wt%) ratio of LSC to BCZY (LSC:BCZY). The prepared composite powders were denoted as S1 (30:70), S2 (50:50) and S3 (70:30). The powders were characterized by an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and porosity analyzer and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer. XRD analysis confirmed that all of the powders were not pure enough due to the presence of impurity phases such as barium carbonate (BaCO3) and strontium carbonate (SrCO3) and unknown phases. S1 powder has the highest amount of impurity phases (81.19 %) and the largest BET surface area (4.82 m2 g−1). All of the powders formed typical clump-like network structure as proven by SEM analysis. EDX analysis revealed that the elemental compositions of La, Sr and Zr were deviated from their nominal mole fractions in all powders due to the Zr-rich clusters formation. The results indicate that the formation of pure and homogenous LSC-BCZY composite powder prepared by solid state mixing method requires further modification and improvement of the preparation method.

Blood vessel detection monitoring system and mobile notification for diabetic retinopathy diagnosis

Disease diagnosis based on retinal image analysis is very popular in order to detect a few critical diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, high blood pressure, cancer and glaucoma. The important part of the retinal is a blood vessel. Besides, the blood vessel study plays an important part in different medical areas such as ophthalmology, oncology, and neurosurgery. The significance of the vessel analysis was helped by the continuous overview in clinical studies of new medical technologies intended for improving the visualization of vessels. In this paper, a new blood vessel detection based on a combination of Kirsch’s templates and Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) was proposed. The main objective of this study is to improve the detection result of FCM and achieved more effective performance compared to the Kirsch’s templates result. The proposed method experimented on 20 images is utilized namely from Digital Retina Images for Vessel Extraction (DRIVE) dataset. The resulting images are compared with the benchmark images based on a few image quality assessment (IQA) such as accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The total average of accuracy is 92.64%, while sensitivity and specificity obtained was 95.73% and 60.45% respectively. The three parameters of the IQA will then be displayed in a column on the GUI. The second part of the system is for the mobile notification system to send SMS to a mobile phone. In order for the user to obtain the image analysis results, there must be a notification system on the mobile phone. By using the GSM module integrated with Arduino Uno, notification regarding image analysis will be sent to the mobile phone.

Multi Response Optimization of Injection Molding Parameters for Artificial Phalanx Bone Using Response Surface Methodology

Unintended features of the injected part may affect the quality of the product. The present study aims to optimize the injection molding parameters and minimize the shrinkage and sink marks for artificial phalanx bone of the index finger via response surface methodology (RSM). The injection molding process was numerically simulated by the software. The combination of the process parameters was designed by Central Composite Design (CCD) in RSM. Three important process parameters were considered, which are melting temperature, cooling time and injection pressure. Meanwhile, two responses (i.e., volumetric shrinkage and sink marks) were considered in the multi-objective optimization. Regression model, ANOVA analysis and perturbation plot analysis were also highlighted in this study. The simulation results revealed two most significant factors towards the responses and the optimum setting of process parameters were recommended to minimize the shrinkage and sink marks of the injected artificial phalanx bone. The optimum injection molding process parameters are 240 Â°C of melting temperature, 40 s of cooling time and 12 MPa of injection pressure. The optimized results are expected to be used as the reference in the fabrication of the artificial phalanx bone via injection molding.

Influence of different materials on the mechanical aspects in the design of cyclone gasifier

Cyclone gasifier is used as the energy conversion system for the biomass. The design and material selection for the cyclone gasifier is important, which affect the strength of the gasifier during the operation. This research aims to investigate the effect of the various materials to the mechanical aspects (i.e., stress, strain and displacement) of the cyclone gasifier. The mechanical aspects analysis is carried out by using the finite element (FE) based software. The stress, strain and displacement of the cyclone gasifier’s structure was analyzed for various stainless steel materials (i.e., ferritic (FSS), AISI 316, 1023 CSS, 201 ASS and AISI 4130). The finite element analysis revealed the use of 201 ASS experienced highest stress (221 MPa). Lowest strain and displacement were found on 201 ASS and 1023 CSS, respectively. These research findings are expected to be used as the reference for the engineer in the material selection process for the design and fabrication of cyclone gasifier.
