Effect of zinc addition on the performance of aluminium alloy sacrificial anode for marine application

In this work, the effect of zinc addition on the performance of aluminum-based sacrificial anode in seawater was investigated. The parameters used in assessing the performance of the cast anodes are anodic efficiency, protection efficiency and polarized potential. The content of zinc in the anodes was varied after die casting. The alloys produced were tested as sacrificial anode for the protection of mild steel for marine application at room temperature. Factors such as reactivity of zinc particles in the seawater, corrosion activity during the period of experiment, pH of seawater and the electronegativity potential of zinc were collected for analysis. Overall findings shows addition of zinc increases rate of corrosion to the sacrificial anode and the protection offered by the sacrificial anodes measured and collected in PIT shows the seawater react to sacrificial anode and no porosity reaction between the anodes. The microstructure showed the intermetallic structures of β-phase which breakdown the alumina passive film, thus enhancing the anode efficiency.

Mechanical Design and Analysis of Safety Medical Syringe for Needlestick Injury Prevention

The occurrence of needlestick injury especially among healthcare workers and patients is really significant since long time ago. Apart from improper syringe usage management, the reuse syringe components and unsafe sharp wastes management also contribute to the incidence of unexpected injuries. It was reported that one of every 250 accidental needlesticks may result in the infection of human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV), Hepatitis B (HBV), or Hepatitis C (HCV). Based on the user needs identification, promising safety mechanism and handling as well as single use of the syringe are of major interests. Thus, the aim of the study was to design and develop a new syringe that completed with safety and ergonomic features to avoid the related injuries. Primary and secondary data had been collected through interview, observation and journal articles with a series of design concept development, three-dimensional (3-D) modelling, and computational technical evaluation stages were then undertaken. A number of mock-ups and prototype of the product was produced via rapid prototyping process which is 3-D printing approach using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as the material. The results showed that the proposed design of safety syringe is satisfactory in terms of its structural strength and working principle. Further enhancement may be necessary to strengthen the role of the material and needle cap in compensating the function of the syringe.

Thermal and Static Properties Investigation of Different Intake Manifold Materials to Lower Air Intake Temperature for Improved Engine Performance

Formula SAE competition is targeted at students who are interested in designing and developing a Formula-type race car. Rules were imposed to restrict the car’s performance for safety besides encouraging problem-solving skills. One such rule is the requirement of a 20mm restrictor inserted between the carburettor and intake manifold to reduce the air intake. With a constricted airflow creating a bottleneck effect, less air will be provided to the engine for combustion, consequently reducing engine efficiency. The purpose of this project is to overcome this problem despite the restriction imposed by the rules. This is done by choosing an intake manifold material that provides a low air temperature while withstanding the stress and vibrations from the engine. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software was used to conduct the static, thermal and modal analysis of Aluminium Alloy 6063, Gray Cast Iron, Fibreglass Epoxy and Carbon Fibre Epoxy to choose the material that produces lower intake air temperature while maintaining high strength. Carbon fibre epoxy was found to provide the best durability against static stress while maintaining a lower intake air temperature compared to the other materials tested.
