Mechanical and morphology of interwoven Kenaf/PALF hybrid composites at different fibre ratio

As the extension to the research involving woven and natural fibre hybrid composites, this study characterise the mechanical properties of natural fibre hybrid composites with different fibre ratio. Plain weaved kenaf/PALF composites with fibre weight ratio of 10/10, 15/15 and 20/20 are fabricated via the hand lay up technique using epoxy as the matrix. Tensile and flexural test are performed according to ASTM D3039 and ASTM D790 standards, respectively. Morphological structure of the fracture specimens were examine using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). As a result, the 15/15 fibre ratio composite had the highest tensile and flexural strength. Addition of kenaf fibre improve the mechanical properties of the composites and increase the potential of PALF fibre as filler for future natural fibre applications.

Effect of water absorption on the mechanical properties of hybrid interwoven cellulosic-cellulosic fibre reinforced epoxy composites

The absorption behaviour of water and its effect on the tensile and flexural properties of interwoven cellulosic fibres were investigated. Hybrid composites consisting of interwoven kenaf/jute and kenaf/hemp yarns were prepared by an infusion process that used epoxy as the polymer matrix. The water absorption characteristics of the fibres were obtained by immersing the composite samples in tap water at room temperature, until reaching their water content saturation point. The dry and water-immersed woven and interwoven hybrid composite samples were subjected to tensile and flexural tests. To study the effect of water penetration in the fibre/matrix interface, fractured samples were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The study shows that the mechanical and water-resistant properties of the kenaf, jute, and hemp fibres were improved through hybridization. However, as a result of water penetrating the fibre/matrix interface, longer water-immersion times reduced the tensile and flexural strength of the composites.

Damage self-sensing and strain monitoring of glass-reinforced epoxy composite impregnated with graphene nanoplatelet and multiwalled carbon nanotubes

The damage self-sensing and strain monitoring of glass-reinforced epoxy composites impregnated with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated. Hand lay-up and vacuum bagging methods were used to fabricate the composite. Mechanical stirrer, high shear mixer, and ultrasonic probe were used to mix the nanofiller and epoxy. The loadings of the nanofiller used were 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5 wt%. The specimens were tested using in situ electromechanical measurements under mechanical tests. The results show that the type and weight content of the nanofiller affect the electrical properties, damage self-sensing behaviour, and mechanical properties of the composites. The electrical conductivity of the GNP-glass and MWCNT-glass composites increased with nanofiller content. The tensile and flexural strengths of the composite improved with the addition of GNP and MWCNT nanofillers from 0.5 to 3 wt%. The 3 wt% nanofiller loading for GNP and MWCNT produces better mechanical–electrical performance. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the dispersion of GNP and MWCNT nanofillers in the composites.

Water absorption behaviour and its effect on the mechanical properties of hybrid interwoven cellulosic fibre composites

With aim to fulfill the public need that eager for ‘green product’, natural based fibres started to receive attention to substitute synthetic fibres as reinforcement in composites. Natural fibres is relatively cheap, easy to get, non-toxic, non-abrasive, less harmful to human health and possessed high specific strength and modulus which make them the perfect choice to reduce the dependence towards the petroleum based fibres. As the extension to the research involving woven and natural fibre hybrid composites, this study investigated the water absorption behaviour and its effect on the mechanical properties of hybrid cellulosic fibre composites. Hybrid composites consists of interwoven kenaf/jute and kenaf/hemp yarns were prepared by infusion process using epoxy as the matrix. Woven kenaf, jute and hemp composites were also prepared for comparison. Water absorption test were conducted according to ASTM D590 standard by immersing the composite samples in tap water at room temperature until the water content reach saturation. Dry and water immersed samples of both woven and interwoven hybrid composites then were subjected to tensile and flexural tests according to ASTM D638 and ASTM D790, respectively. Fractured portion of the samples were examined using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to observe the effect of water absorption towards the fiber/matrix interface. Water uptake was rapidly increased at the beginning and getting slower until reach saturation at 1400 hours of immersion time. Among individual woven composites, woven kenaf composite had the highest water uptake and through hybridization with jute and hemp fibres, water resistance properties of kenaf fibre were improved by 46 and 64%. At both, dry and wet condition, mechanical properties of interwoven hybrid composites was found to be greater than their individual woven composites. In dry condition, tensile and flexural strength of interwoven kenaf/jute hybrid composite were 11 and 22% higher than woven kenaf composite and 16 and 39% greater than woven jute composite. For dry samples of interwoven kenaf/hemp hybrid composite, increment of 4 and 17% over woven kenaf composite and 9 and 33% over woven hemp composite were recorded for their tensile and flexural strength. Similar as the dry samples, increase of tensile and flexural strength was also observed for the water immersed samples of the interwoven hybrid composites. Amount of water uptake increased as the immersion time increased and reduced the strength and modulus (tensile and flexural) of the water immersed samples. Tensile strength of woven kenaf, jute, hemp, interwoven kenaf/jute and kenaf/hemp hybrid composites at their saturation state were reduced by 75, 69, 67, 72 and 69% over their strength at dry condition. Following the similar sequence, flexural strength of the saturated samples also reduced by 73, 64, 57, 69 and 67% than the dry condition samples. Those reductions attributed by debonding, matrix cracking, and delamination as shown through the FESEM images.

Methane Gas Production from different composition of Food Waste and Chicken Manure

High carbohydrate content in food waste is one of the characteristic suitable acted as a co-substrate for fermentation to produce methane gas. In this study, co-digestion of chicken manure (CM) and food waste (FW) was used for fermentation process in methane gas production. The different effects of the independent variables (ratio, pH and temperature) is the most significant parameters of methane gas fermentation of CM and FW were investigated. Based on the analytical study showed a good fit between the experimental and the predicted data as the R2 values of 0.991 with methane yield to be 537 mL CH4/g VS at ratio 80:20 (CM:FW); temperature 35 C; and initial pH 7.11 in 20 days of fermentation. The experiment was then performed based on optimized parameters of pH, temperature and ratio at the highest yield of methane obtained from optimum parameters. After optimization, the result showed that the pH 7.11 at 35 C temperature and the ratio of 80:20 with methane production yield of 1560.5 mL CH4/g VS for the 21 days of digestion process.

Dielectric, Electrical Conductivity, and Thermal Stability Studies of Cellulosic Fibers Reinforced Polylactic Acid Composites

In this study, biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) composites were reinforced with three different natural fibers, were bamboo (BF), sugarcane (SF), and banana pseudostem (BPF) fibers, and prepared at different loadings (10, 20, and 30 wt.%). The solvent casting particulate leaching method was implemented to produce porous composites, and salt was used as the particulate material. The dielectric properties of the PLA/BF, PLA/SF, and PLA/BF composites were studied for different loadings of cellulosic fibers. The composites were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the PLA composites with 30 wt.% filler content were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). According to the dielectric tests, all PLA/BF, PLA/SF, and PLA/BPF composites have low dielectric constants and dielectric loss. The PLA/BF composites exhibited the highest dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and electrical conductivity, followed by the PLA/BF and PLA/SF composites. The morphology of the composites showed their porous structure. The FTIR spectra showed the main constituents presented in the composites, and the PLA/BF showed higher thermal stability than the other composites.

Design and development of driving external support for lower limb disable patients

The driver who lower limb disabled patients were used the hand control to drive. The hand control was fixed permanently on the pedals. Thus, their family cannot share the car with them. Hence, there are several ways to innovate the hand control become portable product. This study was undertaken to investigate the characteristic driving behaviour of lower limb disabled patient yet to establish the design driving external support that was portable by using hand control. There are many types of mechanism that was used to upgrade the product function compare to existing product. The materials mainly used steel as the materials of hand control stick. The fabrication process was used two weeks to done the prototype. Using a novel upgrading of portable hand control may help the disable patient easily use the fingers and hand, without using any tools. This product also can be refit in others car. The innovation of mechanism assists patients can share their car with their family members.
