Investigation of the potential of Cyperus alternifolius in the phytoremediation of palm oil mill effluent

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology nowadays due to demand in environmental sustainability which requires cost-effective solutions in terms of capital and operational cost. The treatment gain attention due to their potential in wastewater treatment especially in organics, nutrients, and heavy metal removal of domestics, agricultural, and industrial wastewater treatment. Plant functions in phytoremediation make the plant selection as an essential element. The plant should have the ability to tolerate with the toxic effluent and able to uptake the contaminant. Cyperus alternifolius (umbrella grass) was chosen as aquatic plant due to the ability to tolerance in municipal and industrial effluent sources with strong and dense root systems. Thus, the objectives of this study are to determine the potential and effectiveness of Cyperus alternifolius in the palm oil mill effluent treatment especially in the removal of organics (COD), nutrients (NH3-N and TP) and suspended solid. The batch experiment was run using Cyperus alternifolius to determine their potential of aerobic pond effluent for 21 days of treatment. Cyperus alternifolius treatment shows the great removal of COD and TSS with 96% and 91%, respectively at the end of 21 days of treatment. Nutrients removal achieved the maximum removal of 92% NH3-N and 99% TP shows after 11 days of treatment and percentage slowly decrease until the end of 21 days of treatment. Cyperus alternifolius had shown potential in the palm oil mill effluent treatment and can be combined with ponding treatment to enhance to water quality prior discharge.

Drying performance evaluation of a commercial batch mixed-flow seed drying system

Information on the performance of commercial grain dryers in Malaysia especially for paddy seed drying in terms of published reports are still lacking. This study was therefore undertaken to evaluate the performance of a commercial, mixed-flow, batch type grain dryer at Loji Pemprosesan Benih Padi Sah (A) Telok Chengai, Kedah. Five type of performance indices under three different fan configurations were studied, namely drying efficiency (DE), heat utilization factor (HUF), effective heat efficiency (EHE), coefficient of performance (COP) and specific energy consumption (SEC). From the results obtained, the average values for the performance indices for the seed dryer measured as DE. HUF, EHE and COP were found to range between 0.521 to 0.596, 0.695 to 0.708, 0.477 to 0.515 and 0.292 to 0.305 respectively. Depending on the fan's configurations, the SEC values registered by the dryer ranged between 5.677 to 6.896 MJ/kg water removed. This study also showed that different performance indices are suited for different conditions of the drying. As for an instance, HUF, EHE and COP are more suited for in-field drying evaluation while DE is more suited for a comprehensive evaluation of a dryer. SEC, on the other hand provides the most comprehensible results among the methods.

Bioconversion of agro-wastes by Black Soldier Fly larvae

The utilization of Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL) in agro-waste bioconversion is becoming popular due to its potential to reduce waste volume and produce protein and lipids from the larvae. This research was carried out to evaluate the capacity of BSFL to biologically convert different types of selected plant and animal-based agro-wastes. The assessment of the BSFL growth (diameter, length, and weight) was recorded. Results indicated that BSFL were capable of digesting goat manure, banana, and cabbage, though the respective digestion rates differed. The waste reduction capacity ranged from 21.82 % - 36.74 %, with the highest achieved with banana and the lowest was goat manure. The highest growth rates of BSFL in terms of weight, diameter, and length were achieved by digesting cabbage waste, followed by banana and goat manure. There is a high potential to utilize BSFL in agro-waste management due to its eco-friendly and sustainable method.
