Influence of Carrying Unstable Load on Thoracic Kinematics While Walking on a Curved Path

This study investigated the effect of carrying unstable load on thoracic kinematics while walking on a curved path. Three-dimensional spinal kinematics were defined as the rotations between thoracic and the Virtual laboratory coordinate system (Tho/ Virtual lab) which consisted of lateral bending (LB), flexion/extension (FE) and axial rotation (AR) in the frontal plane, sagittal plane and transverse plane, respectively. Eight healthy young adults (4 males and 4 females) performed loads carrying and walking on one meter radius curved path. Spinal kinematics was determined at the left leg heel strike and just before the right toe off during the curved path walking. As a result, a significant main effect of load intensity was found only on FE of (Tho/Virtual lab) at both left leg heel strike and right leg toe off. The study concluded that an increase in the load intensity of unstable load from 10% of body weight likely to generate more thorax extension.

Gait classification using Mahalanobis–Taguchi system for health monitoring systems following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

In this paper, a gait patterns classification system is proposed, which is based on Mahalanobis–Taguchi System (MTS). The classification of gait patterns is necessary in order to ascertain the rehab outcome among anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients. (1) Background: One of the most critical discussion about when ACLR patients should return to work (RTW). The objective was to use Mahalanobis distance (MD) to classify between the gait patterns of the control and ACLR groups, while the Taguchi Method (TM) was employed to choose the useful features. Moreover, MD was also utilised to ascertain whether the ACLR group approaching RTW. The combination of these two methods is called as Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS). (2) Methods: This study compared the gait of 15 control subjects to a group of 10 subjects with laboratory. Later, the data were analysed using MTS. The analysis was based on 11 spatiotemporal parameters. (3) Results: The results showed that gait deviations can be identified successfully, while the ACLR can be classified with higher precision by MTS. The MDs of the healthy group ranged from 0.560 to 1.180, while the MDs of the ACLR group ranged from 2.308 to 1509.811. Out of the 11 spatiotemporal parameters analysed, only eight parameters were considered as useful features. (4) Conclusions: These results indicate that MTS can effectively detect the ACLR recovery progress with reduced number of useful features. Variation of Stress Intensity Factor and Strain Energy Release Rate in Human Cortical Bone Using Finite Element Analysis

Finite element analysis is an alternative way to study human fracture behaviour as the technology is a leading innovation in biomechanics field. The aim of this study is to analyse the strain intensity factor and strain energyrelease rate when three-point bending test and tensile test were applied on a two-dimensional cortical bone model developed and tested using finite element software, Ansys. K values gained from Data Extrapolation Method (DEM) through Ansys for three-point bending test were compared with CINT method, Hiroshi Tada’s and Allan F. Bower’s theoretical expression while K values from DEM were only been compared with CINT method for tensile test. Meanwhile, J-integral values were obtained through CINT method using Ansys and analysed with different crack-to-width ratios and loads. As a result, stress intensity factor increased as crack-to-width ratio increased and strain energy release rate also increased as crack-to-width ratio and loads increased. Nucleus detection on pap smear images for cervical cancer diagnosis: A review analysis

Cervical cancer is a cell disease in the cervix that develops out of control in the female body. The cervix links the vagina (birth canal) with the upper section of the uterus, which can only be found in the female body. This is the second leading cause of death among women around the world. However, cervical cancer is currently one of the most preventable cancers if early detection is identified. The effect of unidentified cancer may increase the risk of death when the cell disease spreads to other parts of the female anatomy (metastasize). The Papanicolaou test is a cervical cancer screening technique used to identify potentially precancerous and cancerous cells in women's cervix. In this paper, a few popular detection method was applying and experimented on pap smear images. A few image quality assessment (IQA) was obtained in order to determine the best of detection method. The nucleus detection will help pathologists to diagnosis in early stages of cancer. The early detection is very important stage in order to reduce the cancer incidence and mortality. The method that needs to be invented in this study is the detection method. Image detection is the process of partitioning the image into multiple regions. The detection method is object detection and recognition as well as the boundary in images. The segmented Pap Smear image is one of the detection tools with many different methods that generated different results from different issues. The solution was by analysing different existing detection methods in order to compare the dissimilar performance of existing processes. The precision of the system performance needs to be improved in order to invent a new method. As predicted from the result, the innovative construction method must be proposed and compared in order to find accurate, comprehensive measures and proper sampling procedures by the features of the selection method.

Effect of Strength and Conditioning Trainings on Lower Limb Muscles Activity of High-Jumping Athletes

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of technology and sport science utilized within an athlete’s physical activity and exercise. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of two strength and conditioning exercises, namely, a customized free-weight exercise and plate-loaded machine exercise, on the lower limb muscle activities of the amateur high jumpers. Six amateur high jumpers were divided into two groups, a customized free-weight group and plate-loaded machine group (control group) and performed exercises as instructed by the coach. The EMG signal of the Rectus Femoris and Bicep Femoris muscles were recorded during the exercises. Metronome was used to control the speed of the exercise and it was standardized for all subjects. The harmstring’s cable pull exercise (customized free-weight) triggered Bicep Femoris more compared to the leg curl exercise (plate-loaded exercise). Similarly, in the case of Rectus Femoris muscle, the front squat exercise (customized free-weight exercise) triggered higher muscular activities compared to the leg extension exercise (plate-loaded exercise). In conclusion, the customized free-weight exercise has indicated higher muscle activities compared to the plate-loaded exercise.

Statistical analysis of postural stability during gait for adults between normal and simulated abnormal gaits

Walking is a common but complex daily activity for human. Walking is done when one leg is elevated and moved forward by flexing the hips and knee. Walking involves association of central nervous system, motor and sensory system. It has been previously shown that disrupted neural communication and musculoskeletal constraints may impair postural control and stability during gait and increase fall risk. Previous research have reported that distance between centre of pressure (COP) and centre of mass (COM) are suitable to study postural stability of patients that is affected by HSP disease. There is no research studied about normal and four types of simulated abnormal gaits which include hemiplegic, diplegic, bilaterally asymmetry and hunchback by analysing COP and COM. Fifteen male subjects and fifteen female subjects were involved in this research. Performances of subjects were captured with QTM system and analysed by Visual 3D software. For females, there was a significant difference in normal and hemiplegic gait in AP direction. For males, normal, hemiplegic and bilaterally asymmetry showed significant differences in AP direction while normal and diplegic demonstrated significant difference in ML direction. This finding concluded that COP-COM method can be suggested for clinical research and rehabilitation purpose.

Effect of Arm Swing Direction on Forward and Backward Jump Performance Based on Biomechanical Analysis

Previous studies have examined the role of arm swing for various types of jumping technique, but none have been found to study about the gender differences in term of the role of arm swing on forward and backward jump. This study aimed to compare the jumping performance between male and female for forward and backward jump. Seven male and seven female subjects performed four trials of forward and backward jump with (FJA, BJA) and without arm swing (FJ, BJ) respectively. Qualisys Track Manager System, EEGO Sports, Visual3D and MATLAB software was used to record and analyze the performance. According to the result, the triceps brachii muscle is the most active muscle compared to other muscles during jumping. The normalized vGRF showed significant correlation with jump height when jumping forward and backward (p<0.01). The arm swing enhanced the jumping performance by increasing the jump height. Males demonstrated greater vGRF and jump height than females. When jump with arm swing, the left knee flexion angle of males increased whereas females decreased. These findings concluded there is different between males and females during jumping.

Effect between cadence and lower extremity muscle activity during uphill cycling to cyclist performance

Cycling is an exercise performing in a vertically reciprocating movement using bicycle which usually serves as sport equipment for training and as transport. Great quantity of lower extremity muscle contraction involved in uphill cycling. In the past few decades, research related to cycling includes study of lower limb muscle activity by various situation applied. However, few research studies on the lower limb muscle activation level with varying cadence during uphill cycling. Thus, this task proposes to investigate the effect of pedalling cadence and tilting angle of cycling on lower extremity muscle activity, and to compare the muscle activation level between genders. Three pedalling cadences (70rpm, 80rpm and 90rpm) and two tilting angles of cycling inclination (10° and 30°) were set. Electromyography (EMG) measurements of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis in quadriceps were done and collected from 5 males and 5 females during cycling. ANOVA analysis was performed, and results indicated that pedaling cadence had significant influence on the lower extremity muscle activity (p < 0.05). Increasing pedaling cadence caused a significant increase in the muscle activation of the vastus lateralis. For gender effect, females tend to have a higher muscle activation level and significantly greater vastus lateralis muscle activity than males during cycling. On the other hand, no significant differences in peak muscle activity at both tilting angles of cycling and no significant interaction effect in all group comparison.

Gait Analysis with Kanri Distance Calculator following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is very prevalent in the field of orthopaedics, particularly in sports. Different parameters can be used to forecast an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACLR) patient's health condition. The aim of this research is to use Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) methodology to identify useful biomechanical variables from multivariate parameters through Kanri Distance Calculator (KDC). This study analyzed biomechanical variables based on the knee flexion and extension moment and peak vertical ground reaction force from kinetic parameters; phase swing / stance, step and step length and gait velocity from spatial temporal parameter; range of motion from kinetic parameters. This experiment engaged 15 healthy subjects and 10 ACL reconstructed patients. Then, by optimizing the KDC, the 9 attributes are reduced to 7, which are knee flexion and extension moment, speed, step length and stance / swing phase. Key attributes such as swing time and moment of knee flexion are identified as optimal variables of impact in the population. KDC extends our understanding to the correlation of characteristics and enables individual diagnosis to be performed. Then the suitable rehabilitation protocol can be objectively suggested for quicker recovery to specific subjects.

Statistical analysis in clinical gait analysis using Kinovea between normal and simulated abnormal gaits

Kinematic analysis of human gait is an effective strategy to detect and assess an individual's gait to diagnose and develop and guide follow-on rehabilitation protocols. So, an accurate, objective gait analysis system has potential to facilitate rehabilitation process. System using smartphone-Kinovea represent an emerging technology for physical activity assessment and that may be relevant for gait analysis. The objective of this study was to determine gait displacement, speed and joint angle by using smartphone-Kinovea software system - to compare the normal gait with four distinct simulated gait abnormalities. Also, to assess validity of the proposed system by compared with QTM as gold standard. 30 participants completed an experiment in which they completed several gait trails on single day. Gait types were analyzed using statistical analysis (two-way MANOVA). As for validation assessment was analyzed using paired t-test by comparing proposed system with QTM. Results shows that joint angles for abnormal gaits are higher mean (Standard Deviation) compared to normal gait during HS and TO. While, normal gait exhibits higher mean (Standard Deviation) for d and s during both IDS and TDS phases compared to other four abnormal gaits in both genders. Also, there are significant different (p<0.05) of gait for all gait comparisons for all parameters, except hip angle of normal-HP with p=0.495. Moreover, there is some gait was similar with other gait due to they shared underlying kinematic aspects such as BA and DP. The validation of the system gives moderate result. These support that the smartphone-Kinovea system have potential in detecting and identifying abnormal gaits, and for future implementation in diagnosis and rehabilitation.
