Export-Led Growth theory: Malaysian timber industry

Malaysia is one of the world’s largest exporters of tropical timber and timber products with export destinations to 160 countries. In 2008, the timber industry was the fifth largest contributor with contribution of 3.3 percent to total export earnings of Malaysia. Among commodities, timber industry shared about 20.3 percent of the export earnings. The major exports of primary products are saw logs, sawn timber, fibre board and plywood. Secondary processed wood products are furniture, builders’ joinery and carpentry together with mouldings. Given the contribution of Malaysian timber sector to Malaysian economy, this study sets to assess the experience of timber industry in Malaysia to provide support for export led growth (ELG) hypothesis. This study employs yearly data of real GDP and real export of timber products for the period 1979-2008 using Granger Causality approach. Cointegration test using Johansen approach evidenced the existence of long-run relationship between export and GDP of timber products. Furthermore, Granger causality proves that export led growth for Malaysian timber industry.

Pattem-Reconfigurable PCB-based Phased Array for WLAN Applications

A pattern-reconfigurable microstrip patch array antenna with switchable beams for WLAN application is presented. The proposed 1×2 array can steer the beam approximately to-30, 0, and +30 in the H(xz)-plane with the aid of DC biasing circuitry. An external switching circuit was also developed to measure the prototype effectively. The overall size of the proposed antenna prototype is 0.98?0 × 0.51?0 × 0.01?0 at 2.45 GHz, where the beam can be tilted by controlling the RF signal path through the developed microstrip feedline network using p-i-n diodes.

Reinvestigating the impact of gross domestic savings, exchange rates, and national debt on military expenditure in Malaysia

This study uses the ARDL method to explore how national debt relates to military expenditure, considering both short and long timeframes. In the short term, the research finds that changes in national debt don't strongly impact military expenditure right away. Interestingly, a stronger national currency is associated with lower short-term military expenditure. Additionally, higher domestic savings positively affect military expenditure in the short term, highlighting the role of local resources. In the long term, the study shows that all considered factors such as national debt, exchange rates, and domestic savings are positively contributed to military expenditure. This suggests that over time, increases in these factors are linked to higher military expenditure. Overall, the study highlights the complex connections between national debt, economic factors, and military expenditure, offering insights into both immediate and long-term influences on defense budget choices.

The impact of exchange rate on Malaysia wood export

Malaysia has been a major wood producer and exporter since 1970s. The Malaysian wood industry has grown from being a producer and exporter of logs to primary and higher value-added products such as sawntimber, plywood, veneer, and mouldings. The export contribution of wood also plays a significant development for the Malaysian export sector. For Malaysian wood export, being one of the sector that influenced by the exchange rate volatility, the study on the impact of exchange rate on export is considered important. This study uses Granger causality approach to analyze the relationship between exchange rate and wood export. Chow test is used to examine the structural change of exchange rate regime; pegged exchange rate regime and managed float exchange rate. The quarterly data of exchange rate and wood export from 1997-2008 were employed for this study. The result indicated that there is a structural break in the third quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of 2008 which real exchange rate is significant and positively correlated to timber export under managed floating exchange rate regime. Thus, understanding the relationship between exchange rate and timber export performance is important for Malaysia to further develop the direction of the industry.

Towards positive peace: Malaysia's strides in well-functioning government and sustainnable economic development

Well-functioning Government (WFG) describes how countries are directed, controlled, and held accountable. Hence, a country implementing well-functioning government principles and practices will lead to success and peace. The WFG is one of the pillars of positive peace introduced by the Institute for Peace and Economics (IEP). Therefore, this study will explore how WFG, as the pillar of positive peace, influenced the Malaysian economy. The main objective of this research is to explore the concept of WFG as a pillar of peace and its characteristics practised in the Malaysian economy. This study employed generic qualitative analysis and reviewed past research on good governance practices in Malaysia. The content analysis has been undertaken for this study. The attributes discussed, including political stability, sound economic policies, efficient governance and regulation, investment in human capital, and fiscal responsibility, collectively contribute to Malaysia's enduring economic resilience and growth trajectory. It fosters peace by cultivating social harmony, equity, and sustainable development. In addition, this approach contributes to Malaysia's overall well-being and advancement since it facilitates a peaceful and prosperous society.

Identifying Batik buying behaviour among generation Z in Malaysia towards the marketing strategy development for Batik entrepreneurs

Batik is considered historical traditional wear for Malaysian. The evolution of batik could be seen from the motives, colours and material. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between several variables of batik buying behaviour among the young adults in Malaysia towards the marketing strategy development. The study aimed to identify the factors that influence Generation Z's buying behaviour towards batik products by using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). In this study, convenience sampling has been used to identify the buying behaviour of university students aged 19-27 years old. The data gained from the surveys is analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicate that the combination of the independent variables such as subjective norms, consumer knowledge, perceived behavioural control and product characteristics, significantly predicts the marketing strategy development. The findings of the study are expected to assist the batik entrepreneurs from Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in determining the suitable marketing strategy in the context of batik industry with the Generation Z as their target market and the need for batik businesses to focus on product quality and affordability, as well as innovative marketing strategies to attract young consumers to the batik market.
