Effect of reaction temperature on zeolite synthesised from oil palm ash

The zeolite synthesis using silica extracted from oil palm ash (OPA) was carried out under hydrothermal conditions by activation with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The parameters involved in this study were reaction temperatures (40, 60, 80, and 100 °C), while the solid/liquid ratio, alkali concentration, and reaction time used were 0.2:1, 2 M, and 12 h, respectively. The properties of zeolites synthesised were characterised using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) values of the zeolite produced were also determined. Phase analysis by XRD shows that zeolite gismondine (CaAl2Si2O8·4(H2O)) was produced after hydrothermal activation of treated OPA.

Synthesis of Zeolite from rice husk ash

Rice husk ash (RHA) is used as the starting material for the synthesis of zeolites. In this study, alkaline hydrothermal treatment has been chosen for the zeolite conversion. Sodium hydroxide solution is used as the activation for the synthesis of zeolites. Two parameters affecting the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites were investigated, including sodium hydroxide concentration (1 and 2 M) and reaction temperature (60, 80, and 100 °C). The produced samples' chemical composition and crystalline phase were investigated using XRF and XRD. The result showed that the zeolite obtained from 2 M of NaOH solution under 80 °C of reaction temperature was gismondine.
