PublicationThe Influence of Grasping Technique and Arm Posture on Shooting Performance in Traditional Archery( 2021-01-01)
;Fitriyani N. ;Kasim M.F.Ghazali Z.Traditional archery is becoming popular and has attracted many people at different age level to acquire skills and finally participate in competitive games. It differs from modern recurve archery where it could not rely on equipment for accuracy and stability. It depends on the skilled developed by the archer and adaptability to the environment for competition. Technique of archery shooting was written in many books and may require investigation to confirm their effect on performance of an archer. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of arm posture and bow’s grasping techniques on the traditional archer’s shooting performance (higher score and minimal distance from bulls eye to the location where the arrow hits the target). Four experienced archers performed 5 m indoor shooting and their movement was recorded using motion capture system. The Square grasping technique resulted in more higher scores and minimal distance as compared to the other technique. Overall, the arm posture angle, Φ, did not influenced the shooting performance, except for the Oblique grasping technique. -
PublicationDifferences on kinematic, kinetic and muscle activities between MSD and health groups for different body movements: A literature review( 2023-02-21)
;Isa M.S.M.The aim of this study is to review the differences on kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity parameters between the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) group and the healthy group in everyday activities. This paper outlines the existing evidence on the differences of the kinematic, kinetic and muscle activities between participants with MSD and healthy participants during several activities. The search included Google-Scholar, Scopus, Elsevier-Science Direct and IEEE Explore, which next were separated into three categories: kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity parameters. Studies that compared movements between individuals with MSD and healthy participants were included. From the search results, we identified a total of 335 articles, 134 articles were selected. However, as this study focused only on participants with MSD, 113 articles were eliminated because those articles included participants who had injuries or diseases. Thus, the articles with non-MSD related were excluded which resulted with only 21 articles for final review. Based on the review, there were differences between MSD group and healthy group on kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity parameters. The MSD group had significantly greater hip and knee joint angles during walking and the average of all muscles in MSD group was higher than the healthy group. -
PublicationAssessments of cognitive state of Mitragyna speciosa (ketum) users during relaxation state( 2023-02-21)
;Fadhilah A.W. ;Rashid R.A. ;Palaniappan R. ;Mutusamy H.Helmy K.The abuse of Mitragyna speciosa or commonly known as ketum leaves is widespread across Asian countries. Ketum leaves that were originally used as medicine were abused for the purpose of deluding their minds. As it has intoxicated properties that similar to drugs, EEG signals of ketum users may differ from normal people as the ketum may alter the brain signal and the cognitive state of ketum users may decrease. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the cognitive state between ketum users and non-ketum users in terms of their relaxation state by using brain signal characteristics. A total of 8 subjects were involved in the experimental session. The 8 subjects were divided into two groups which are 4 subjects were ketum users for at least one year while the other 4 subjects were non-ketum users, had enough sleep for at least 6 hours and had no mental disorders. The EEG data was recorded during awaken relaxed state and was filtered using a notch filter and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to remove the powerline artefacts, eye blinking and eye movement. Stockwell Transform was used to reduce the amount of the large data and extract useful features from the signal. Student's t-test is performed in order to compute the percentages of the differences between the ketum users and non-ketum users in each brain lobe. Mean of Shannon Entropy, mean of Tsallis Entropy, and mean of Hurst Exponent features used were able to elucidate the differences in brain activities between the two groups investigated. -
PublicationAccelerometer-based physical fatigue assessment in 400 meter running event( 2021-05-03)
;Atiya S.O. ;Saidatul A.Hamzah S.Monitoring physical fatigue and capacity is important in high-performance environments to optimize the training stimulus and minimize unplanned physical fatigue. For that purpose, accelerometer sensors have emerged as a tool with the potential to measure and reflect changes in runner's acceleration. An accelerometer was used to measure the acceleration patterns which provided an analogue signal that could analyzed further by using different feature extractions. This research was aimed to estimate the location of physical fatigue occurrence in 400 m running. Basically, the experiments were conducted in outdoor track field, 6 subjects were involved, with age ranging between 19-24 years. In this study, two features have been used which are root mean square (RMS) and player load (PL) to indicate fatigue. The obtained results have shown that there were declines in the player load values in the last 150 m of running for most of the subjects which indicate occurrence of physical fatigue. On the other hand, some subjects have tried to save their energy in the 2nd and 3rd 100 m to speed up again in the last 100 m but there were obvious decrements in their player load in 400 m compared to the 1 100 m of running. -
PublicationEffect of muscle on cortical bone layer by finite element modeling( 2021-05-03)
;Jaapar N.F.N.Muscle is one of the important parts of the body as it made up from a bundle of fibrous tissue. The effects of fracture mechanisms of the bone are been studied related with the existing of muscle layer. In order to establish cortical bone with muscle layer, the structure of the base must be relevant and efficient. Therefore, finite element modeling method is an alternative way to study the effect of human fracture mechanisms with and without muscle layer. The aim of this study is to develop two dimensional (2D) model of human cortical bone and muscle layer in linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and elastic plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) by using ANSYS APDL applied on three-point bending test. Other than that, Stress Intensity Factor (K) and Strain Energy Release Rate (J-Integral) were analyzed on both 2D models which are cortical bone layer and cortical bone with muscle layer. Two methods were used to evaluate the values of K which are Displacement Extrapolation Method (DEM) and Constrained Integration (CINT) method. The experimental values then been compared with two theoretical expressions for validation purposes. By referring to the values of error for K and J-Integral values in both methods, it is proved that by using CINT method, the model produced smaller error and higher efficiency. By comparing the two models, cortical bone with muscle layer resulted lower K and J-Integral values. It can be concluded that layer of muscle on the cortical bone gives an impact on the crack tip that allow the growth of the crack. -
PublicationClinical validation of 3D mesh reconstruction system for spine curvature angle measurement( 2023-02-21)
;Shanyu C. ;Fook C.Y. ;Azizan A.F.Spine curvature disorders are scoliosis, lordosis, and kyphosis. These disorders are mainly caused by the bad habits of the person during sitting, standing, and lying. There are about 3 to 5 out of 1,000 people who are affected by spine curvature disorder. The current conventional method used for diagnose this disorder, such as radiography, goniometry and palpation. However, these conventional methods require human skills and can be time-consuming, resulting to exhaustion of logistic. Therefore, there is a need to solve this problem by creating a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to analyse the human body posture through the 3D reconstructed model of the person. Hence, 3D map meshing reconstruction of the human body method is proposed. This project divided into three parts, which are the development of the GUI for human posture analysis, clinical validation and posture analysis of the 3D model. The 3D model reconstructed from 3D mapping parameters shows 100% accuracy of the assessed point. The lowest difference of angle for the comparison between clinical method (goniometer) and the GUI for male is (A.Pe) 0.930±0.870 and 1.240±0.860 for female (P.Pe). This finding of 3D model assessment system can be helpful for medical doctor to diagnose patient who have spine problem. -

PublicationVariation of Stress Intensity Factor and Strain Energy Release Rate in Human Cortical Bone Using Finite Element Analysis( 2021-01-01)Finite element analysis is an alternative way to study human fracture behaviour as the technology is a leading innovation in biomechanics field. The aim of this study is to analyse the strain intensity factor and strain energyrelease rate when three-point bending test and tensile test were applied on a two-dimensional cortical bone model developed and tested using finite element software, Ansys. K values gained from Data Extrapolation Method (DEM) through Ansys for three-point bending test were compared with CINT method, Hiroshi Tada’s and Allan F. Bower’s theoretical expression while K values from DEM were only been compared with CINT method for tensile test. Meanwhile, J-integral values were obtained through CINT method using Ansys and analysed with different crack-to-width ratios and loads. As a result, stress intensity factor increased as crack-to-width ratio increased and strain energy release rate also increased as crack-to-width ratio and loads increased. It can be concluded that finite element analysis can be used to study the fracture behaviour of human cortical bone.

PublicationNon-invasive Detection of Ketum Users through Objective Analysis of EEG Signals( 2021-11-25)
;Nawayi S.H. ;Rashid R.A. ;Planiappan R. ;Lim C.C. ;Fook C.Y.Ketum leaves are traditionaly used for treatment of backpain and reduce fatigue. However, in recent years people use ketum leaves to substitute traditional drugs as they can easily be obtained at a low cost. Currently, a robust test for ketum detection is not available. Although ketum usage detection via test strip is available, however, the method is possible to be polluted by other substances and can be manipulated. Brain signals have unique characteristics and are well-known as a robust method for recognition and disease detection. Thus, this study has been done to distinguish between ketum users and non-users via brain signal characteristics. Eight participants were chosen, four of whom are heavy ketum users and four non-users with no health issues. Data were collected using the eegoSports device in relaxed state. In pre-processing, notch filter and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) were used to remove artifacts. Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) was used to reduce the large data dimension and extract features from the brain signal. To select the most significant features, T-Test was used. Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbour, and Ensemble classifier were used to categorize the input data into ketum users and non-users. Ensemble classifier was found to be able to predict the testing instances with 100% accuracy for open and closed eyes task with Teager energy and energy to standard deviation ratio as the features. -
PublicationThe Influence of Saracen Archery Grasping Techniques and Forearm Muscles Activation on Shooting Performance in Traditional Archery: A Pilot Study( 2021-11-25)
;Kamarudin N.F. ;Kasim M.F.Lim C.C.The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of four grasping techniques recommended by Saracen Archery and associated forearm muscles activation on traditional archer’s shooting performance. Each archer has shot 6 arrows in each grasping technique to the target, EMG activities of muscle Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (MFDS) and muscle Extensor Digitorum (MED) were collected in bow arm during aiming phase. The shooting performance was indicated by the distance from arrow hitting point on the target to the bull’s eye. The results revealed that each subject has specific grasping technique to obtain the best shooting performance. The grasping technique that generated the best performance is not as recommended by Saracen Archery. All subjects indicated that the best shooting performance was obtained when MED activated more than MFDS.
