Pemerkasaan al-Quran dan al-Sunnah penyumbang kepada kecemerlangan Tamadun Melayu: satu analisis

Nur kebenaran yang terpancar daripada isi kandungan al-Quran dan alSunnah mengandungi asas-asas keluhuran pembentukan peradaban sebagai panduan asas untuk diikuti oleh seluruh manusia. Al-Quran dan al-Sunnah menyeru semua masyarakat supaya kembali kepada pemikiran rasional dan realistik dan menyangkal pemikiran yang diikat dengan fahaman animisme, paganisme dan “syncretism”. Sebagai kitab yang paling sempurna diciptakan oleh Allah, maka al-Quran merupakan obor kebenaran yang menerangi liku-liku kehidupan yang perlu dilalui oleh setiap manusia. Begitu juga al-Sunnah yang disampaikan oleh Nabi Muhammad SAW melalui petunjuk Ilahi menjadi petunjuk kepada manusia untuk menguruskan sistem kehidupan. Sejarah telah mencerahkan bahawa pengajaran yang terkandung dalam al-Quran dan al-Sunnah telah memberi impak yang positif terhadap kebudayaan Melayu. Ajaran Islam yang telah berstimulasi dalam kebudayaan Melayu telah menimbulkan satu gelombang yang hebat dalam menggerakkan proses merevolusi sistem pandangan hidup masyarakat yang telah memalingkan dari alam seni mitos yang khayal kepada pembentukan alam akal dan budi yang menuntut kepada kaedah tertib yang teratur. Islam telah mengubah lanskap kebudayaan Melayu kepada kepercayaan rasionalisme dan pengetahuan akliah. Manifestasi ini dizahirkan melalui sistem masyarakat yang berasaskan kepada kebebasan, keadilan dan kemuliaan keperibadian insan. Justeru itu, penelitian yang lebih kritis dan saintifik terhadap impak pengajaran al-Quran dan al-Sunnah terhadap perkaitannya dalam memperkasakan bangsa Melayu perlu dilakukan. Kajian yang dijalankan ini adalah bersifat kualitatif dengan mengkaji persejarahan Islam bagi mendapatkan gambaran yang lebih tepat tentang aspek budaya dan pemikiran serta realiti hidup masyarakat Melayu kini. Natijahnya, ajaranal-Quran dan al-Sunnah telah berjaya mewarnai sistem kepercayaan, falsafah, bahasa, sejarah dan kesenian masyarakat Melayu. Sifat dan hakikat kecemerlangan kebudayaan Melayu tidak dapat dijuzukkan daripada pengajaran Islam. Apa yang nyata, umat Melayu akan terus unggul dan berdaya saing sekiranya berpegang teguh dengan pegangan al-Quran dan al-Sunnah.

Perception of teacher on cooperative learning

The participation of students in the process of learning is one of the keys to ensure effective learning outcomes either in terms of knowledge or skill. However, teacher-centred teaching methods which have been practiced in this country after so long avert students to fully engage in the learning process especially in a classroom. Various attempts have been made by the government to emphasize student’s development in term of communication, creativity and innovation through the of process learning in class. It requires school to implement student-centred teaching methods such as cooperative learning. Cooperative learning is a teaching method that requires teachers not only interacts with the students but also with other teaching aids such as audio, video and computer. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify teachers' perception on the implementation of cooperative learning in the teaching and learning process in class. 25 teachers were selected as respondents. Mixed methods were used in this study, where the instrument of questionnaires and interviews were used to collect the data. Quantitative data analysis was made using descriptive statistics of frequency, mean and percentage. While, qualitative data analysis was based on the recommendations of the Miles & Huberman (1994). The findings showed teachers have a positive attitude toward cooperative learning and they are ready and feel confident to practice it. Screening drug, alcohol and substance abuse the Psychometric measures

Urinalysis was used in previous studies among higher institution students (n=16252) in Malaysia to answer the question of whether university students are involved in drug abuse. However, the use of urinalysis had faced some problems. The problems were related to human rights issues and the cost to perform the urinalysis was expensive and quite impossible to be implemented to a large population of university students. To overcome this problem, this study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of psychometric measures in screening drug, alcohol and substance abuse. The Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory A2 (SASSI-A2) was used for this purpose. SASSI-A2 is a brief screening tool designed to identify individuals who have a high probability of having a substance use disorder, including both substance abuse and substance dependence. SASSI-A2 comprises of 72 items that are rated on a two point scale with response; true and false. SASSI-A2 was translated into Malay language and it was refined through a back-translation technique and focus group approach. Psychometric testing was undertaken on a sample of 750 university students from five public universities in Malaysia. All participants were aged between 19 and 20 years. Internal consistency coefficients were calculated for the total scale and its subscales. Chronbach's alpha obtained for SASSI-A2 was 0.72. This relatively high level of Chronbach's alpha showed relatively high level of reliability. The results demonstrated that the whole SASSI-A2 meets the fundamental measurement properties and can discriminate groups of higher institution students from high to low on the substance dependency variable. The accuracy of the test has been found to be unaffected by gender, ethnicity, age and years of education. Although more rigorous validation studies are needed, it is recommended that SASSI-A2 be considered for usage to higher institution students populations when a brief, objective, and accurate screening tool for chemical dependency is needed.

Friendship maintenance behaviour based on working position and marital status among working women in Malaysia

Nowadays, friend play an important role in women’s life especially with the consideration that more women are working and not only rely on family for social supports. This research examined impact of working position and marital status on friendship maintenance behavior among working women in Malaysia, particularly on how women maintained their friendship based on the position of working and marital status. This study conducted using a survey involving 500 women who work at public university in Malaysia. Data was collected using the Friendship Maintenance Scale. The data collection procedure involved three steps, beginning with preparation of the instrument, then obtaining approval from related organizations, followed by online data collection via email. The collected data were analysed using SPSS 23 and the data were interpreted using descriptive analyses. The findings of the study found that women have different behavior on how they maintained their friendship based on position of working and marital status. The findings of this study contributed to the developments of literatures regarding women’s friendship especially for better understanding regarding the nature of friendship among working women in Malaysia. A better understanding of the nature could provide a suitable social support for maintaining working women relationships as well as their psychological well-being.

Psychometric properties of the 42-item version of Ryff’s Psychological Well-being scale among working women in Malaysia

The purpose of this study was to explore factor structure of Ryff’s Psychological Well-being Scale. The scale was administered to 500 women employees from Malaysia’s public universities. The 42-items of Psychological Well-being scale with six subscales namely: Selfacceptance, Environmental mastery, Positive relations with others, Autonomy, Personal growth, and Purpose in life. Results from principal factor analysis with Promax rotation with scree plot extracted 4 factors which contributed 53.70 per cent cumulative variance and produced loading between 0.346 to 0.924. However, the 4-factor produced in the analysis did not stand in any factors proposed by Ryff’s, thus it yield new unidentified 4 factors. Further analysis was recommended to confirm the psychometric properties from the study.

The role of sense of purpose, time management, attendance, sleep and self-esteem in academic performance among university students in Malaysia

This research delves into the dynamics influencing the academic performance of undergraduate students in Malaysian universities, specifically examining the role of self-esteem, sense of purpose, time management, sleep quality, and class attendance. With a calculated sample size of 384 obtained from purposive sampling, the study reveals compelling insights. This study aims to determine how students perform in university and what factors contribute the most to their academic performance. The findings underscore the significant influence of self-esteem, sense of purpose, and class attendance on academic performance. These results illuminate the relationship between psychological and behavioral factors in shaping students' success in the academic sphere. Understanding how these variables relate to academic outcomes provides educators and institutions with valuable information for tailoring support mechanisms and interventions to enhance students' overall educational experience. In the unique context of Malaysian universities, this research contributes to the broader discourse on factors that contribute to or hinder academic performance among undergraduate students.

The relationship between higher education and job opportunities in Malaysia

This paper aims to examine the relationship between higher education and job opportunities in Malaysia. Annual data on higher education and unemployment rate from 1982 to 2012 were collected. The Johansen co-integration method was conducted and the results show that there is a long-run relationship between higher education and unemployment rate. However, the relationship between the variables does not exist in the shortrun.
