Analysis of flexible antenna performance on partial discharges detection

This paper reports a short finding on the use of a flexible substrate in the design of Partial discharge (PD) detection antenna. This flexible antenna was designed and simulated using CST Microwave Studio to detect corona discharge which is one types of PD that occur in power transformers. The flexible substrate that been used in designing the antenna is paper that has permittivity of 3.2 and the chosen frequency is between 300MHz until 3GHz. The overall dimension is 208×168×1.6 mm3. The simulations of the antenna’s return loss were conducted under two conditions; 1) flat and 2) bending along H- planes. The result were been analysed to understand the performance of paper properties, so that practical system requirements are met. This implies that the performance of paper antennas can be used in the PD field with altering some of the characteristic to upgrade its performance.

Optimal coordinated design of multiple damping controllers ased on PSS and UPFC device to improve dynamic stability in the power system

Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) device is applied to control power flow in transmission lines. Supplementary damping controller can be installed on any control channel of the UPFC inputs to implement the task of Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller. In this paper, we have presented the simultaneous coordinated design of the multiple damping controllers between Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and UPFC-based POD or between different multiple UPFC-based POD controllers without PSS in a single-machine infinite-bus power system in order to identify the design that provided the most effective damping performance. The parameters of the damping controllers are optimized utilizing a Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (CPSO) algorithm based on eigenvalue objective function. The simulation results show that the coordinated design of the multiple damping controllers has high ability in damping oscillations compared to the individual damping controllers. Furthermore, the coordinated design of UPFC-based POD controllers demonstrates the superiority over the coordinated design of PSS and UPFC-based POD controllers for enhancing greatly the stability of the power system.

Comparative study of vibration energy harvesting on home appliances using piezoelectric energy harvester

This project was developed to harvest vibration energy using a piezoelectric energy harvester. The availability of home appliance vibration energy is a promising solution to get clean energy resources to manipulate wasted energy. When the appliances’ vibration hits the piezoelectric energy harvester surface, pressure is applied to the piezoelectric transducers and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The piezoelectric energy harvester’s efficiency depends on the availability of the home appliances’ vibration energy; thus, using multiple piezoelectric transducers in series generates more power. The piezoelectric’ alternating current (AC) output is fed to a Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier (CWVM) to convert into direct current (DC) and boost the output. Four piezoelectric transducers connected in series have successfully produced a voltage of up to 4.7 V. Its output voltage can be harnessed to power low-voltage electronic devices.

Arcing fault diagnosis using enhanced cross-correlation technique

This study explored the potential use of cross-correlation as a technique for detecting arcing faults in a power system distribution network. The cross-correlation technique was employed to investigate the effect of each antenna placement as a detection device, time difference of arrival (TDOA), time delay, and correlation magnitude of arcing signals detected during on-line arcing fault measurement. The arcing fault was detected using four antennas that had been set up around the arc source point in a high voltage (HV) laboratory. The measurements were taken using a digital oscilloscope. For precise results, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) denoising technique combined with cross-correlation (CC) technique were applied using MATLAB software to identify the arcing signals detected in order to diagnose the differentiation between noisy and real arcing fault signals. Further assessment was carried out by performing a cross-correlation technique on the real arcing signals obtained to find the similarities and arrival time's delay between single arcing signals' placement. The outcome shows that all measurements including the time difference of arrival (TDOA), correlation magnitude, time delay, and antennas' placement towards the arcing source point are valuable in determining the arcing signals detected precisely.

Arcing fault diagnosis using first peak arrival of EM radiation signal

The objective of this study was to diagnose the arcing fault signals based on the first peak of arrival method using antenna to assess its use as potential arcing fault detection in power system network. Square patch antenna and circle patch antenna were employed for detection on artificial arcing in real environment. First peak of arcing signal arrival was measured through an analysis over a range of time and amplitude signals detected. For accurate results, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) denoising technique was applied to the arcing signals detected as denoising tools. Analysis of first peak of signal arrival time and amplitude were carried out using MATLAB software to measure the changes in signals detected caused by di different placements of antenna. The results revealed that the first peak of signal arrival time, amplitude, type of antenna used and placement of the antenna around arcing source point all reflect the signals measurement.
