PublicationEffect of bond thickness on interfacial fracture toughness of T-joint in fluidization bed( 2018)Nor Bakyah AbuFluidization bed is a main component of the urea granulator system which consists of T-joint type. The development of T-joint is a combination of the perforated (bottom) and the base plate (top). Urea plant will slow down or immediately shut down because of spot welding failure, which causes a large loss to the company. Thus, adhesive joint was predicted as a better solution for the spot welding failure problem. The objectives of this research were to identify the potential crack initiation site at adhesive T-joint, predict the failure load of adhesive T-joints having various thickness with interface pre-crack under Mode I loading experiments and evaluate the bond thickness-dependent interfacial fracture toughness of adhesive T-joints. Firstly, 3D model of adhesive T-joint without crack was used to find a potential crack initiation site at the joint. Then, adhesive T-joint with crack was analysed and experiments were conducted for validation of failure load. Besides, 2D model was used to calibrate interfacial fracture toughness, Jc for CT models and adhesive T-joints with different thickness. After finished FEA of adhesive without crack, the crack was introduced at the top interface of the adhesive. FEA results of adhesive with and without crack show the same pattern of results with the experimental method. From FEA calculation, Jc value of the adhesive CT and the CT model of adhesive with stainless steel are 14.977 N/mm and 8.224 N/mm, respectively. It is also found that the different thickness of adhesive gave different values of Jc with range between 2.983 N/mm to 5.246 N/mm. As a conclusion, adhesive T-joint with 1.5 mm is the best thickness to be used for urea granulator fluidization bed application because it has considerable high failure load and value of Jc which is 794 N and 3.868 N/mm, respectively.
