Abstract
Mg/HAP composites were produced by blending magnesium (Mg) powder with 5, 10 and 15 wt. % of hydroxyapatite (HAP) using powder metallurgy technique. In this work, metal matrix composition of Mg/HAP was targeted for biodegradable implant application. The as-prepared Mg/HAP composites were examined by mechanical test and elemental composition analysis. Archimedes principle was performed to determine the density of the composites. It is shown that the Mg/HAP composite with 5 wt. % of HAP indicated as the highest density. The compressive strength of Mg - 15HAP composite are significantly higher than those counterparts in agreement with the theoretical compressive strength of HAP. The elemental composition analysis of Mg/HAP composites evaluated by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). It is demonstrated that the mechanical properties and elemental composition analysis can be properly controlled by adjusting HAP content.
